No crap. That would most definitely be the oldest starting lineup in the NBA. Starting PG and starting C are the most important moves. IMHO, at PG the most realistic and likely best targets would be Calderon and Jack. Maybe Billups could be play off the bench, but if we need to squeeze every bit of cap space, might as well look to see if Akognon can fit that role on the cheap. Same thing at SG, if we need to squeeze every bit of cap space, might as well draft a SG or keep Morrow as a 3 point specialist with Carter off the bench (or Carter starting with Morrow of the bench). Center is tough this year. Not really sure what to do really. Lot's to gamble on Bynum, probably going to be the best available. But I'd hate to overspend on him. And would really hope he could play effectively one year here and then be traded for a lottery pick next year. We'll see...

Billups is fine if we have Calathes and he's looking close to being ready to take the wheel soon. Billups is an extremely smart player and would definitely know how to maximize Dirk. It blows my mind why from a basketball standpoint anyone would be against him.

I really like Jack as previously mentioned. Not so much on Calderon tho. Jack is a feisty experienced player and will go hard on both ends. He is my first option and it's not even worth contacting CP3 imo.

We'd be in the playoffs right now if we had Chauncey Billups instead of Mike James.

Not that he's a long-term solution or anything, but he'd be a solid stopgap while we're waiting for Dirk & Matrix to come off the books... There will be several quality PG's on the market in 2014.

Yea I'm not sure why there is so much against Billups here. He isn't a CP3 or Williams, but he will be miles ahead of what we had here this year. He would either be a starter with a solid, young backup coming in after, or strictly as a back-up, low-salary signing behind someone like a Jarret Jack. Carlisle is a strong draw for Billups as well. People forget we had a similar PG that led us to the championship...

No kidding. Billups is like Michael Jordan compared to Mike James or Derek Fisher.

Everybody likes Billups, me included. But what about his health ?

We need a PG who can play big minutes and be ready come playoff time in May 2014.

Last time i checked Billups wanted to retire at some point. (health and motivation issues)

Already have Cuban's comments up from last night's game at the Two Man Game. Brand and Jae's exit interviews are up at the site, as well. DC, OJ, Dirk, Donnie and Rick will be up over the next day or so.

Valid points... If he's injured or retires, then the discussion is obviously moot.

But if he's healthy, then he'd be an excellent option to mentor a younger player like Collison or Calathes (or whoever) in the same role that Mike James "played" this season (the Jason Kidd role). Especially if we can get him on a short-term deal.

Of course, Billups would be something like Plan D or E this summer - we really need a long-term solution at PG.

Or how about mentoring Mayo since he helped send him here to play for Carlisle.

Just let Mayo go away. He is not a smart player. We now know why Memphis let him go. Lots of talent will be available due to the luxury tax. Don't tie up $4 million in OJ.

Chauncey Billups played 22 games this year. He played 20 or more minutes only 9 times. He played 20 games the year before that. If we had him instead of Mike James, then Darren Collison would have been our starting PG.

Glad to hear about Brandon Wright. Id like Brand back as well.

The only reason I want OJ back is because it would keep us from having to look for a SG and efforts can be focused on PG and C.

Hey there, first post. I've got a question that no one has seemed to say anything about.

Rather than trade Marion, is there anyway we could get him to exercise his ETO? If my understanding is correct (which it probably isn't) because we've had Marion for so long, couldn't we get him to use his ETO, free up cap space for this summer, then resign him to a longer, probably slightly smaller contract which could go over the cap?

When it comes to FA, one of the major problems is you can't sign another teams free agent over the cap, but you can your own, plus because we slid under the cap this year the penalties won't be too horrific compared to some (Lakers).

1) Marion is not going to be interested in using his ETO and taking a pay cut.

2) Even if he became a free agent there'd be a large cap hold tied to his Bird Rights and Dallas would gain no practical advantage whatsoever (outside of the pay cut that he would never agree to in the first place).

This new CBA sucks. Just to keep a couple of the guys that contributed to the team (Wright, Mayo)we'd have to take a good chunk of our cap space just to maintain what was a non playoff team.
How the f are you supposed to improve?

