Default AI retires

Quote:
By: yahoo
Without a clear-cut suitor emerging to sign him, All-Star guard Allen Iverson(notes) is set to retire, his personal manager said Wednesday afternoon.

Iverson, who has played 14 seasons in the NBA, thought he was close to signing with the New York Knicks last week only to be told team officials had a change of heart.

“Wonderful career. Right thing to do for his family,” said Gary Moore, Iverson’s manager. “It’s no secret that Allen has been unfairly treated through all this. The fact is his family needs him more.”

Moore said Iverson plans to formally announce his retirement soon. The question: Will he stay retired?

League sources insist Iverson, at least for now, will still listen if a team is interested in signing him.

Iverson signed a one-year, $3 million contract to play for the Memphis Grizzlies this season, but played just three games and complained about his role off the bench. The Grizzlies granted him a leave of absence to attend to some personal matters, but two sides eventually reached agreement to part ways and Iverson was waived.

Moore said Iverson is proceeding as if he won’t play again. Iverson had his greatest success in Philadelphia, where he took the Sixers to the NBA Finals in 2001 and was named MVP.

“The years in Philly were unforgettable,” Moore said. “He will never forget the crowd. …He’ll retire always being known as a Sixer.”

True. Nellie spends way more than that just in lawyer's fees.

The hate for A.I. is pretty ridiculous I think. Until very recently he was a truly phenomenal player. I'm sad to see his career end this way.

But he's the reason that it's ending this way. So I don't find it sad, I find it a statement about his career as a whole. Selfish until the end.

Ive never thought iversons game was that greatand I think you are overrating him as a player. However I have always found him to be extremely interesting both as a player and as a person and I actually like him quite a bit. Hes one of the toughest players ive ever seen. He takes a pounding and keeps on coming at roughly 6 ft 160. Hes taken care of a ton of people in his personal life with his success. I think hes been as true to himself as just about any athlete in recent memory. The issue i have is that i fundamentally disagree with the way he plays basketball. He wastes a ton of possessions and for a guy whos value is primarily generated through offense, thats not something you can get away with. I hate to see it end this way for him but as jthig said, its his own fault.

It's not always a good thing to be true to yourself... I guess he was just keeping it real. Hey, if he's a selfish idiot off the court, I suppose it's fine to be yourself and be a selfish idiot on the court. Personally, I never remotely cared for the guy. The NBA is a better place without him on the court.

My guess is that he's doing just fine for himself, regardless how well the NBA is doing or not doing.

He was an outstanding player.

But he self killed his greatness with his incredible braindead scoring...

Scoring titles with 40% and below, who need that? Another thing was his absolutly inability to adjust. Specially at the end of his career...

Why? because AI is a selfish douche that always put himself before the team? I don't think anyone would argue that he wasn't a very, very good player.. But, he also represents so much of what is wrong with the game at the NBA level.

Man, it was kinda tough seeing A.I cry, I mean he's made some mistakes but generally he's a good guy. He needs to try his best to score but at the same time still keep the team involved, that should be his goal. I wish him nothing but luck in his home return.

He's not "generally a good guy". He's a selfish douchebag that doesn't give two sh!ts about teammates, defense, winning, etc. He wants to start and dominate the ball.

He manifests everything wrong with the game.

He plays as hard as anyone in the league on a night in night out basis. That alone should exempt him from the "everything that's wrong with the game" tag. He's tough, if he can walk he usually playes and for a guy that doesn't care about winning he's done quite a bit of it in his career.

Obviously he hasn't aged gracefully but a lot of the criticism is going overboard.

Obviously he hasn't aged gracefully but a lot of the criticism is going overboard.
I think the problem is that Iverson could have been one of the best players to ever play the game if he had just figured out what it took to play team ball. And even though there have been some talented knuckleheads that had this problem earlier in their career, most figured it out some point. The frustrating thing is that Iverson just never has. Even worse, he's got a bit of a persecution complex about it.

The thing that makes it most tragic of all is just as you mentioned, the guy tried hard every time he was on the court. He seemed to say the right things off the court as he matured. But for some reason he never matured on the court.

One of the worst attitudes I have ever seen from a professional athlete in all realms of sports. Although it still irks me, I have accepted that attitude from stars, not former stars. I think the worst part is he isn't even concerned about getting a ring, he just wants to start. I figured perhaps a trade to a contender might change that, but it's looking less and less probable.

I'm not buying into this "he tries hard" crap. He has a horrible work ethic. Compare his opinion of practice to that of Dirk Nowitzki.
