Really? Because I seem to recall that the men "cut out to be in war" were all portrayed as over the top aggressive type-a dickheads. Ever met a real soldier who's been in a war who acted like that? "I can't wait to get back over there, because I can't handle having a wife and kids." The idea that the U.S. soldier somehow gets off on being in harms way is a real disservice to anyone who ever served. Like I said the movie started off well, but by the end the flaws of having someone who already has their mind made up about the military, tell a story about the military, shined through. The movie was about EIDs but shifted into a cometary about the mental make up of the U.S. soldier, something Hollywood needs to leave alone. When did we start accepting that Hollywood knows more about the troops than the people who live with and are close to real-life soldiers?
Also.... Why when ever anyone disagrees with me on this board, the fall back argument always includes some dig at me over the fact I spent 6 years chasing a dream? Gagree. And it's not like the other soldiers in the movie were bad soldiers, or made out to be pansies who hated what they were doing. Sanborn was a hell of a soldier who, to my recollection, never complained about the reasons behind him being there. He simply was ready to be home.

oh, and i finally watched "Up" this past weekend. VERY, VERY good.
A couple days prior, i watched "Marley & Me". It's emotional at the end because of the dog, but man, what HORRIBLE acting. There was more emotion in the first 5 minutes of the old guy that didn't talk in "Up" than there was in the entire movie with Aniston and Wilson.

Cause it's the internet. For as much support as you may get (kudos from me for chasing your dream), you'll get 30X as much ridicule (me saying your posts aren't funny ) when you reveal anything personal.

So your saying the movie portrayed Sanborn as someone who's not cut out to be in war? I thought it portrayed all different mindsets of soldiers, especially in the three main characters. You had James, the borderline nut job who was cool under pressure but also put people in harm's way. You have Sanborn, the rock of the group who was pretty ready to be home by the time it was all said and done, but was a damn good solder. And you had Eldridge who is probably a good representation of a lot of soldiers, relatively willing, really doesn't want to die, and perhaps not as decisive as he should be under fire.
I thought the movie pretty clearly portrayed Sanborn as the ideal, and portrayed James as flawed. And it clearly commented on the idea that while James is a jerk and not very socially adapted, you have to have a certain amount of those people. Stuff doesn't get done without those people a lot of the time, in all walks of life.

Best pic: Moon, Star Trek, ZombieLand, The Road, Anvil "the story of Anvil", Food Inc.
Best Actor: Vigo or Pitt
Best Actress: Just give the damned thing to Sandra, only about two actresses a year actually get speaking parts anyway.
Supporting Actor: Give it to the oldest nominee without an Oscar.
Supporting Actress: See Best Actress.

I'll accept that.
However, I doubt you are all that Big or Larouxesque. I know you're a Boy as there are no women on the Internet.
Also I will give Hurt Locker another spin and see what I think. It took more than one viewing of NCFOM to make my mind up on that one.
Other than Hurt Locker it seems no one has any other objections to my thoughts on this years batch of crap.
p.s. J.J. Barea sucks.

Haven't seen Moon or The Road, but would have loved to see "Star Trek" in there. That was a great movie.
Zombieland is probably too quirky for the Oscar committee, and Anvil and Food Inc. are both documentaries. When's the last time a documentary was nominated for best picture?

I am Big, it's true. Laroux is just gibberish and also a name of a Louisiana band (although spelled Leroux).
Now, the only other one i have an issue with is "Up in the Air". I really, really liked it. Was it George Clooney playing himself? yes, but it worked. I didn't find it boring at all.

I thought Up in the Air was pretty good.
And I thoroughly enjoyed Avatar. Stories don't have to be original to be entertaining.

As much as one would think, no. That was "I am Sam".
I do agree with Thig about Avatar. Whether the plot was original is actually neither here nor there. It is a movie EVENT.

