Immediately Gone:
Wesley Matthews (2009, undrafted)
DeAndre Jordan (2008, 35th)
Dennis Smith Jr (2017, 9th)
Ray Spalding (2018, 56th)
Coming to Dallas:
Courtney Lee (2008, 22nd)
Trey Burke (2013, 9th)
Tim Hardaway Jr. (2013, 24th)
Kristaps Porziņģis (2015, 4th)
I'd like to think that we got younger with this trade. We got rid of 2 players 30+ and got 1 in return. The average age of the 4 players we retained is 27.5. The players who are no longer with the Mavericks have an average age of 26.49. However, let's be real. Ray Spalding didn't get to play. His age shouldn't be included. Also it's unlikely that Courtney Lee gets to do much.
Now that means we gave up 3 players with an average age of 28.02 for 3 players with an average age of 25.55 in the immediate future. I don't want to fret on the draft picks.

@wojespn: Dallas created a $12.9M trade exception as part of the deal with New York, league source tells ESPN.

@ZachLowe_NBA Pick details via league memo: NYK receives next avail DAL 1st-rounder unprotected. Depending on when that happens, NYK then receives either DAL 2023, 2024, or 2025 1st-round pick-- top-10 protected in all three years. If they haven't received 1st by 2025, they get Mavs 2025 2nd.

What is the deal with the $12.9 million trade exception? How long before we have to use it by?

I believe it expires before the start of next season. I'm not sure though.

I should add that tpe's count as cap as well I believe. So if we had 30m in space we would have 12m less unless we renounced the tpe.

They should be ecstatic that the commander himself is coming aboard to drive home that tank.

Postgame interview: Luka hopes he & KP will play in Dallas for years, has talked to him since the trade. Seems to be pretty excited about this trade.

Well....even the Knicks are not that stupid, pretty sure they have allready through backchannels the confirmation which two players are going to team up in NY (Durant etc).
Smells all like the Heat in 2010, when Wade told Riley months ago to clear the cap because his buddies would come over

If reports are true that KD and Kyrie have interest in being together and they end up in NY. Then I guess a year from now DSJ's camp is leaking he's unhappy again.

So many are upset by the draft picks... probably because this is football country. A late first round pick is about the equivalent of a 4th rounder in the NFL draft

I don’t doubt that’s true. This trade at least shows that they are confident that this scenario is possible.

One is unprotected the other is top 10. It’s not about the picks per se but that we might not have a draft pick for a long time. If KP doesn’t pan out we fucked.

Probably so.. if he doesn’t pan out, then there’s a decent chance that Doncic leaves as well. So more than worth the risk

Yeah, it would be dumb for Porz to take the QO. I get that he can possibly get more later, but he should call NN with how that might turn out.

I don't think those are correct.
If he signs the QO, he stops being any kind of free agent (he'll be signed to a contract).
#2 is not an option for him, otherwise everyone would do it.
And his chance to sign an extension is passed.
He will be a RFA when his contract ends this summer, unless Dallas decides not to make the QO.
Then he can sign a contract with someone (which Dallas could match) or he can sign the QO and become a UFA the following year.
I would think signing him to a long term contract would be the preferred option - otherwise you risk losing him next year.

Yeah but you might never have the chance at two stars. Problem with the Bucks is they have have him and no second star.
But yeah, Donnie has done his job among the FO three for sure. I don't think even some Mavs fans realize how good Kristaps really is.

After the initial hype it really matters to me what went down behind the scenes. For now it looks like the Knicks want to make everyone believe that KP wanted a trade and that in fact they felt like moving him would be beneficial. But if it's indeed a diva move by Kristaps, I'll have a harder time rooting for him. Just don't like the attitude...

@espn_macmahon: The Mavericks are uncertain about when Kristaps Porzingis will be ready to play for them. Frankly, they’re unconcerned. This trade for Dallas is about the next decade plus, not right now.

And on a side note, both Porzingis and Doncic speak spanish, so there will be some interesting 2 man game communication and play call possibilities. Not to mention JJ Barea.

One of my many trade scenarios invovled the inclusion of Willie Hernangomez in a trade with Charlotte, because he and Porzingis were good friends during their time on the Knicks, and their speaking Spanish together reportedly irritated Knicks functionaries who couldn't understand what they were saying. When Hernangomez asked for more playing time, the Knicks deported him to Charlotte.
Knicks apparently did very little to make Porzingis feel comfortable, and more than a little to alienate him.
