Pretty interesting...Mostly social commentary but the quotes from the original SI writer are good. Tractor Traylor was surely a sad case.
http://www.thenation.com/blog/165610...explains-world
Quote:
It’s unbelievable that these two folks were traded for one another. But equally unbelievable is that this was seen as a steal for the Milwaukee Bucks. Then CNN/SI scribe Dan Shanoff wrote at the time, “After trading away No. 4 draft-pick Stephon Marbury last year, the Bucks get it right in ’98 by stealing the marketable and talented Robert Traylor from the Mavs for an overhyped foreign prospect.”
I asked Dan Shanoff about this ill-fated prediction this week, and he said, “Looking back, I am mostly appalled at my simple-minded analysis and implicit xenophobia. Projecting (and developing) draft picks into Hall of Famers demands imagination that Don Nelson and Mark Cuban clearly had and I lacked. I also didn’t account for the maniacal dedication that Dirk would put in to honing his craft. It is perhaps the ultimate irony that as my 5-year-old son became aware of basketball this past spring, he announced that Dirk was his favorite player. Nowitzki’s talents are that obvious. I only wish I could have understood that back then.”

Scott Skiles ... Almost sig worthy...

(On the Game) "Particularly on the defensive end, we needed a great competitive effort. Against a team like that with all the shooters they have, they're going to spread the ball around the floor and hurt you. When you're down 15 at half and Dirk (Nowitzki) only has four points, it's probably not a good sign."

“I remember LeBron talking about him,” West said, “and saying that he thought Dirk was the best player in the league and he really meant that. His skill set and the footwork and just being able to basically do what he wanted at his own pace. It’s like playing against your big brother in the garage. When game point came, you know he’s going to get it. He’s going to back you all the way down and shoot whatever shot he wants. He’s going to make it.”

I'm still wondering what the dirkster yelled to Delonte and why he was so animated about that win. Would love for someone to find out...it's the making of a team-mate and the forging of chemistry that is very interesting.
This article is mostly about LeChoke's failings juxtaposed alongside Dirk's greatness. A little gushy but when it comes to the dirkster gushy and hyperbole is okay.
http://www.thefastertimes.com/basket...-lebron-james/
Quote:
This past Wednesday the Dallas Mavericks were tied with the Boston Celtics. Paul Pierce had just landed a game-tying three, and the Mavs were down to their last possession. Kevin Garnett bodied up to Dirk on the perimeter, his chest against Nowitzki’s ribcage. Dirk stepped into Garnett, swung his elbow high and wide towards Garnett’s temple and drove so slowly and methodically to the basket that his grimace cut across my television screen like a crack through a thick layer of ice. When he got to within two feet of the rim, he wrestled the ball up in arthritic maneuver, was fouled by Brandon Bass coming over on a late rotation, and the ball fell through without so much as grazing the net–submitting to gravity is always easier than resisting it–and while the game winning shot looked like something from a middle aged Church League, Dirk’s ring made it into a stunning example of what it means to be a champion.
Dirk Nowitzki’s teammates pulled him off the floor; an act that last year would have made him look like a failed and wounded warrior in need of a crutch rather than a conquering king in need of anointing. They pounded his chest, exchanged war cries, and stared at each other with the utmost certainty. They believed in themselves because of Dirk Nowitzki and Dirk Nowitzki wins games, always, when in the past, prior to him having a ring, an outside observer might be prone to wonder whether Nowitzki needed more from his teammates than they did from him, that perhaps he sought mercy from defeat’s glare by counting himself among them, that he wasn’t ready to be what they needed, that his seven foot frame was hyperbolic of what the man truly was deep inside his heart.
People don’t ask those questions anymore.
The last player who came to Dirk Nowitzki after he outmuscled Kevin Garnett was the prodigal Delonte West. Dirk put an arm around his new teammate’s head, tilted it toward his lips, and yelled something tribal to a player best known for his struggles with mental illness, illegal gun possession, and the crude rumors of having slept with a much more talented teammate’s mother. But, with Dirk yelling in his ear, all that seemed to disappear, because when Dirk speaks on redemption and triumph and journeys out of the abyss now, well, now he’s a credible source and men of all walks and angles listen to a man like that. And the symmetry of the circumstances is enough to make one wonder, too, what LeBron James could one day be.

A little more to add to that interview.

