Remember that Tyson didn't have any impact on Point in the Paint last season, so this is a bit surprising.
Tells you that Mavs main issue is perimeter defense, an area in which Kidd & Terry have struggled so far.

You don't have to be overly concerned right now. Hit the panic button if Odom plays like this by the time the All-Star Break is around the corner in February. Because the schedule will majorly toughen up with quality opponents and a 9-in-12 stretch in March. Until then it looks fairly manageable. The Mavs have a four game road-trip coming up in L.A. (playing both the Clippers and the Lakers), Utah and New Orleans but outside that I think now is the time to give Odom playing time even when not producing like anticipated. Looking at opponents it shouldn't result in any additional losses down the stretch.

Sometimes this 'play-when-you-produce-otherwise-sit' doesn't fare well simply because certain players/characters need playing time to develop chemistry and confidence on the court.

Odom needs a STRUCTURE and not playing time. This guy should not be put in ISO situations, somewhere at the 3pt line. He needs OPEN LOOKS, and some easy baskets. Odom is versatile, but he is not Lebron James. This guy needs some help on offense,... and more playing time of course.

Not directly Mavs related, but fits the current discussion about not overplaying our premier players:

Yeah - rest is going to be a hell of a commodity this season.
Among qualified players, the mavs top 3 players in MPG are Dirk (ranked 70th), Jet (ranked 85th), and Marion (97th). No one else is in the top 150. If you count all players, Kidd is just ahead of Jet.
I'd especially like each guy to get a couple of days of rest in February, and for the team to get about 4 or 5 days off before the playoffs start as well.

Looks like we might see Brandon Wright getting some more minutes before too long.

NBA Season Is The Tale Of Two Halves For Dallas Mavericks, Dirk Nowitzki: http://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2012/2/...mavericks-dirk
Quote:
This pattern has established throughout the season. In the last 12 games, Dallas was able to score over 100 Points per 100 Possessions in the first half every single time, but could only reach this mark in the second half three times. The chart on the right shows the Efficiency Development over the course of a game for the Mavs and it illustrates that the defense remains more or less stable throughout, but the offense takes a significant hit around halftime. Dirk, Rick Carlisle and others repeatedly said that 3rd quarter energy has been a problem along the way and the numbers certainly agree.

My tribute to Brendan Haywood's strong play in recent weeks:
http://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2012/2/...ks-best-player
Quote:
So while his achievements might be overshadowed by the impact of Brandan Wright or the stellar play of Dirk Nowitzki lately, Haywood has stepped in just nicely after the departure of Tyson Chandler. He has quietly emerged as one of the better centers in this league, ranking 11th in WS48 and WP48 since January 18th among all players that played at least 200 minutes at that position.

Also a good read:

We’re likely to overestimate the odds or importance of an event based on how easy it is to remember. Clutch shots are a great example of this. I’m not saying clutch shots aren’t fun, or memorable or even not important. I’m just saying perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to define players based on actions that make up less than 5% of their offensive plays.

I was reading Bryan's article here and he mentioned the triangle of trust. Ive always thought that the coach has an huge impact on personnel decisions. Avery got his guys and Carlisle gets his guys. Cubes/Donnie ate the same. Oh what a difference a competent coach makes.
Deron/Dwight...you'd best take note....Avery is not only coach but he will bring in devean George!

Dumbass Avery...he could definitely use a therapist.. Crazy Napoleon complex.
"Mentally tough
Pro teams spend millions of dollars to treat players’ knees, elbows, backs and other body parts but, Eppright says, most probably don’t allocate enough for players’ minds.
In the spring of 2000, sports psychologist Kalkstein was with the Rangers at Yankee Stadium when his cellphone rang.
The caller informed Kalkstein that new Mavericks owner Mark Cuban wanted to hire him. Furthermore, Cuban wanted Kalkstein to be full-service, attending as many practices and games as possible.
Twelve years later, Kalkstein says he believes he remains the only full-time NBA team psychologist.
“To me, it made common sense,” Cuban says.
Why?
“Guys have got to be ready to play,” Cuban says. “That includes your head, too. It’s not an easy business. Any way we can add value, put our guys in position to succeed, we’re going to do it.”
Kalkstein implemented mental skills programs. His less-official capacity is “sounding board,” for players as well as coaches.
“I do a lot of observation, and then bring those observations to the attention of the athletes at times,” Kalkstein says. “And vice versa. They bring some things to me, and we communicate what it is they would like to do, on a more consistent and optimal basis.”
Kalkstein’s Mavericks tenure was interrupted in January 2006 when, according to Cuban, coach Avery Johnson decided to “get rid” of the psychologist. Five months later, the Mavericks had a 2-0 NBA Finals lead against Miami but unraveled and lost the series after blowing a 13-point lead late in Game 3.
“That didn’t work out, so we brought him back,” Cuban says. “And we don’t win without him."

It was all Avery, all the time. Might be the reason why it ended the way it did. After all, he inherited a tremendous roster from the coach before him. It's not like he did anything to add to it.

Not bad...As they say...read the rest..

Quote:
Does anyone realize that the Dallas Mavericks might be a better team this season than last season?
The easy and lazy assessment of the Mavericks is team owner Mark Cuban has blown up the team that won last season’s NBA title. The hard and difficult assessment is the Mavericks could be better.
The easy and lazy assessment is Cuban didn’t do anything to keep last year’s players together, that he ran off key players such as backup point guard J.J. Barera, center Tyson Chandler and forward Caron Butler. The hard and difficult assessment is Dallas has a salary cap. Cuban didn’t want to pay a luxury tax for going over the salary cap – a position many NBA owners take – and Barera, Chandler and Butler left the Mavericks for more money as free agents.
Barera turned down the Mavericks’ one-year contract offer to sign a four-year, $19-million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. And really, has anyone heard of him since? He’s averaging about 11 points, 3 assists and 2 turnovers in 20 minutes per game. Not bad numbers, but I’m not sure they’re worth $4.75 million a year. Dallas picked up guard Delonte West, who’s averaging 8.3 points, 3.4 assists and 1.7 turnovers.
.....

