Yeah, DoJo with 5-16 shooting and a 5-5 assist-to-turnover ratio...
Definitely not our backup PG of the future!

Just needs a little more consistency on the 3 ball.
His midrange out to 20 feet is pretty consistent though.

What do you guys think of Bernard James? He seems to be getting better with each game - 11 points (5-7), 10 rebounds (3 offensive), 1 steal and 2 blocks in a little under 26 minutes... Not a bad night for the big man.
He had 13 points (6-12), 11 rebounds and 1 steal the other night against Toronto and 9 points (4-4), 8 rebounds, 1 steal and 3 blocks in the first game against Denver, but also 6 fouls in that one.

I only saw the last six or eight minutes of this one. In the little bit I saw, he looked pretty impressive to me. Would like to see more.

Bernard James is quick for a 7 footer. He moves as well as Ian did with the Mavs. He appears to have good shotblocking instincts. His offensive game is limited but when he gets around the rim with the ball he is finishing. He appears to be able to catch the ball.
I can definitely see the Joel Anthony comparison defensively. Anthony is a rugged shotblocker and a pretty good rebounder. But Anthony is so limited offensively, I think James has a little more offensive game because he can score when he catches the ball. He just just can't score in one on one situations.

So Tyson Chandler minus some athleticism?

He's not a 7 footer. He actually looks like a 4/5 to me, if you go strictly by size. I liked his game tonight though.
I like Crowder more every time I see him.

Shawn Marion is high praise. Marion, when he entered the league, was one of the most athletic freaks ever. 6-7 with three range who could get double digit boards.
Is it really fair to compare Crowder to the Matrix? Najera seems like a more reasonable comparison.

He hustles like Najera. But he has a much better shooting stroke than Najera ever did. He doesn't have consistent 3 point range. But he is pretty good from mid range and out to the 3 point line. Najera never had that in his arsenal. And Crowder seems luch more willing to pass the ball than Najera. But the similarities in their tenacity to play the game is definitely there.
One thing I forgot to add about James. He RUNS the floor. That is rare to see in big men, and those that do tend to find good scoring opportunities. He has beaten his man down the court a handful of times the last couple of games and in doing so has gotten an easy look at the rim. Maybe that's the military mindset, maybe it was always him. Either way it is nice to see. And if the Mavs use him at all this for a few minutes, with guys like Collison/Mayo pushing the ball...

Najera isn't really an apt comparison - he's definitely more of a Matrix-lite... The guy is pretty damn athletic.

As long as Crowder doesn't get a deer in the headlights moment when real NBA players come his way, he's going to have an impact on the roster. It's looking more and more like that was a sneaky ass pick by the Mavs.
James really does look fluid when he's running. There's no plodding or anything, it looks smooth.

Did someone compare Crowder to Marion? That's a really poor comparison, from body type to game to athleticism.
Crowder is a really intriguing player. His floor seems to be pretty high. I'd be shocked if he weren't at least a fringe NBA player for a long time. But the flip side is his ceiling is pretty low. He's not getting above a solid-average starter.
This team loves players that can play multiple positions, don't they?

I feel like maybe you're being affected by the current day Matrix.
Shawn Marion was one of the most incredible athletic, fast, freaks of nature that anyone had ever seen when he came into the league.
Crowder is a fairly athletic dude for his bulk, but Shawn Marion is pretty far down the list of compes I'd give for him.
Personally I think he's a poor man's Ron Artest.

Jthig, I agree with that assessment in his "talent range." He will never be an all-star but I can envision him carving out a career similar to Ron Artest, Arron Affalo and the like. Players that are above average who fill voids on competitive teams.

Ron Artest was an all star caliber player at his peak, so I don't really agree with his career as a comp (but certainly his body is).
But yes, I agree that he seems like a good bet to be a good role player for a long time.

Well but let's be real also. Ron Artest made the all-star game one year. I wouldn't really call Artest an all-star caliber player either. Same reason I wouldn't call Josh Howard or Devin Harris one. Hell, Jamal MacGloire made an all-star game one time.
The point is about Artest is he was always just a notch below the "stars." Nothing wrong with that because he has been a good player for teams. Afflao fits that bill as well. A good player that fills holes but a notch or two below the stars.
Crowder will be in that mold. Never being a star but will find a niche for teams and be a solid contributor.

Good god, if a DC and Roddy for starting PG is even remotely close I will lose my sht. Roddy can not run the point.

I think Donnie said it hoping that the other 29 teams were listening to the broadcast and would call the Mavs looking to get him in a trade.
Of course most Mav fans were like this after Roddy would be the starting point:

Yep, current Matrix... I'm talking about how he'll fit now, not making a comparison of what one guy was to what another guy could be...

Which I'm guessing 90+% of the league is. Gotta love a good role player who knows his role.
Gotta have those dudes. If Crowder is a serious role player-type, that is a great pick by the Mavs!

Well I think Artest was an all star level. Defense often goes overlooked when choosing all stars, and Artest is insane. Those were two factors working against him.
But in his prime he was a guy that scored 18+ a game (although not terribly efficient) while being one of the best defenderse in basketball at multiple positions. He wasn't a franchise player, but he was all star caliber, for sure.

According to BG's tweets, there was still interest in Roddy during draft night. If they wanted to trade him, they could have.

No question about that, he had way more impact on games in his best seasons than a fringe all-star like Devin, J-Ho, etc. He was a total difference maker on the defensive end.

Or maybe Donnie doesn't irrationally crap on Roddy like most of Mavs land. It may be a long shot, but the crow that will be eaten if Roddy reaches his potential this season...
Of course, I still think trying to force the pg position on Roddy isn't the way to go, but hey...

And what else would he say? That no teams have interest in him at all? Whether he believes Roddy is going to be productive or not, for the team, he has to try and sell other teams on his ability. If he doesn't then there is no trade value whatsoever.

It really does seem like they drafted some good young men. After talking to Crowder and Cunningham this afternoon, they're eager to get back to Dallas and continuing to work on their craft. Crowder said he's been watching the games over again but with the sound down, so he hasn't noticed that commentators have been raving about him. He said it was nice to hear that, but he's not letting that do anything to him in terms of messing with his progress as a rookie.

Another couple notes:
Carlisle has been interacting with the rookies during the Summer League, but he's making sure not to step on Monte Mathis' toes as he's running the show in Vegas.
Apparently Darrell Armstrong is getting in the ear of the rookies early and often while they're in Vegas. He's doing work on getting them ready for the league but keeping things loose. He's already trying to get them to drink tons of coffee.
Both Crowder and Cunningham said that Jones has been very helpful for their adjustment period into the league. They said that he's been a good leader for them.

RC's taking on Monte's role as the assistant, I'm sure he's not going over strategy with the rookies, but more individual details. Monte's hands are too full to work individually with the players.

I'm reading really good things about Jae Crowder lately... seems that he will be a great player. A poor Ron Artest in his prime. After I read those things I 'm starting to believe he will be the Kenneth Faried of this draft... Mavs intrigue me a lot drafting him over Draymond Green...a plyer that a lot of teams were really high...seems that they are right and the kid can play.
