I love it. Nerlens Noel really has me sold that he likes being here in Dallas. It reminds me almost how JET was when he came to Dallas. Noel will be here for the longterm. I'm calling it.

It's as if the Mavs just drafted a number 1 pick. He definitely needs to stay 5 years or more.

It's interesting reading Sixer forums about the trade and how the reality is that most teams weren't going to give up major assets to pay Noel 20 mil a season this summer. One fan listed basically every team and how center is really isn't a need for most of them. And the fact is that Dallas could use that leverage against Philly warning them that they were going to make Noel a huge offer this summer which they weren't going to match...thus losing Noel for nothing.

The obvious conclusion is that there wasn't much of a market for him mainly because teams weren't going to pay him.

This move has put us a year ahead of schedule in the rebuilding process. In fact the acquisitions of Barnes, Curry and Noel put us at least 3 years ahead as far as I'm concerned.
Add to the fact that DFS and Yogi will most likely be key role players and we will most likely have our draft pick along with Dirk, JJ and Wes, I'd say being back in the PO mix next season isn't a lofty expectation.

A lot of that will hinge on our PG situation next season though.

I'm super optimistic that Nerlens will flourish in a stable organization surrounded by quality vets. Loving him so far!

@espn_macmahon: Mark Cuban describes the Nerlens Noel deal as the first trade the Mavs have made under his watch geared toward the post-Dirk future. Cuban says the Mavs "absolutely, positively" plan to re-sign Noel as a restricted free agent this summer.

I'd be a little surprised if any team makes an offer for him. We clearly traded for him with intentions of locking him up long term. Any team that puts in an offer has to know we will match.

Well, wouldnt be surprised if a team throws a max offer at him knowing we match just to screw with our cap space. RFA matching period is reduced to three days.

Assertion: we won't lose a single game with Noel

Evidence for: last two games

Evidence against: none currently exists

@EarlKSneed: Rick Carlisle says one of the top priorities this summer is re-signing Nerlens Noel.

@EarlKSneed: Nerlens Noel: "I love Dallas. In my short time here, I really enjoyed it."

@EarlKSneed: Nerlens Noel: "I think this is a big offseason for me. I'll be looking to spend a lot of time with coach Carlisle."

I like what I hear. It would be nice if he realizes the great organization he is in now and signs for a little less than the max to help out the team. I doubt it will happen, but one can still hope.

But the catch is, anyone who offers max has to pay max if we balk... Remember Chandler Parsons?

Which is probably why we limited Noel's minutes this season.

Also, there's a very outside chance that he turns down a max contract for less than max if he truly loves this organization. If he has faith that he could develop into an All-Star under Carlisle, it could mean a lot more earnings over the course of his career... But obviously his agent is going to steer him in the direction of the biggest contract he can get NOW.

Got no issues with Noel. Think he can be a center piece in our organization. That said.... he has "max" player mentality written all over him. I would be blown away if he didn't choose the money > situation if it presented itself.

Yeah, that's pretty much the case with every pro athelete.

Dan Fegan is going to try something after LeAndra? I think Noel will be receiving max offers without even speaking to anyone. What other decent center is there to go after?

Don't forget that Noel is a restricted free agent this summer -- the Mavs have the right to match any deal that another team offers... So the biggest motivation anyone has to offer him max is to force us to match, but that puts the other team in cap limbo for a week while all the other FAs are snatched up... Remember how screwed the Mavs would have been if Houston matched on Parsons?

Also, this year's cap was projected to be $108m last summer when teams were throwing big money around, but now it's only $101m -- that eliminates almost 1/3 of the league from even being able to offer max deals this summer.

So basically, any team that offers max to Noel has to view him as their #1 priority... And even then, their chances of landing him are slim-to-none. That might give us a little wiggle room to offer him a couple million less than max.

This exactly. Teams know we are going to match any deal offered, so do they really want to tie up their cap space knowing he isn't going anywhere? I don't expect Noel to take any less than the max, but knowing what it's like to play for a shit organization (Philly) maybe he realizes how lucky he is to be playing with a winning culture and wants to help for the good of the team.

But obviously his agent is going to steer him in the direction of the biggest contract he can get NOW.
There is zero reason for him to turn down anything less than the max he can get. When Dirk has taken less money, it was at the end of his career after already earning hundreds of millions of dollars and for a guy that honestly had all the money he ever wanted as shown by the number of commercial endorsements he took.

Noel is coming off his rookie contract after 2 1/2 years of bad team / injuries. This is his first "set for the rest of your life" contract where honestly, it would be stupid for him to take anything less than the max.

Like most fans, I've always wanted players to take less money to show their willingness to sacrifice, but I have no issues at all when any player goes to any situation purely for financial reasons. I'm pretty sure that I've never gone up to my boss and said, "I'll take a pay reduction for the good of the company." If I did, my wife would beat me silly and check me into a mental hospital.

Yes, its his first big contract, he had injury issues. Im not mad if he is going for the maximum amount. Its something different with the first contract.
Tyson as example had almost 100m in the bank but always went for max money again.

I wouldn't blame Noel for taking the max, but really what can you do with $96 mil that you can't do with $80 mil?

There's no reason for him to turn down max money to take a discount.. But I think there's a very real chance that he's not offered max money mainly due to the decrease from 108m to 101m for the cap as Underdog has pointed out. It'll be interesting. Other teams have to know that the Mavs will match..so why match? To force the Mavs to match? Honestly, the Mavs aren't on anyone's radar enough at the moment for a team to match just for the sake of driving up his price.

I can think of at least 16 very wonderful things.
And using the Rule of 72, that 16 mil could turn into $32mil by the time he is 32, $64mil by the time he's 40 and $128mil by the time he's an old fart like me at the age of 50....assuming an 8% yield.

I'm glad SOMEONE read my second post... Yeah, I don't think Noel will turn down max, but it might ultimately be because nobody offers it to him.

Exactly. I really doubt any team makes an offer knowing we might match unless it's later in FA and some crap team is desperate.

Except not really. Depends on people being available for that cash and often there isn't. Also isn't per year-- that's over a multiple so 4-5 mill? Not much you can do with that other than maybe an aging vet. Also we hit the salary floor. Gotta spend money.

I think the mentality that every dollar counted is a hold-over from the delusional Cuban era when he thought if he had the cap space, free agents would flock to us. It's relatively rare to get quality talent (at least star talent) via free agency.

I think he means from Noel's point of view tbh
