For anyone doubting Nico, this is who we played this time last year. What a difference a year makes.

It's amazing that Frank and Bullock are one foot out of the league too. And Theo Pinson getting 20 minutes.
That's why the Wood hate was often unfair. Can't tell me that Frnak, Theo, or Bullock were any better. Yikes.

The Dallas Mavericks improved to 8-0 this season in games played without Grant Williams after defeating the San Antonio Spurs.

Just gonna put this here as a media gripe....
All of a sudden everyone is coming out of the woodwork to defend Giannis, because he's playing so well, and yet theyre getting their ass kicked. Lost 7 of last 10. Excuse after excuse for their lack of roster, running through coaches, he shouldnt have to play this hard just for a chance to beat the grizzlies etc....
It would be real god damn nice if Luka ever got that treatment...instead he was constantly blamed for it all.
And giannis is ahead of him with mvp voters.

Forget Giannis...how about Lillard who has somehow gotten a free pass all season.
In fact, all of Lillard's career was just that he didn't have the right help.
But Luka better get on a goddamn treadmill and bend the universe!

Luka has a bit of an uphill battle. He whines to refs, Hes white, He's slovenian. Maybe the complain techs set him apart from Jokic.
He also makes the game look too easy while being on the MJ and Lebron trajectory.

It should also be noted that we went to the WCF with Maxi and Powell as our bigs. Yikes.
Having Lively and Gafford makes a huge difference. Annoying that it took this long, but better late than never.
And thank god they didn't cave to get Ayton. That's the best non-move in recent history.

I'll just say, if he's there, we should pounce. Perhaps even trade up. He'd allow flexibility to lose one of Maxi/Powell. The downside is he absolutely does not shoot. He showed some improvement on his touch with his mid-range and free throws, but never even attempted a 3 at Arkansas. He will be limited to a PnR big man much like Powell early on, but with much better defense. Gafford is really long in addition to his height. He will continue to grow into his body and needs to add weight to his frame, but can easily take it on without sacrificing his elite athleticism. Already a really tough shot blocker, he has even more room for improvement with technique.
I think at this spot in the draft, you start thinking intangibles, too. An excellent young man with no issues on or off the court, great family, and will bust his ass. I'd frankly be ecstatic to watch him play basketball for one of my favorite teams for at least the next 3-4 years.
|
Went back to some old draft and then some trade threads. I was trying not to be too homerish back then, but realllly wanted Gafford for the Mavs and especially to pair with Luka.
More props to tap2390 though as they were on Gafford both in the draft thread and as a trade target last year. Others that were on Gafford were Underdog and EricaLubarsky, and a few more.
Sometimes the diehard fans might know more than the front offices...but I'm also humble enough to say I don't know even half of the stuff that goes on there lol

Luka didn?t practice (Mexico)
Exum didn?t practice (injury)
Exum has played two games since the new year (2 of 22 games)
Was hoping we?d have him back out of the break but looks unlikely. Wonder if he?ll play any of our last 27 games

It does sound more optimistic though per Afseth...
"Jason Kidd mentioned Dante Exum hasn't suffered a setback and could return during the upcoming four-game road trip: "No setback. He's been working out. He'll practice tomorrow, non-contact. I think the plan is for somewhere on that road trip to get him back."

Good call. Many of Us die hards around here have a finger on the pulse of the team quite a bit.

Tomorrow we fire up thr playoff machine and try to drive it into town.
I dont think we can overstate what it would mean to beat the Suns right out of thr gate.

I'm gonna be really pissed if we come out lacking in the first two quarters. Kidd still has preparation issues that needs to be fixed.
This is one of the most important stretches in franchise history IMO. We have the team and talent now. Excuses will be 0.

Luka entered the ASB looking overweight and out of shape - not uncommon. And I'm certain that his ASB didn't consist of salmon, garden salad and quinoa. Hopefully the team can continue to produce in the others areas that helps to mask Luka's lack of fitness and desire to get back on defense.

Looks like Brunson himself has gone public with his version of the non-extension. I personally am happy where the Mavs are as I'm sure the Knicks feel the same. In the end, Brunson got paid a lot more and gets to run his own team. No one ever mentions the hiring of his dad and uncle/godfather or whatever as a pretty key detail in him going to NY.
Regardless, another anecdote of the failure of the previous FO, namely Donnie Nelson. First for not tacking on the 4th year on a 2nd round pick, and then again for allegedly turning down the initial early extension twice.
I'm glad to have Nico and a lesser version of Cuban.

I used to get upset over it
But then you realize Luka just doesn't committ like a LeBron or Giannis to his fitness program.
He's just never going to be that guy no matter how much we'd like to see him do it.
Just have to hope he delivers a title before poor habits catch up to him and his body.

Yeah, I'll be glad when player opinion week is over with and we're back to basketball.
Can't believe people are going on about Brunson.....again.
What's silly is he made the right decision NOT getting the so-called 4/55 and getting double that to play for the team he wanted. Like, why are you talking about the Mavericks still?
But we don't Cuban as owner and Donnie as GM anymore. So it's moot to keep on about it.

Bro had 11 rebounds and 15 assists going into the break. Its the best he's looked this deep into a season.

I haven?t seen the interview or paid any attention to the story, but Nico took over in the summer before Brunson?s last season, so wouldn?t it be him instead of Donnie that turned down the extension before the season and at the deadline? Also, ?not tacking on the 4th year? he was here for 4 years.

He?s like first or nearly first in minutes per game for the entire league. He?s been playing an unsustainable amount of minutes in the games leading up to the all star break. Try again

Remember when Powell was our center rotation?
This time last year Powell started and played 20min. Wood relieved him and Bertans was our third center.
That was one year ago

Sorry, I misrepresented it. I meant the failure being the non-RFA status from the jump.

If we had Lively and Gafford two years ago, we might have won the title. Not an exaggeration.

Exum practiced today
Won?t play tomorrow but is on his way back.
Honestly think a Wiley defensive guard with a high BBIQ could bring us to the next level.

Kyrie Irving returned from a six-game absence seven games ago
The Dallas Mavericks are 7-0 since then
In that stretch, Kai is averaging?
27.0 PPG
5.9 AST
5.6 REB
1.1 STL
58.1% FG
46.0% 3P (7.1 ATT/G)

Yeah, it doesn't seem smart, but it was easily fixed by the current regime, if Brunson's story was correct. I just choose to blame Mark. Nico was still new at the job.

Great point and observation. People sometimes forget and fail to notice or appreciate the most obvious thing. But yeah, Maxi is back too and overall defense is a bit better too.

Luka rolled his ankle and is questionable Friday.
I have damn tickets for Sunday after holding off for so long. Last two games I went to Luke didn't play. Can't tell you how frustrating it would be if he played against the Celtics and took Sunday off.

I just watched one possession with OKC and I think every player touched the ball. Kept passing until they found the open man under the rim. Beautiful basketball.

And since then he's been:
27.0 PPG
2.8 AST
4.4 REB
0.8 STL
47.9% FG
41.7% 3P
That is a very, very significant drop in assists. A drop by more than half. A ball in Irving's hands means that ball spending less time the hands of THJ and Green. He didn't have a single game with 5 assists since then and he averaged nearly 6. He came into the league AS A POINT GUARD. It is good for Mavs when he scores AND CREATES PLAYS FOR OTHERS.
And that drop in the field-goal percentage is statistically very significant.
