Flip Murray makes some kind of sense - he can back up both the 1 & 2...

Cassell--Barry--Flip Murray.

In that order. Any of them will help.

Cassell definitely would help the most. It is unbelievable how horrible we play when Kidd leaves the game. We have an unbelievable drop-off when JJB or George man the point guard/point forward position.

Cassell is also a clutch shooter and you can always use that. We don't necessarily need a 3-pt specialist when Kidd is leaving guys with WIDE OPEN 3s. WIDE OPEN 3s can be hit by just about any pro at a 30-35% clip. Good shooters will be seeing mid to high 40s.

How about Chris Duhon as backup point guard:
Quote:
Duhon Finished In Chicago?
February 27, 2008 - 5:04 am

Chicago Tribune - Chris Duhon may be the odd man out in the Bulls' suddenly crowded backcourt, K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune is reporting.

"There are times teams want to go in another direction or have guys who they expect to play a lot next year," Duhon said after practice on Tuesday. "If my time does come again this season, that's great. If not, I can't let that affect the player I am."

"Right now I just have to be a good teammate and, whenever this season is over, see what my options are."

Link
I think he would be a nice addition as backup point guard and is still young enough to play after Kidd is finished. A trade of Juwan Howard and Eddie Jones for Chris Duhon would work via RealGm Trade Checker: Trade ID #4539199

Even if I don´t know, why Chicago should do this...

I'm okay with this, but I doubt they cut Juwan Howard. I think they might just sign Justin Williams and go to war.

I hear a lot of concerns being voiced about backup PG, and to me it was one of the chief weaknesses on the team when Devin Harris was the starter. Now that Kidd is here, he's going to play 40 mpg in the playoffs. Believe that. So you need 8 minutes behind him. I think Terry can fill that role as well or better than anybody mentioned except perhaps Cassell, and I don't think he's coming here to play 8 mpg in the playoffs.

Just say no to Williams.

Juwan is 10 times the player that Williams is because of his experience and I'm not really sure when Williams would help us. Next 2-3 years Howard will be better-- in 3 years we will probably be rebuilding.

Williams is pure energy off the bench and is just as good on the defensive end as Bass is on the offensive end. Raw but talented.

I would like to see us pick him up.

Gordon Giricek might get bought out... could another option for the last roster spot. He would have to get released this week in order to remain eligible for the playoffs.

so we have the most to offer cassell? Hopefully it's enough to keep him away from his pal KG. I don't want to see JJB getting important playoff minutes.

Cassell is probably not longer available:
Quote:
Has Cassell Buyout Hit Snag?
February 27, 2008 - 9:46 am

The Boston Globe - An NBA source told the Boston Globe on Tuesday night that the buyout talks between the Clippers and Sam Cassell have hit a snag.

Los Angeles' owner Donald Sterling doesn't seem interested in buying out the contract of Cassell, whose agent has given the Clippers a deadline of Saturday to complete the negotiations.

Cassell buyout hits snag
By Marc J. Spears
Globe Staff / February 27, 2008

An NBA source said yesterday that Clippers owner Donald Sterling does not seem interested in buying out the final year of guard Sam Cassell's contract. Cassell's agent, David Falk, has given the Clippers a deadline of Saturday to complete the buyout so the 6-foot-3-inch, two-time NBA champion would be eligible for another team's postseason roster. Cassell is being paid $6.1 million this season, and is believed to be owed about one-third of that total.

The NBA source said the Celtics and possibly the Nuggets, both over the salary cap, would be interested in Cassell if he is bought out prior to Saturday's deadline. Both teams could only offer a prorated amount of the veteran's minimum, around $1.2 million. Falk didn't respond to an e-mail yesterday and couldn't be reached by phone.

Cassell, 38, is averaging 12.8 points and 4.7 assists this season. He has said he would have no problem backing up starting point guard Rajon Rondo if he came to Boston. Celtics general manager Danny Ainge has said he is interested in finding the "right veteran point guard."

