Finally, the Mavs make a big splash in free agency!

Now have to look to see if the Over-36 rule makes an impact on why the deal was structured this way...

No, we really don't have to. We could just say that it was time for Kidd to be gone and be a bit disappointed that he's back in a Mavs uniform.

Oh, well. I have posted this in another thread, but I'm so happy, just had to type this twice:
Why not four years for J-Kidd? Because that would be, you know, one year more! And more is always better. "Swing for the fences" type of move. Bravo.

And I don't want to read anything about a "over 36 rule". I just don't.

Seems like a fair price to pay for him. I'm sure he'll average 25+ minutes per game. If only Dallas got that kind of value at their Center position.

If we're not going to make a huge splash, I'm glad we at least will have some stability. I hope we're able to sign Sessions so Kidd can be part of a platoon as opposed to carrying the load on his own.

But I'm guessing it would be our super Grandpa-Chip for 2015 Free Agency and would totally net (haha) us LeBron, Deron Williams and Kevin Durant all at once.

Seriously though, Kidd should not and must not play more than 20 mpg next year. And that's 20 mpg before you factor in sitting out back to backs.

Right player for the right price. I hope this doesn't give the FO the impression they'll be able to build a competitive roster this way.

Only applies to contracts of 4+ years.

Couple things to remember:
1. We have to see how the contract is structured, and what is guranteed.
2. With such a low per year amount, the stretch provision can be used to lower the cap hit to a point that it's almost meaningless.
I'm not a huge fan of this, but it's very unlikely to be a huge negative.

Wasn't sure the specifics of the rule, just remembered it in a haze. Everything below is pretty much 2 legit to 2 quit

Kidd is a great backup and player coach and even last year we saw how terrible this team was without him. Unfortunately, he is on the decline but as long as we can swing a young guy to start, he'd be a great asset particularly for the price.
Plus, if even one year is team option and we want to dump him next year, then we could spread that 3mill over 2-3 years, meaning his cap hit would be almost negligible.

Getting Kidd at 3/9 isn't bad, but it would have been a lot better if he was playing behind Deron/Nash/Dragic/Lin - now we're looking at Sessions? Seems like the "starter" role isn't going to be so clearly defined this season... I hope that third year is a team option (or every year, similar to Carter's deal...)

LOL. I hope the Knicks signed him for 3 years too.
This is hilarious. This is the one bit of good news so far in the offseason. The Mavs won't have a 40 year old PG next year.
