So what happens if Jones decides to retire instead of report to the Pacers?

I think even if Jones retires, he's their problem now. Once the contract is dealt I think they need to deal with whatever happens from here.

Well, if he never reports at all I believe the Pacers could back out of the deal. But if he retires, I imagine that will end up saving the Pacers some cash, so I bet they'd be fine with that.

They don't have to bother with the paperwork to waive him, just put him on the retired list and pay him his money (straight from Cubans pocket).

I wouldn't call Carlisle a small move...but I totally agree. I'm so much more excited about this season...

Interesting move being made by the Pacers. When they made the trade, it was with the understanding that EJones was done, and on that basis the Mavs sent money to buy him out.
But Larry Bird is playing "save a nickel" here. He knows Jones doesn't want to play, so he's acting like they expect him to show up, travel, and play for 82 games in order to get paid - obviously hoping to persuade Jones to accept a buyout for less than the full amount.
Jones isn't without options, of course. He can just say, "Wow, I expect a big role in Indy, thanks guys, here I come" and force the Pacers (who lack roster space for him) to cut someone if they want to play that game.
It's an intriguing game of chicken being played. Wonder who will blink?

Out with Jones-Juwan, in with Green, Williams.
Wright will get a larger role. Stack and George will fill in the holes that Wright, Green and Williams can't.....which looks to be a lot less than last year.

Jones didn't retire for us. I'm not sure if the Mavs wanted him to, considering it would have taken away a potential trade asset, but regardless he didn't.
I'd expect him to showup and go after his full buyout.

If the blink is an injury, don't expect a long wait.
I'm sure he'll go and try and give it one more shot. It's not like he's going to get a ton of minutes or anything, either way. The end result will lead to him getting all his money that he is owed.

If I'm ejones, I come down with a permanent hammy. Bird can play the game, but ejones has the cards imo.

The trade for Williams is a great move. Anytime you can get something for nothing, without giving up a player in your regular rotation you have to do it. Unless you're getting Zach Randolph or Eddy Curry in return. Maybe S.Williams can turn into a taller version of J.R. Smith for us?!

...younger legs, when Avery was here, given the age of JHo, and Devin, it made sense to fill the gaps with veterans. Now with that group of veterans aging and not able to play more than 15 a night...... on healthy nights, you need fresher legs to fill the gaps around the older legs. In addition to the constant running, we'll need fresh legs through out the game. Would love to see Wright and Green man the 2 guard spots and eventually Williams backing up Howard. Between Kidd and Dirk.....there is enough experience to cover for Wright, Green and William's lack of it. They just need to do what they do best and it's out athletic the opponents.

As I mentioned earlier, this EJones vs LBird thing was about the Pacers trying to play hardball on the money, and nothing more.
Here's the final chapter, from nba.com
Eddie Jones will not join the Pacers but the franchise will recoup the ability to sign another player as a result of an agreement reached today.
Jones was acquired by the Pacers from Dallas, along with two second-round picks and cash, in exchange for Shawne Williams on Oct. 10. The 36-year-old veteran guard made it clear he preferred not to play this season.
The Pacers worked with agent Leon Rose and reached an agreement that lowers the salary-cap figure for the one season remaining on Jones' contract, thus clearing enough room for the team to sign another player to a veteran minimum contract without exceeding the NBA Luxury Tax threshold.
"Eddie has had a terrific career and has been a great professional and we appreciate him working with us on this agreement," said Pacers President of Basketball Operations Larry Bird. "This will allow us to go out and sign another player if we want to."

What an inglorious ending to an above average career. It's like dying behind a dumpster in a back alley and your body not being found until a week later because of the foul stench coming from your rotten entrails.

That's what happens when a player sticks around too long. Injuries start to mount. I remember Kidd saying, once you lose your legs, that's it. For a guy like Jones, once that was gone, it was over. For his position, his legs are a must. You can say veteran saavy, but he totally depended on his athletic ability.
