Everything I'm hearing from Brooklyn makes me think they're: a) resigned to not getting Dwight, and b) at a minimum still insecure about being able to re-sign Deron.
Edit: just saw the new stuff about JJ. That was a component I was wondering about. Here's hoping that everything they have for JJ is the best they can manage, because that's a pretty mediocre sales pitch on their part.

Why would Deron go to the Nets knowing that most of their cap space is tied up with him, Joe Johnson and Gerald Wallace?
Plus, doesn't that completely screw their chances of getting Dwight?

I'm sure the Mavs will be pointing this out tomorrow.

Interesting about Atlanta wanting Marshon Brooks to be included.

I'm worried Cubes will go the "positive only" route and not even bring up the Nets. Hopefully Deron will be smart enough to notice it on his own.

I would expect that myself. But if he wanted to go that route, he could easily start with, "This is how to build a championship team," and segue right into "This is not how to build a championship team," with a ready example.

I find it amusing that the Hawks are playing hardball with the Nets on this. You know they know that Johnson has one of the league's true albatross contracts, and they're haggling over MarShon Brooks.

But his agent would be much happier if he signed with Brooklyn, right?

You can pretty easily frame the information without it sounding negative. Make the comparison subtle and implicit. You don't tell Deron, "Hey, the Nets will have no cap space to do anything else," you just show him the numbers side by side. Leave out any value judgments. He draws the conclusion in his own mind.
It's much more persuasive that way, too.

yeah it seems like the nets are panicking trying to get joe johnson, giving wallace the contract, and their meeting with nash. the mavs seem like their just putting pieces and looking at options to put around dwill and dirk. maybe they both know already whats about to happen. im at about 70%

Marshon Brooks is a scrub, he is a high volume low effecient scorer that doesn't play defense those are the type of players that lose you games unless they are used in a extremely limited role (10-15 minutes off the bench). I would say that the past rumors (including nets being interested in eric gordon if deron goes to dallas) and there want to try to trade for joe johnson shows that at the very least deron is keeping an open mind about dallas and it's hardly a lock he is coming back to Brooklyn, this is definitely good news.

Kidd should have been showing his ring to Deron. And he could have said: you want one of these? Don't stay in Brooklyn. The Big German will help you get one.

Nets are meeting with Nash today (maybe right now). Wonder what that says about their confidence regarding Deron.

I would read it as probably the smartest thing they've done out of all the alleged things we've heard about. It's creating a true backup plan for if things don't work. Jordan Farmar is nice, but Nash would be a much better cushion to fall on if Deron bolts.

Nets trying to get Joe Johnson
Updated: July 1, 2012, 4:41 PM ET
By Marc Stein and Chad Ford | ESPN.com
If the Nets can convince the Hawks to take on Green or perhaps Kris Humphries in a sign-and-trade, it would allow them to stay over the salary cap
|
That made me laugh. They are trying to commit around $60 milion a year for 4 players.
Their goal of staying over the salary cap should be easy to achive.

Man the Nets are a mess. I can imagine Proko drunk off his ass on vodka yelling into the phone in a thick Russian accent to King. You get me player now!!

This is interesting.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that Nowitzki -- who has maintained a friendship with Williams over the past few seasons -- and Mavs owner Mark Cuban have been making their recruiting pitches to Williams by phone since free agency began Sunday at 12:01 a.m.
Yet with Nowitzki traveling abroad this week and Cuban in Los Angeles working on his "Shark Tank" television show, sources say that Dallas will be represented in Monday's sitdown with Williams by president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson, coach Rick Carlisle and former Mavericks franchise player Michael Finley, who is making the trip in an unofficial ambassadorial role.

I was just about to post that... Love that Dirk and Cuban have been calling him too. The more contact they get with Deron, the more confident I am that they can get it done.

Finley, who looks like he's lost some weight, has been "an unofficial ambassador" for a little while. He's been around the Mavs facility off and on, as recently as Thursday with the draft.

WTF? So you send a guy you amnestied and paid him to play for another team to go and talk to a free agent about how great Dallas is as an organization?
And I think it hurts the Mavs a lot that they aren't the "second pitch" to Deron.

Doubt the order makes a difference. It's not like Mark won't call after the Nets pitch.

:lol this is suppose to be a joke right? Who cares what finley did as a player he is basically with the organization. And Deron isn't an emotional 16 year old high schooler it doesn't matter who gets the first or second pitch.

But Finley.... seriously? Why not just send Ro, or Derek Harper, or Brad Davis... hell send Bob O. That way at the meeting when Deron says he is walking out, Bob O can say: "HE CAN DO THAT!"
Sure Kidd has been with D-Will all week. But I really think Dirk should be right next to Carlisle whether he likes it or not. Who was on Nash's doorstep? Amare + Damn Toni.
Come on.

Probably not their choice on the order.
Again, it's all on the perspective. They loved and still do love Finley, hence him being around the organization, going to games, attending Mav-centric parties. It just made business sense for the amnesty clause to be used on him. It made business sense, but they still feel he's a valuable piece to the franchise for all that he did to do good by him to do what he's doing.

I'll agree with this, for no other reason than that Cuban recommended the fans boo Finley when he arrived back here.

What are the chances he gets his jersey retired? He's #2, behind Dirk, according to me. Nash and Terry can fight it out for #3.