And frankly the movies they have picked to shower with adoration were mostly overhyped crap.
Up in the Air.....Boring. Very Very Boring, I get it. America is downsizing, thanks for letting me know George, how is the $15 million a movie treating you.
Precious....Poverty Porn. She's so poor and her parents suck. Black People in the projects are uneducated??? I would have never known if it weren't for this movie. Thank you again Hollywood for letting me know about social issues 5 decades late.
Avatar...Pochahontas and Ferngully had a baby and wrapped it in CGI. And for all the money it has made It still hasn't broke even.
The Hurt Locker. Started well, but by the end was just another phony Hollywood attempt to let me know how to feel about the war. Oh and Soldiers are bad, bad people. Can they just once make a movie about Iraq that doesn't paint every other troop as a war loving asshole?
And lets just roll out the same batch of liberal douchebags to nominate for actor and actress this year just like last year. I love how an actor can't get the nomination if his politics are wrong. Or how all an actor has to do to get nominated is select the most slanted role available. "In this movie I play a poor, mentally retarded, gay soldier, who's against the war, but no one will let me pursue my dream of teaching inner city children about abortion because I'm a woman"..."Where's my Oscar?"
How the Oscar's still get treated like some golden hight and not just like the fluff it is, I will never know? It's the Grammy's without the auto-tune.
|
Great takes on the Oscar's and the movies you listed. Major Rec for this post!!!
Of course now that you get some kudos from me...the haters will be out in droves...my apologies to you...but again nice job, good right up and I have to admit I fell out laughing with your comments about Avatar!!! Funny Stuff!!!

In that case why didn't Star War win best Everything.
Maybe there needs to be a new category, Best unoriginal thing with neato special effects. That's too wordy.... How about Best Event Movie?

Well, that's really the reason they opened Best picture up to 10 films this year. So that money-making movies that people have actually seen can get nominated.
Also, Star Wars was indeed nominated (didn't win thanks to the Oscars' hard-on for Woody Allen). I wasn't saying Avatar should win, but it deserves to be nominated.

I think that is my biggest issue with Hollywood and the Oscars. Once they get a hard on for someone forget it if you are nominated the same year they are nominated.
To think both Cher and Emenim had Oscars before Scorsese. I mean for god's sake Triple Six Mafia have an Oscar, but neither Pitt nor DiCaprio do?

And they in turn can use "Oscar Nominated" in their marketing of their DVD's and whatnot. It's all about money. Which is fine.
I think it's nice that movies that people went to see get nominated. It seems so much more....democratic. What was the best movie of the year? We could ask this small group of people, or we could, you know, see what EVERYONE liked the best...
Then there's the other side of the coin: Look at NBA All-Star voting. People as a group are stupid.

So should remakes and stories based heavily on books also not be eligible? They are also not original.

Still upset about the Avatar thing? Ok, let's say it doesn't matter if a movie is original, lets say it doesn't matter how bad the acting is, or how corny the dialog. Lets just go with your qualifier of Entertaining. After an hour and a half I was looking for the exit, (in 3-D no less). I wasn't entertained. I didn't like the special effects and, as that is all that matters in this case, the movie failed for me. I thought the special effects weren't cool or worth the 15 bucks. I thought they were gaaaaaayyyy. I didn't like Avatar. And I don't get why Avatar fanboys, (not saying you are one) get so damn defensive about their movie. If I don't like a movie, I don't like it. If I don't like it because I'm not getting the story I will let someone try to talk me into a different opinion, or at least watching it again. I got the story in Avatar, I didn't like the story and the special effects didn't make up for it.
I don't want to have to just look at the special effects and ignore everything else to enjoy a movie. Thats like saying, don't read this book just look at the pretty illustrations.

I'm not upset about it, I just hear your original statement about it a lot and it doesn't make much sense to me.
I have no issue with you not liking it, and am perfectly happy to accept someone's subjective view on a movie (except Shawshank...you don't like Shawshank, we fight to the death). Just wanted to pick your brain on your concept of originality.

I didn't like Avatar but I don't care if movies are "original" or not. I just thought it was cheesy as hell. If it doesn't win just about every technical award, though, it'd be a real surprise.

My problem with Avatar is that it thinks it's deeper than it really is. If it was some mindless 300 mil dollar action flick like Transformers, then I might not care as much. But a sickeningly low concept pro environment movie featuring ugly nosed blue aliens doesn't really interest me. If you make a box of crap look great in 3D, then I could care less because it is still a box of crap.