Quote:
Delonte fan of Nowitzki
Delonte West has played with some of the NBA’s best, James, Garnett, Pierce and Allen, but it didn’t take him long to appreciate playing with Dirk Nowitzki. Even though West has played with Nowitzki for less than a month in Dallas, he sees why the veteran forward belongs among the game’s elite.
West said that just before the Celtics hosted the Mavericks on Wednesday, and with 5.6 seconds left Nowitzki did exactly what West had said: He backed down Garnett and then spun and laid the ball in the basket as Bass fouled him. Nowitzki’s three-point play broke an 85-85 tie and sparked a 90-85 victory.
“It’s a fun situation to be in,” Nowitzki said. “Everybody’s looking at you and your team really depends on you, so I like to be in the position where I can make something happen.”
Nowitzki is 33, but West marvels at how hard he works.
“In training camp,” West said, “when all us older guys were struggling, icing our knees, he was coming back running line drills on his own with the training staff. That says a lot.”
At the end of each practice, the Mavs conduct a competition and ring a bell whenever someone makes 20 of 25 3-point attempts.
“He’s always around 23 or 24,” West said. “The bell rings every day.”
West worked stocking furniture during the lockout so he was glad to see the season begin.
“It told me the league minimum ain’t that bad,” West said.

I don't know if it's a late slip, but someone's suggesting Dirk might have a drinking problem in addition to his offseason cocaine issues: http://vimeo.com/35648276
What's next, Dirk?!

It is sad to say but Dirk really sucks in this season. We know he is the greatest Dallas Mavericks player ever and everybody appreciate it.He is the NBA champ and it is great. But it is past. Now we have 2011/2012 season and 43 games to go.Yes i know this team is deep and our guys are good players but the most important guy is number 41.I am so disappointed his condition. He is not ready for this season. When we won with PHX,NOH or DET we are so happy but when we paly with OKC,SAS,MIN this team have big problem!WHY?Because our problem is Dirk. When he plays bad rest of the team also.He needs the rest. And when he will be ready for 100% he should play.It is sad but it is true.So Mr.Carlisle please give him a break. If he won't be ready for the Playoffs time we end in first round like in 2007 and 2009

I find it disgusting how some poster on this board write about Dirk, after what he did just half a year ago. Can't image that Duncan has received that amount of critcism and doubt by Spurs fans over the past few years he has been steadily declining.
Dirk deserves better than that.

By that same token, the Mavs are paying him 20 million a year. And not for him to be averaging 15 and 6.

Unfortunately there are the same number of rude wannabes spur fans as there are here.

By the same token he took less money to play here and has busted his ever loving rear end for a decade. Any conclusions being jumped to out of this cluster of a season are knee jerk. Everyone thought that the season would be cancelled and only a fool would create this type of season schedule and have a two week training camp all the while having a two week preseason trading period.
Very stupid and players are going to get hurt and many games are going to suck. Given the choice of this crappy product and a cancelled season I would have opted to cancel.
It still shocks me how the union signed off on this. And the owners are just as stupid, playing risks with their personnel.

You know he actually may be done, one day he will be and it might be just this quick, but damn...yakking about his contract, disrespecting him...is pretty tough to take on a mavs message board.

Yeah, because Dirk is the first high-dollar player to ever get injured...
(unless you think his stats are the result of him simply not giving a sh!t?)

Remember all of the dumbass Mavs fans who booed nashie every time he touched the ball when he was gutting it out while injured? It appears they are still around.

Very well said. Seeing Dirk struggling out there has been painful to watch, but it's just a slump/dealing with an injury. Will always stand by him as a fan, as any true Maverick fan should.

NOOOOOO!!! Not Dirk!
This might be the end fellas. Charles Barkley was just on Galloway and says without a doubt Dirk is just old. 14 years in the league and countless playoff runs. Galloway counters with "well he was just the best player in the world 6 months ago". Barkley says It just happens that fast. Especially with great players. It's much more noticeable since he's such a great player. He said a guy that wasn't that good can hide their decline much easier.

Im pretty sure Dirks ASG streak will end.
Love, Griffin, LMA, thats three PF clearly above him right now. Millsap has a strong season, with Bynum,M.Gasol and Gortat three solid center that could be allstars...
Sucks that his streak probably end....Duncan got some undeserved ASG the past years but the competition is too strong.
And Z.Randolph injuried and Amare in the east and still a sick PF lineup in the west..
