JJB starter kit? The dude is 6'4", averaged 14pts, 8ast, 5reb per 40.
I'm not sure what the comparison is other than they are both fierce, lack a reliable jumper, and were undrafted.
DoJo is the better comparison. POor man's Dojo is yet to be seen.

If we signed this guy, then I like it in the sense that he'd essentially be our draft pick if it is traded away.

Sounds like he can play, and if we worked him out for two days we must have a lot of interest. Any of these low-risk, cheap acquisitions that have potential are positive steps.

I'll take him.
I still want Calathes here...
Edit: Seems like the Mavs don't think as highly of Calathes, and they have been the ones watching him - not me. I would expect Calathes to be moved somewhere else now that Mekel is signed.

Stein now reporting that Mavs have a verbal commitment from this dude. Multi-year deal at the minimum.
Between 5'10" Larkin, 6'4" Mekel and 6'6" Calathes, a lot of versatile size at the point and absolutely no NBA experience.

Indeed, Stein indicated this. Well, I suppose that's a tradeable asset, at least.

I love the idea of an experienced young pg with lots of overseas pro experience. Being MVP on a championship squad is nice experience under pressure

Agent Porter confirms Mavs' deal with Mekel
link
Sam Porter, agent for Israeli point guard Gal Mekel, has confirmed to ESPN.com that Mekel intends to sign a contract with the Mavericks later this month.
ESPN.com reported earlier Monday that Mekel has given a verbal commitment to the Mavs that he'll be signing a three-year guaranteed deal at the league minimum later this month after the NBA's annual moratorium on signings and trades is lifted July 10.
Teams cannot formally sign players until the moratorium is lifted but can come to verbal agreements on deals with free agents. Because Mekel's deal is for the rookie minimum salary, Dallas has the ability to commit to him without affecting the salary-cap space it has set aside for its pursuit of Dwight Howard.
Mekel joins first-round pick Shane Larkin in an evolving Mavs backcourt renovation that will ultimately have a new starter as well in light of Darren Collison's expected departure via unrestricted free agency. Mekel and Larkin are not considered contenders to start but potentially give Dallas two guards proficient in pick-and-rolls -- which obviously meshes with Dirk Nowitzki's game -- after last season's issues at point guard until the late-season arrival of veteran Mike James to steady things.
Mekel is expected to arrive in Dallas within the next week or so to start preparations for the Mavericks' summer-league team that will play in Las Vegas.

Looks like he won't affect our cap situation until after the dust settles...

Also, as is my understanding, since it's at the minimum salary it doesn't affect our cap either way since its the equivalent of (and substituting) a cap hold.

hello friends, im a Dallas fan from israel.
rumours in israel are sayin Gal signed on a 3 year contract...
seems like a pretty good desicion of the team,
couple of words about him - now days he count as the best israeli PG, he is very young and talented and last season he lead his team Haifa to win the championship on the european giants Maccabi Tel-Aviv, almost by himself, winning the season MVP and the final game MVP.
i know probably people understmite the level of the israeli league, but gal played in the highest lvls of europe, and taking a championship from a team like Maccabi Tel-Aviv which is in the top 5 teams in europe every year, is amazing achievement.
i think he will be a great success in Dallad, and by the way, you guys should notice the close EuroBasket 2013 in Slovenia this September, he is expected to be Israel NT leading PG in this championship trying to lead us to the world championship next summer.

Season highlights. First impressions, good size, laterally quick, with good coordination, but an average athlete as far as length, and explosion goes, also very limited vertically, but that's probably not that important for a PG. What's worrying, he's not a great shooter, he is an average shooter.
Made 32% of his 3's last season, and only shot 77% from the line. His release is also super slow. Can finish around the rim with either hand though, and can make floaters, he shot 52% on 2 pointers. Smart player, good passer, could be a decent backup PG, definitely don't look like starter material, but of course we suspected that.

Well, whether he should be or not doesn't really matter. He may have to be if the Mavs can't field a starter this offseason. Mike James last year started because no one else was capable.

The quickness of his release is easily correctable though. He has good shooting motion, that is harder to fix than speeding up your shot.

We used to have that one PG that needed to really set his feet before taking a shot, but he seemed to turn out okay. Maybe Mekel will even be able to keep his big toes off the line!

Forgive me if I don't think comparisons to one of the greatest PGs of all time is applicable at this point.

I just want better defense from the PG along with the capability to run the offense. Slow release can be fixed but I think his ability in the pick and roll game, along with his ability to finish around the rim, will be more important to his game than shooting.