Btw we don't need another 40 yo PG.

Per EKS, mavs top two priorities: a PG that can initiate and a defensive C. I won't state the obvious.

I hope that we will get someone like Brandon Jennings. He is not a bad passer and definitely great scorer.Just like Dirk wants.

How about our future C position ,its hard to say something about this case. Here are many of good players but i don't think so that someone of them want to join us

Possibly a subtle implicit endorsement of OJ in that. Though taking anything Donnie says at face value is always an at your own risk thing. It'll be interesting to see what Dallas does in the draft, with a couple point guards and several centers currently projected to go within a few spots of where the Mavs are likely to pick.

How the f are you supposed to improve?

Btw we don't need another 40 yo PG.
Our issue is how much we are paying Dirk really. The idea is that this new CBA will spread the stars more evenly across the league making it more competitive on the whole and making it harder for teams to simply outspend to dominate. For example, LAL is really screwed next year (whether or not they sign Howard, unless they Amnesty Kobe). And this will likely ensure a Heat type of scenario is next to impossible in the future. In other words, 1 star on each team unless you get them in the draft cheap. Dallas is going to have to completely re-evaluate their game plans moving forward and be much more productive in the draft.

That said, Mayo can leave. But we should definitely pay to keep Wright.

This suggestion pertains to coaching. I sort of think Carlisle should really evaluate his coaching staff. Perhaps replace his assistant coach. There are some decent replacements like Byron Scott, Alvin Gentry, Doug Collins, or Avery Johnson. I don't know what to think of the assistant coach we have now (Monte Mathis). He's been here for two seasons already right after Dwayne Casey left.

No thanks. He's a shoot-first PG if not to say a ballhog (I don't care if he had a couple of nights racking up dimes) and a horrific shooter. Moreover, I think he has a big ego and would want to take crunch time shots.

Kelly Olynyk out of Gonzaga has officially entered the draft. 7'0 player who's got nice potential at the power forward position. Possibly an protege for Dirk to learn from and possibly be like him. With the Mavs 12-13th pick. I'd really want them to consider drafting this kid. Molding him into the league. His shooting arc can reach all around half court especially.

I'd be interested in hearing what somebody here who watches a lot of college ball has to say regarding comparisons among the center prospects projected to go somewhere in the late lottery or perhaps shortly thereafter: Plumlee, Olynyk, Dieng, etc. BBall IQ, performance in the pick-and-roll, shooting range, physical/athletic suitability for the center position, NBA-readiness; that sort of thing. What I'd really like to get a sense of is whether any of those guys: a) have red flags indicating bust potential, or b) look like they could come right in and be counted on to be a fixture in an 8-man rotation.

Kelly Olynyk stood out to me during the NCAA tournament... maybe it was his hair.

He's not my favorite choice but depending on how the market settles, I would take a long look at Al Jeff. I would probably prefer him to Bynum.

There is only one Dirk. Kelly Olynyk is pretty damn unlikely to replace him or come close. He doesn't have the shooting touch from 3 like Dirk did and isn't as athletic as Dirk was at that age. That said, I like him a lot and while I doubt he could be a center for several years, I believe he could add some consistency coming off the bench behind Dirk being a similar "type" player.

If he gets his health together Bynum's a far better option, but taking health into account I wouldn't presume to argue that Al might not prove to be the smarter buy. Worth a look, as you say, and would definitely be a step up from Kaman. But at the same time I don't think he'd be near as good a fit as Gortat.

Of course there is only 1 Dirk. But he needs someone under his wing to mentor. That is why I think Olynyk has good hope learning from Dirk. I'd even consider Holger to help training him. If the option of drafting him is still on the table. Dirk says he will be in the draft room with Donnie to help.

Here is a mix of Olynyk. Nice followthrough in his shot.

Dennis Schröder is entering the draft. Highly talented German guard. Worth a look?
Maybe someone who follows German basketball can share how good he is?

Looks smooth and has range.

I like him. He looks like an exciting player to watch, even if he has a lot to improve. But then, we have seen how Roddy has struggled to become better after wowing everyone as a rookie.
