I wonder if they talked before free agency started about teaming up? That would fall in line with my thoughts that Parsons might leave even if the Mavs offered him the max.

@jared_thigpen: @espn_macmahon If Mavs gave Parsons max at 12:01, safe to say the conversations of teaming up in Dallas would have happened?
@espn_macmahon: @jared_thigpen Absolutely

I don't understand why Parsons insists on playing it this way. I mean, I get it, athletes are proud people, but doesn't he understand that he had a mediocre season because of injuries? Everybody knows he is a good player, he obviously does, but can't he understand that team offices have to factor health in as well? I guess he can't.

They still don't understand the market and probably never will at this point.
And that's fine if you understand that rebuilding is inevitable. If you aren't willing to pay players, then what choice do you have left?

Maybe this was inevitable in the last years of Dirk. They know rebuilding will come and can't get themselves locked into bad contracts. But with the cap bonanza you'll land absolutely nobody with a conservative approach.
Safe to say though that their promise of bringing more guys in long-term hasn't quite worked the last two years.

Too bad JThig doesn't post here anymore because he's always on point:
@jared_thigpen: Not overpaying in free agency is what you do when you're on the rise and need to not hamstring yourself as you compete for the next 5 years
@jared_thigpen: That is NOT the position Mavs are in. They should be helping Dirk get to retirement with dignity on good teams that compete in the playoffs

Right, and this would be all good and well if the FO understood that rebuilding is officially inevitable. Especially if they aren't even going to entertain the idea of guys like Dwight Howard...

Yeah but the only place that applies right now is with Parsons. They didn't "overpay" for Parsons. But even with Parsons there is no guarantee we would have gotten anyone else. Memphis just needs to offer Conley his 5th year to wipe that idea out. Whiteside only cared about money and Heat can offer slightly more than we can with raises. If Mavs threw a max offer at anyone not named Lin or Mozgov so far it wouldn't have landed anyone outside of Parsons.
And the bitter fan in me wants to point out resigning Parsons doesn't translate to competing in the playoffs like suggested. At least that is what the last 2 years have taught us.

I'm gonna say this: IF the Mavs are really concerned with Parson's knees, all right. They had more insight than anybody and I would not challenge their assessment.
But I think we once again tried to do the value play, which simply does not work in this situation. And it's getting more unlikely with every minute that we're getting an adequate replacement, so this team is much more competitive with Parsons than without.
The Mavs need to decide whether they want to find the next cornerstone for decades to come or win right now. Both doesn't work. Unless you're the Spurs. Look how "win now" New York has approached the free agency and compare that to the "win now but we also don't want to completely ruin our future" Mavs.

I'm really curious what will happen this offseason. Reportedly we were only inches away from rebuilding when the DJ deal went south. Mavs suggest they're all in when they are clearly not and at some point, with or without Dirk, you're forced to throw the towel.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. One could argue the Mavs best lineup last season was Barea, Matthews, Anderson, Dirk, Mejri.
Parsons had a few really good games here and there, but he didn't really show up against the tough competition when you needed him. And the second knee injury was the decider.
None of how the FO dealt with him bothered me...
HOWEVER, if they balk and suddenly won't use the cap space now like is being reported? Say whaaat? Delusion is really kicking in if true. They absolutely need to go after Howard.

Yeah I can only cling to the idea that we just were not confident in Parson's knee. Because otherwise we basically drew a line in the sand and said we can pay Parsons 17-18m a year but not 22... and then turn around and supposedly offer Batum 25-26m a year. So we said no to 5m per year raise to Parsons and all our hopes hinged on landing 2 free agent players at max contracts in a year where everyone has money to throw out a max and 2 of the 3 we target have the possibility of a 5th year offered by current team.
For my sanity to remain intact I need to believe Parsons knee is a ticking time bomb and that even if we did give him his 22m there is no guarantee we would have gotten Whiteside or Conley. The Dwight + CP scenario was always IMO the most likely to succeed of the plans but last I heard Mavs rly had no interest and possibly Dirk himself wanted no part of Dwight. And even then we all saw Parsons fit next to Dirk was not great.

4 years 96 million lol.......well......this is just where we are at. You want 2nd or 3rd tier players? You have to pay the 22 million per year. If you don't....go and actually draft talent.

The cap is projected to go up by a gazillion again next year. This could actually be very reasonable deals. I'm by far not a caxpert, but paying your second best player 22% of the cap doesn't sound too bad. It's just crazy times.

And possibly Conley for that matter.
Grizzlies might be a better team, but they still aren't a contender. And they won't be able to rebound worth sh**.

Parsons are going to have a great legacy...
Most of the Rockets fans dislike him
Most of the Mavs fan are going to dislike him
Probably soon most of the Grizz fans too after his knees or back giving up again
At least he has enough money to spend on awesome instagram fotos

I don't understand why people are upset with Parsons. Dallas refused to offer him a max contract, and other good teams did. Parsons did exactly what he should have done here.

Memphis can have the most brittle slow team in the league next season though. Gambling on Parsons and now 32 year old 7 footer Gasol makes me laugh. Not to mention how slow Randolph is going to be, the guy is declining with his weight and speed. So I can almost guarantee Memphis wont be contenders just by adding Parsons. Or even get close past the 2nd round.

I don't think people are upset that he took a bigger offer somewhere else. People are upset that he acted offended by the Mavs not offering him a max deal, when A: he only came here in the first place because one the 20 greatest players ever agreed to take a paycut, and B: Parson's secondary role here from day one was to "recruit" other FA's and try to convince THEM to take less than they were worth to play here.
I don't blame him for taking the best offer he can get. Hypocrisy OTOH does get my goat.

He should be offended...don't the Mavs have to spend 90% of their cap? What are they going to do with that money?

Parsons can suck my dick. If he's going to be offended when someone offers him less than the max, then maybe he shouldn't spend his career trying to convince other players to take less than the max.

Who did he try to convince to take less than the max? The Mavs didn't offer the max and Grizz and Blazers did. They are better than the Mavs. WHy he didn't chose Portland is probably a bigger question. Either way, I don't fault the Mavs for not giving it to him and I don't fault Parsons for going elsewhere. Mavs are in no position to be picky and penny pinch. They want to play the free agency game but don't want to overpay lol.

They didn't want to play the free agency game with Parsons. Once he opted out they were done with him. They were more than willing to pay thier top three targets whatever it took.

@espn_macmahon: Text message from Chandler Parsons on why he chose the Grizzlies: "I really believed in Coach Fiz. Nobody in the league has coached better wings than him. I trust [assistant coach J.B. Bickerstaff] with my life. They have nobody like me, and their veteran, experienced players are a perfect fit with me.
"Toughest decision of my life though. Portland is incredible."
