I'd like to thank Verizon for burying my incredibly thin fiber line a mere two inches below the surface. I'd also like to thank my neighbor for digging up baby trees on our property line directly over said fiber line.
Together they conspired to leave me without tv or internet service for 36 hours, starting Saturday evening.
So thanks to them I missed Dirk's first Olympic basketball game, USA vs China, the Cowboys' preseason opener, the final round of the PGA championship, and many, many other things.
So, so angry.

It was a pretty fun sports weekend.

Wire clothes-hangers and some aluminum foil would work.
C'mon... improvise in the name of sports!

She's a 60 year oldy lady and was having a hired yard guy do it. I don't think she even realized she did it and I haven't mentioned it to her yet.
The trees she was digging up were very, very young. They literally didn't dig more than a couple inches. So not her fault, it's all Verizon's, or at least the contractors they hire to run/bury their fiber.

Someone in FIOS customer support should be very, very thankful that I'm not at home today. I was told my new fiber line would be run "first thing in the morning". I just received word from the wife that they just got there to begin digging.
Sheesh.

It's morning somewhere?
I'm glad this hasn't happened to me. I'd be curled up on the floor, going through withdrawal.

If your house is wired for cable, you can usually get the broadcast channels clear as day if you plug the coax in.

Oh, I didn't realize how that worked. I thought FIOS service came from a completely different cable that they put down. In other words, I figured that you would have two different cables coming into your home.

Oh it is different coming to the home. Verizon has their own fiber optic network. But once it gets to a home, it goes through a converter box and distributes on the existing coax network. Understandable assumption on your part.

Chum, jthig32 is correct. the FiOS comes into the house to Verizon's ONT ( http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/12565) , there it is cross connected to the coax which runs throughout your house. The important part of why FiOS is so sweet is because they run Fiber through the last mile. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_mile)
The whole problem with Verizon vs Comcast is: Both companies have a fiber backbone - they have too. The difference is the last mile from each companies respective CO's is Verizon extends the fiber to your home or to your building, where as comcast and the like use copper. The problem is you are reaching the limits of the actual cable. Which is how FiOS can have such throughput. Also, with FiOS you aren't sharing the bandwidth like cable modems.
i guess that is a pretty good explanation.

It took my desk neighbor over an hour to get in to work today from Lewisville, and he left his house at 6:30. I can not even imagine what it looks like right now.

Oh you misunderstand me...traffic was at such a stand still that I had my laptop fired up and sitting on my lap (with a AT&T GT Ultra card) in the car
Which btw, the 3G connection on that thing works great, not sure what all these iPhone user problems are, I never have any problems with the wireless card no matter where I am in DFW.

oh i gotcha. Yeah i've got sprint...but i want to switch to AT&T...the at&t 3G coverage area here in DC is all the way Orange...which means 3G..so that is good.
If you have your laptop fired up and on your lap,..then that is ridiculous traffic. sorry man.

I would like to rant about the self-fulfilling false rumor about a gas shortage that is affecting Nashville, TN (and no other Tennessee areas, it seems). An unfounded rumor came about that Nashville was going to run out of gas - so everyone panics and hits the pump on the same day. So what happens? Nashville runs out of gas! The whole fricking city!

You're right lady. I guess I've never had NBA TV with my standard package.
I guess there are just tiny little people inside of my television set that have been playing on a tiny basketball court.
Bitch.

F**king hard drive starts clicking and then crashes for no reason. Bye bye videos, music, documents and all that time it took to set up my computer exactly how i wanted it.
Got damn.
Time to get a new one.
I've discovered the meaning to life: waiting for the next thing to break so that you can spend more money to buy a new one.
