he didn't look upset. he was laughing, joking around, giving high fives, he seemed pretty darn happy about it really. he does have a hurt ankle so maybe he appreciates the extra rest.

Yes. As I mentioned, he seems alright with it. I just hope he "really is alright with it" internally and not just for show. He seems to be a great guy and he seems to have found his niche in this team. The team obviously loves him.

Anyone have a clue why Rick is using a playoff like 8 man rotation in December?
Good players like Hump, TT, Roddy, and Ross never see the floor.

If Dirk continues at his current pace and our beloved Mavs finish in the top 4 in the West, the MVP award HAS to be his.

i dunno, but they've won 5 in a row so maybe we should give rick the benefit of the doubt.

i agree, but unfortunately they will never ever give him the mvp again, no matter how good he is. he's got his mvp, we want a championship now.

Yeah it works now but playing an 8 man rotation all year isn't good come playoff time. Players will be tired.

Good Game. We looked in control most of the time and loved the ball movement in the 4th. We have a tough home stretch coming up - Houston, Cleveland, Portland, Memphis..followed by @Denver, @Houston. Need to go at least 4-2!

I have been wondering about this myself. My guess is that RC is trying to develop some chemistry between those 8 guys now that J-Ho is back.

No one played 40 minutes tonight. No reason for any of the 8 to be tired.

Rick was pretty openly displeased after the blown lead against NO. I suspect that tonight's very tight rotation was his response.

Well actually, he's been doing this for several games now, so I don't think it's that. I think it's the Howard thing.

Yeah, but at least for the last couple games there have been 9 guys who've gotten minutes (not counting Miami). My thinking was that the additional shortening of the rotation tonight may have been more about Gooden, since his on-court time took the most conspicuous jump tonight. The Mavs are at the point where they need to figure out if they can get him going as a bench player.

It's a good question..My take is that the team isn't playing well enough to give other guys more minutes and I also think he wants to see what his playoff roster is going to look like. Does it need tweaking now? Can the mavs actually get away with playing Dirk at center (I had thought they would do more of that with josh back but damp won't let him).
It's an integration of josh into the playoff roster that I think he wants to see.

I've seen quite enough, myself. He sucked me in while Damp was out but since then he's been flat out awful and is on pace for his worst season as a pro.
The Mavs need to find themselves a real backup center.
As to the rotation, I'm a bit confused as well. I'm curious to see how long this last (and how long JJ stays in the starting lineup).

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Some interesting developments are taking shape on the defensive end for the Dallas Mavericks, whose win streak hit five Wednesday night and tied the club's best stretch of the last two seasons. But nothing's more stunning than this admission by Jason Kidd:
"I think it starts with Dirk and Jet," the 16-year veteran point guard said, referring to Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry. "Those guys talked about playing defense at the beginning of training camp. Those are your two best offensive weapons and those guys are talking about defense. People are always going to talk about [Nowitzki's] offense, but right now I think his defense is the best that I've ever seen."
Nowitzki's defense has gradually improved from his matador days, but Jet, too?
"Jet, too," Kidd continued without a hint of sarcasm. "When you've got your two best offensive players buying into that, everybody else has to jump on board."
Hold onto your headbands, but the Mavs -- now 19-7 after a late defensive surge finally created easy buckets to shake the young Oklahoma City Thunder, 100-86 -- are one of the best defensive clubs going.
|
I believe this is huge. Dirk has taken lots of jibes at his lack of defense and much of it warranted. When he and Jet step up to playing defense then you know they have become some serious trophy-hunters, until then maybe not so much.
Dirk is still top 20 in blocks. With him, damp, shawn, jkiddo and now josh out there, there is some serious defensive force that can be brought to a game. We may be seeing it effect their offense some, it will just have to be that way because defense takes energy.
They need to get josh going offensively and jet.
Bob Ortegal was commenting on a remark made by Followill that Dirk does not stay in slumps long. Ortegal stating that Dirk doesn't because when he sees that his shot isn't falling he'll try harder to get to the line.
That is really a part of Jet's game that is missing (I hate to even compare him to dirk, it's not fair) but he still tries to "shot" himself out of a slump instead of getting closer, getting into the lane and trying something else.
Last night he thought he was going to will himself to shoot better so he jacked up some crap. A 1 on 4 fast break comes to mind and another one where there was no one under the basket. I hope Carlisle reams his ass on that.

Great stuff about Defense, remember they were talking about this during the summer. I don't think it's hurt our offense, still have a lot of ball movement. We've actually got 5 offensively skilled players and all are willing to share, which makes it great for the ball movement.
