A) were not mentioned for good reason
B) gay is a terrible fit. Other than age, Marion is way more the player we need. We don't need another inefficient ball hog taking it away from dirk. Carter, collison, et al are enough.
C) financially, that is a disaster. Forget free agency- Gay would be it. He's going to earn $16,460,532 this year and $17,888,932/$19,317,326 the next two. You content with dirk, gay and scrubs? Star center or PG in the offseason? How?

We'd be even worse defensively if that is even possible. Mavs need defenders and rebounders in the worst of ways. No way you trade Marion for that terrible contract.

Gay is even more a 'max but not really a franchise'-type of player. No thx.

I always get Gay and Joe Johnson mixed up. Since their basically the same player....Gay has talent, but not the fire to dominate. Been that way since he was at UCONN...

we will not get a franchise player in offseason!! When will you get that???
Why should we NOT get a 3rd star player? look at Brooklyn, LA, Miami....they did it...

I'm not sure you understand how the CBA works. When Dirk earns 20mill and Gay earning 18mill, we simply can't afford to have three stars. Gay would be our second and we'd be filling in the rest of the roster with cheap players.
Depending on who we traded, we'd have between 3 and 12 million for 5-7 more players.
And I assume we'd also have to trade a couple of first rounders, so we couldn't even fill our roster with draft picks, either.
Dirk and Gay is an improvement, but Dirk/Gay going forward for the next few years also isn't a championship team and that is what we'd be stuck with-- Dirk, Gay and some younger players.

Agreed. If we traded for Gay, which I wouldn't be ecstatic about, we'd have to wait until the summer of 2014 to get anything else done via free agency. Then again, next season could very well be another transition year anyway due to Dirk and Marion alone making roughly $32 million.
Re-signing OJ to a reasonable contract next summer and then waiting for Dirk and Marion to do the same in 2014 to give us financial flexibility might be one of the more realistic scenarios at this point. Well, unless someone like CP3 thought it would actually be a good idea to leave money on the table and LA in the process...

[QUOTE=nodir41;1299563]would you do a Gay for Marion Kaman?
[QUOTE]
Why the hell would a four seed do this?
It's time to trade Dirk for Rondo and start over. Cuban's gamble with Tyson blew up in his face. Move on, give Dirk another shot.

Gay is a team cancer. The guy disappears for entire quarters and plays with little to no intensity most of the time. The Grizzlies have regressed with his return to the lineup. I seriously question whether he enjoys the competition in the NBA. No thank you!

Rumors have Suns packaging around Dudley (rejected though, "not enough assets"). Memphis just doesn't want to play tax. Dudley has 13M left (3 yrs) on his contract after this year, Marion 10M (1 yr). Although Dudleys contract is better, you wonder whether the Mavs could be in the conversation with a package around Marion (and Carter).
Still not sold on Gay, but w/o Marion + Carter, Mavs pay 40M for Dirk & Gay in 2013/2014 which would even leave us with enough room for another max.

ok, it seems you are an expert...
explain to me how Miami Did it...they had wade $17,024,000 under contract and signed LBJ $17,545,000 and Bosh $17,545,000
explain to me how the Knicks did it...they had Anthony and Stoudamire 40 Mil. under contract and they signed Chandeler $13,604,188
please share your knowledge

Pretty simple, so I'm not sure I need to explain to you. All those examples were under the previous CBA. The new CBA is much harsher and not only imposes a much more significant tax, but also physically limits teams ability to acquire new players Both teams are going to suffer from the new CBA, but they were at least able to put their team together.
So all the things that have allowed super teams to flourish have all been nerfed.
1) Teams get fined to hell and back for exceeding the tax threshold. Cuban does not have the infinite money of a New York team. (up to a 410% tax for every dollar over the threshold instead of maxing out at 1:1.
2) Teams above the tax threshold only get 3mill in MLE money instead of 5mill. Few players would take a 2mill per year salary cut to come to Dallas.
3) If we get above the tax threshold, we also cannot receive a player in a sign-and-trade, which is how Lebron and Bosh got to Miami and how Chandler got to New York.
4) Cap holds for players were reduced, but still pose a serious problem. We can't just max out our salary and then re-sign our guys. They count against our cap until we relinquish rights to them.
5) We can only give $3mill annually, instead of up to $3mill every transaction. Cuban often did this to sweeten the pot, but now he can only do it once per season.

Also, if Memphis did accept Marion and Kaman for Gay, our books would look like this:
22.7m Dirk
17.9m Gay
3.2m Carter
1.2m Cunningham
0.8m Crowder
7.25m hold for Dahntay(can be waived if we give up rights to him)
5.8mi hold for Collison(can be waived if we give up rights to him)
1.5mill hold for Wright(can be waived if we give up rights to him)
8.25m hold for Roddy (can be waived if we give up rights to him)
3.25m hold for DoJo (can be waived if we give up rights to him)
Or
3.2m 8x holds until we get to the minimum 13 players.
------------
49mill/60mill
That is 49mill if we give up all rights to re-sign Collison, Wright, Dahntay, Roddy, and DoJo which will mean approximately 11mill in cap space: nowhere near enough to sign a max FA contract.
If we want to keep even a couple of guys, or reserve our rights to a couple of guys, the number gets even smaller, because you replace the min player salary (400k) with the regular hold which is always higher, as shown above. So if we want to keep rights to Dahntay, we'd have abotu 3-4mill in cap space. If he re-signed for less, then you could add that to the cap space after signing him, but we still have a max of 11mill available this summer.
So....with a max of 11mill this summer, which superstar could we land? And even if we did, we'd have to waive everyone which would leave us with
Dirk
Gay
11mill-"superstar"
3-5mill MLE player
3.2m Carter
1.2m Cunningham
0.8m Crowder
...and only minimum contracts to fill out the rest of the roster (6 players at the min). Would that team compete? That's even conceding that we could get a game changer for 11mill. Would that team be any good?

Rudy Gay is the worst max contract player in the league. I wouldn't give Memphis a trade exception for him.

Good question. If he's here, he comes out of our cap, but he doesn't have an enormous hold because he has no bird rights. So, yeah-- those cap numbers assume he either walks or eats more of the cap

Sounds like Mem-Tor might be looking for a 3rd team for Calderon. Do we have any kind of package either might be interested in?

You mean a third team to take Calderon? I have to think Memphis would feel pretty good about clearing Rudy's salary and having someone like Marion take his minutes. Not sure whether or how that'd fit into the broader context of a throwback Canadia three-way, though.

Jones/Jones/Roddy/Cunningham for Calderon works salarywise
I highly doubt the Mavs wanna include Carter, Marion or Kaman...

Barea, Chandler, Williams, Howard, Now Gay/ Calderon
To keep a long story short we should have never let Barea and Chandler leave! We have lacked defense and rebounds ever since chandler left! and bareas penetration and 3's. When you win a championship you dont tear the team apart! WORST roster moves I have ever seen! All for a chance to get a super star that we will never get! They should of at least taken a stab on Gay and Calderon! If we had them two we would be damn good! I wish someone in Dallas would open there eyes and get us some good players before Dirk decides enough is enough and goes to NY like everyone else!!!