The best defensive lineup in the nba.
http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/pos...dirk-and-the-d
Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PG Jason Kidd | SG Vince Carter | SF Shawn Marion | PF Dirk Nowitzki | C Brendan Haywood
Minutes Played: 154
Offensive Rating: 107.4 points per 100 possessions
Defensive Rating: 84.6 points per 100 possessions
How it works offensively
It would be insulting to call the Mavericks' offense rudimentary, but when you cue up the tape and watch a stream of possessions with this group of guys, one thing is so readily apparent:
They make basketball easy.
There's rarely a wasted movement or pass, and each time this Dallas unit crosses the time line, it has a singular purpose: It wants to extend your defense -- and it's going to use Dirk Nowitzki to do it.
It all starts with feeding Nowitzki at his favorite spot on the right side of the floor. Ever since Karl Malone retired, we've heard coaches and analysts refer to the "Karl Malone area" just off the mid-left post. Pretty soon, the "Dirk spot" off the right elbow will become commonplace for basketball commentators and geographers. Most nights, the Mavs have a matchup advantage with Nowtizki, and they'll get him the ball promptly with either a quick entry pass or a pick-and-pop. Against more advanced defenses -- or just to switch things up -- Kidd will run a little misdirection on the left side (maybe with Shawn Marion), while Brendan Haywood frees up Nowitzki by pinning his defender with a down screen.
Once he has the ball in his hands, Nowitzki can feast on a shorter or less capable defender. He'll bounce off his left foot, kick with his right and drain fadeaways from that spot all night.
Send a double-team at Dirk, and the gamesmanship begins. Nowitzki is seven feet tall and he's been doing this basketball thing for a while now, so an extra defender doesn't faze him. Send that guy from the top of the floor, and Nowitzki will find Vince Carter or Kidd.
The Vinsanity ended a long time ago, but Carter is still capable of hitting a wide open shot or attacking a rotating defender. As for Kidd, whose long-range shot is just beginning to reappear after its prolonged absence, he'll either attempts an open jumper or, more often, quickly identify where there's an opportunity.
Marion is the wild card on the floor for this lineup. After many seasons as a freakishly athletic curio with a wonky release on his shot, something interesting has happened -- Marion has become one of the more indispensable two-way players in the game in the half court. When Nowitzki creates defensive chaos for opponents, Marion is often the guy who will read the floor and exploit an opening. Sometimes, it's a back-door cut along the baseline to the rim, where Kidd, Carter or Nowitzki will find him. Other times, Marion will rub his defender off a teammate at the left elbow, catch the ball on the move and finish.
There are plenty of other reliable options for this unit in the half court. They like to use a pick-and-roll on the left side between Kidd and Haywood, with Carter as a post option against smaller defenders. Haywood gets a few duck-ins because teams are often forced to rotate to Dirk from the baseline, or just choose to take their chances by playing off the center.
This unit still hasn't played 200 minutes together, as Haywood's playing time varies. Ian Mahinmi continues to develop, while Haywood has coped with a series of nagging injuries (he's currently suffering from a mild knee sprain).
How it works defensively
Just so we understand -- the best defensive unit in basketball includes a 38-year-old point guard, an aging Carter (who, even in his prime, never cared all that much about D) and Nowitzki?
Crazy as it sounds, that's right -- there isn't a lineup in the NBA that's played more minutes that's given up fewer points per possession than this 5-man unit.
So how does this work exactly?
Step one: Assign Marion to the opponent's most important offensive facilitator -- whether that person is a point guard, slasher, sharpshooter or multi-talented power forward. Marion is a lanky and intuitive defender who's hyper-aware of where you want to go and how you want to get there. Those long arms shrink passing lanes to the size of a coffee stirrer and he's difficult to post up.
The luxury of matching up Marion one-on-one against the most dynamic player on the floor allows the rest of the Mavericks to stay at home as base defenders. This isn't a fast group, so there's not a lot of gambling and you'll rarely see a lot of aggressive fronting. What this group does exceptionally well is communicate. Kidd is constantly scanning the floor for potential problem areas and will shout out instructions to Haywood the instant there's penetration.
Carter is an underrated post defender in the half court, and he's more than capable of bodying up against most wings. Size doesn't slump, so while Nowitzki might not earn a lot of votes for the NBA's all-defensive team, he's taller than most of his counterparts at the 4-slot. And while he might never be Kevin Garnett, Nowitzki's pick-and-roll defense is smart and efficient. He doesn't overextend himself jumping out and he's always thinking recovery.
Haywood isn't the planet's most aggressive pick-and-roll defender -- rather than a hard show, the Mavs' coverages seem to have Haywood defending those actions "flat" -- but his big body and long arms buy Kidd, Carter and Marion plenty of time to get back into a play. Haywood is also quality rim protector who slides along the baseline with relative ease.
This unit will throw the occasional zone at an offense to stifle penetration, but its most defining characteristic is collective smarts. This lineup doesn't make many mistakes. Despite a lack of speed, they rarely foul and manage to amass a ton of turnovers by simply anticipating where the offense wants to go with the ball. When shots go up, fewer than one-fifth of them are collected by the offense for second-chance opportunities.
Come April, we constantly hear how it's the veteran teams -- not the most athletic ones -- that win rings. This unit of oldsters illustrates why.