Another NBA source said free agent guard Brent Barry, who cleared waivers yesterday, is still considering Boston. Barry also is considering the Spurs, but he can't re-sign with his former team for another three weeks. The Celtics are also believed to be interested in free agent guard Flip Murray, who cleared waivers yesterday.

Chris Duhon would be the ideal back up PG for the Mavs. Although it is not mentioned, I guess he could be a candidate to bought out. If so, Mavs would be wise to take a look. Otherwis,e he will be available in the offseason.

I think Cassell and Flip have to be the primary targets at this point. Getting a backup big man was huge for this team. And I actually like Malik Allen a lot more than Bass, and wish he'd take most of the "animals" minutes.

But whenever Kidd and Dirk taken out of the game, it's painful to watch. I mean, it's so much fun watching Devean George stand there like a moron at the top of the key. Then with 8 seconds left on the clock the Mavs run an isolation play which ends up being a wild shot leading into fast break points for the opposition.

I love this mini-free agency period. So many options and we actually have a better chance to land some interesting pieces because fewer teams are looking to retool at this time. This is a great time for the Mavs to take a look at different players.

If we didn't have both Terry and Stackhouse, Giricek would be a solid pick up because he is a starting caliber SG. But he is already 30, plays even less defense than Terry, and his shot selection is Stackesque. Maybe Kidd would have an influence on him so that he would get into the ball movement side of things, I don't know.

I am looking to the future as well as the next 3 months and think it would be wise for the Mavs to start taking a close up look at some younger players, even if it just a few minutes in the limited practices. I hope to see them break this addiction of adding older veterans who really do not contribute. Like to see a few younger ones with some upside even they don't contribute right away.

I think Cassell has to be our top option, as always with every team Kidd plays on, the 2nd unit is horrid. I'd sign up Cassell, then maybe go after Duhon in the offseason.

Sterling's trying to get a better buyout, which would actually help us if money does become an issue, we can help him recoup a bit of the buyout difference from salary.

I also hope we will get Cassell, since getting a backup point guard should be our first priority in my opinion. I would like Duhon better because he is a good defender and has about the same assist average as Cassell, so he would be a great pick up if the Bulls buy him out. If not he is definitely worth a look in the offseason.

I REALLY like the idea of adding Giricek. He's a 6'6" 220 lb. guard who can step out and hit the three or drive to the basket. He is a career 37% 3-point shooter and has been shooting between 33% and 35% this season.

He would be a solid pick-up and add some size and perimeter shooting to our back-court.

I agree with this. Cassell would be a terrific option at backup PG. His defense is obviously suspect, but his experience, passing and scoring abilities would be very valuable. The pick & pop with him and Dirk would be almost unstoppable!!

I thought the highlighted part was funny..

Quote:
As of late Monday, all signs pointed to the addition being veteran point guard Sam Cassell, who was working on a buyout of his contract with the Clippers and was prepared to sign with the Celtics. "Who? Never heard of him," cracked Doc Rivers. That was before Monday night's 104-76 win over the Clippers (in which Cassell didn't play because of a sore right wrist). By the end of the week, Rivers not only might be able to publicly identify Cassell, but also coach him. But for that to happen, the Clippers have to agree to the buyout. As of Monday night, the consensus was that the divorce was all but finished (although owner Donald Sterling said he had no knowledge of it, nor did he understand how it worked).

Duhon would be a great pick-up but I'm not sure a guy like him would want to serve back-up duty. Maybe he would but I could just see him trying to find a starting role this off-season.

With that said, perhaps playing with Kidd could really boost his career, also. He's only 26.

He's been a backup almost his whole career so far with the Bulls so I don't think he has too much of a choice.

Yeah but c'mon, he's been stuck behind Hinrich whom Chicago has been grooming for quite a while.

As far as Cassell goes both he and the owner of the Clippers are penny pinchers and don't want to give up a dime (on top of the owner apparently not even knowing how a buyout works) So I think Cassell could end up playing for the Clippers.

But it seems the best scenario for him if the owner refuses to budge may be to play for us, we have the mid-level exception so he wouldn't be losing much (he's owed $6 mil from the Clippers)
