murphy3,
no doubt, race still has an impact and it can still be ugly. but it can also have a good impact - if you consider voter turnout a good thing.
but the point is that this doesn't happen 40 years or 20 years ago and maybe not even 10 back.

For those of you complaining about *some* blacks voting for Barack because he's black...
what about those whites who voted for mccain because he's NOT black.
Seriously GTFO. Bash him if he messes up in his presidency, don't stoop to that level at this time.

If I were African American, I would be ashamed of what my fellow African Americans have shown me over the past several months.... just as I am a whitey ashamed of what I've seen from many Whitey Americans.
It will always be that way. There will always be a section of society that is ignorant. It won't be specifically one particular race, but mankind on the whole. Face it, there's alot of ignorance out there. Perhaps it will get better. I believe that it has in my life time. But, many people will always find a reason to hate one another. If it's not race with some, they'll find some other reason.

I'm not sure if it's more remarkable that someone of half-African American descent can get elected, where as that could have never happened 20, 30, 40 years ago, or if it's more remarkable that someone with ideas incredibly similar to those so feared during the cold war can get elected, where as that could have never happened 20, 30, 40 years ago. Certainly historic.

Exactly. And all of it is due to ignorance. If you're black you should feel guilty about voting for a black man? 92's logic is so effin' stupid. He has no idea on why people voted the way they did. Sure there are people who voted for him because he was black and vice versa for McCain.

If anyone, it's probably McCain. I thought he came off as a fairly likeable guy 8 months ago or whenever he won the nomination. Then the Republican advisors and whatnot got ahold of the guy and really botched things imo. If McCain had stuck to the vibes he seemed to be giving off back then, I would have like the guy a lot more. The Palin selection was kind of the nail in the coffin there. I still think McCain is a good guy, but he got brainwashed by the whack direction of the current powers-that-be in the republican party.

I wish the best for Obama. I don't believe he's a good man. I think quite the opposite. I do believe that America will look back and think "what in the hell were we thinking." But, he will be our president, so I hope he proves me wrong. I don't wish for failure of anyone that is put in place to make difficult decisions for our country. Once elected, I wish them nothing but the best. I suppose that's the good part of me not really having a party affiliation.

race has had an influence in our elections since black americans were granted the right to vote.
this time however race was a positive element in the election.
imo obama didn't run as a black american, he ran as an american who happened to be black.
is black americans voting for obama because of he's black anything different than a voter going with a candidate for what state they are from, or how young/old they are, or any other reason except what their policy positions are?
no, not at all.

The count is 45 million to 42 million right now. He had a lot better chance than I thought he did. Had it not been for the economic tsunami 30 years in the making that came crashing down a month ago...who knows?

Right. Obama isn't going to come anywhere near winning the white vote. Whites voted for McCain in greater percentage than the electorate as a whole did? So the hell what? You can vote however you like, as those kids on the YouTube video rapped. You don't have to argue your case.
Politics is ALL about voting blocs. If blacks are a voting bloc, if whites are a voting bloc, if Latinos are a voting bloc, if anyone else is a voting bloc...well, that's just the way the world works.

Whites voting against Obama because he's black is as sick as blacks voting for Obama because he's black.
I have voted based on the issues all the way through.
I would like to see folks calling out racial ignorance, instead of ignoring it.
Barak was and is not the best candidate. He will do Liberals proud, but he will not do justice for the American people and least of all his own cultural background.
I suppose I should be pleased with the outcome...this will give Republicans and opportunity to truly go after and ask for the African-American vote.
The Republicans are the ones with true opportunity for all and the next 2-4 years will be a prime time for Republicans to make their point and to draw African-Americans back into the party of Martin Luther King.
But for all the celebrations...America is pissed and the watchdogs will be on and in force!!!

Meh, Obama doesn't really strike me as a socialist (unless he radically veers off his campaign promises). I think you have other people you should be more worried about, but that may just be me.

I don't think that anyone has to apologize for voting for a candidate just because they are of the same race. I truthfully wish that race wasn't a deciding factor for some, but it always will be. If you look at 2 candidates and truthfully cannot decide based upon what they stand for, then race or sex probably becomes a deciding factor for many. Hey, something has to be a deciding factor for those that otherwise cannot make up their minds. Perhaps it's age..
Personally, I cannot say that I have ever voted for someone based upon age, sex, or race...but, I suppose there could come a point to where I had to come up with a reason to decide between 2 candidates that I believed were equally qualified.

They are all stupid reasons that frustrate me.
And I'm not saying the wrong guy won, but I hate seeing people vote for stupid reasons. We've probably come along way in that regard, but hey I'm only 22 so I guess this is the first time I've really become cognizant of how many people vote for stupid reasons.

I'm dissapointed in you to be honest. This is one of the most beautiful days in history and you're on a message board spewing hate. Its not even about your opinions of Obama. We can agree to disagree. That's life. But put your hate aside for atleast 2 minutes and realize how beautiful this moment is right now.