From my side, I can't comment on the movies...I haven't seen them. But I thought your takes were pretty amusing.
Yes, I liked your spin regarding Liberal thought within a movie...but I'm used to that, and by now most if not everyone from this board would know my view...so I felt it best to keep it to myself. Yes, I'm practicing some semblance of restraint and trying to be a bit better at taking the high-road on this board.
No sense in beating a dead horse.
Best wishes in your college studies!!! Both of my guys have finished their first semester of Freshman College and are now into Semester 2, while my wife is taking advantage of the newly found free time, to return to school and work on her degree. Oh what fun, to be single income with 3 in college!!!
For what it's worth, we are actually have a good time at this stage of life!!!
Hope the rest of you and enjoying your own journey!!!
Keep up the movie talk...I've got a few I just put into my DVD player.
I'll make a new post with those movies...hopefully these turn out to be okay.

Okay, so here's some movies in my DVD player...so far I've watched two of them.
*Public Enemies - cool movie...really enjoyed this one.
*District 9 - at first I didn't care for it...skipped through some of it, but watched the last 40 minutes and actually wound up enjoying it.
Still to see:
*The Code (Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas)
*Hannibal Rising - looks interesting...might watch it later today
*The Stone Merchant (Harvey Keitel
*Kill Shot (Diane Lane & Mickey Rourke)
And I've got a copy of Animal House sitting by the DVD player...thinking about re-watching that for the who knows how many times...something about having the Wife and both sons in college that brings out the best of Animal House!!!

So I just watched "Hanibal Rising"
Pretty cool movie...was worth watching.
I enjoyed the building of the character...the indepth background.
I found this very entertaining. But then again, I enjoy the "Why" behind characters...
In this case Hanibal is not just a monster, but something happened to make him what he is.
I'll have to watch it again to see where it ranks...but first impression was very positive.

I think it would be more advantageous to utilize the tag feature on specific posts...my first tag would be "I wanna wretch"

Avatar is a horribly mediocre movie. It's an absolute SHAM that it has gotten so many awards and nominations. Absolutely laughable. IMO, the Oscar nods for "Best Film" should have been, in no order:
Hurt Locker
Up
Up in the Air
Moon (I know it came out early, but a travesty, absolute travesty is has not gotten any noms).
Basterds
A Simple Man
Crazy Heart
Precious
An Education
Fantastic Mr. Fox

Holy cow, I haven't seen a single one of these. The only one that I've actually heard of without doing a search to be reminded is "Up in the Air"
Usually, they have movies I've heard of...maybe it's too much time on D-M boards...I've lost touch with movies or something.

Metropolis
Today is the world premiere of the renovated version of Fritz Lang´s famous science ficition movie METROPOLIS ( 1927 ).
2008 an original but partly damaged copy of the film was located at the Museo del Cine in Argentina, so the guys could restore the original version of 147 minutes length.
It will be rolling today at the 60th Berlinale and simultanously at the Alte Oper Frankfurt.
So, you might think this GD´s post is not that exciting for citizens of the United States ? Not at all. The film will also be shown on broadcaster "arte" and users of
can record it ( arte - Start is 2040 ).
I´m using this service since a few years and it works very well. It´s free and easy to handle, so you can give it a shot.
The main US stations are available, too.
I will record it and it will stay in my box for about two weeks. So, if you are a science fiction fan, not able to register in time or something else and if you don´t want to miss it, you can pm me and request the download.

I do agree with Thig about Avatar. Whether the plot was original is actually neither here nor there. It is a movie EVENT.

I Am Sam was highly overrated.

I agree. I was being sarcastic. That movie exists just so people can fawn over Penn for obvious Oscar pandering.

percy jackson and the olympians the lightning thief. Really enjoyable movie. If you watch the kid books movies(Chronicles of narnia, harry potter, His dark materials and so forth) this is a very good movie. Honestly if you take out the fantastic score from Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone Id take this over Hp and the SS.(I love greek mythology though)

Some parts of the movie were ridiculous... like finding a pearl at the casino roulette table. I like those other movies you mentioned but... c'mon.
Percy - 2 out of 5 stars.
Wolfman - 2 out of 5 stars.
Up in the Air - I mean this movie was ok, but did not live up to the hype. 3 out of 5.
Moon - 4 out of 5. This movie was freaky in some points but the plot was pretty easy to figure out ...
