Sb nation mock has us taking Mark Williams from Duke at 25 - Yes please!!!

"Mark Williams, C, Duke: Williams is a 7-foot center with an enormous 7’7 wingspan who was a vital part of Duke’s march to the Final Four. Williams projects as a lob threat on offense and rim protector on defense who knows how to leverage his length to impact the game. While Williams fell a bit since our pre-tournament mock, it feels like he’s put himself ahead of his peers in a similar archetype like Walker Kessler and Christian Koloko."

Dude will likely fall due to the fact that he's a bit slow and he has no range on the jumper (or jumper at all), but if we want a five-out we can play Kleber (if his jumper ever comes back) or Bertans.

Otherwise, we need length (check), athleticism (check), rebounding (check), defense (check), shot-blocking (check), screens (check) and hustle (check) from our center position.

I still don't think he drops to 24, but if he does, I'd be over the moon

Exactly.
I could see Mark Williams immediately filling the WCS role.
We’d be damn near a complete team if WCS would have lived up to what was expected imo.

NBAdraftnet is so bad that they don't even have Koloko listed on their latest mock.

Love to know what idiots run that site.

I think the best draft sites have ever done is like 10% accuracy

Nbadraft.net is at like 1%

So, I'm an Arkansas fan and keep seeing rumors Jaylin Williams might be sneaking into the late first round. I don't see if and see him coming back for one more year. However, he could be in play depending on workouts. He's an excellent screener, rebounder, and can play a little bit point on break, though I'd imagine that would be much more limited in the NBA. The things he needs to improve on are his shooting (needs to be more consistent and I think he can develop into a 35% 3 point shooter) and getting more verticality in his defense, as right now he relies heavily on his ability to take charges. Two things there, he can't continue to take the beating and the additional quickness that would take in the NBA would likely lead him to foul trouble.

Someone to keep an eye on. He's got some work to do, but I think he can add a respectable 3 point game given the looks he gets as well as blossom into a real shot blocker once the charges are waned. But those are much easier worked on in college and he would have huge minutes to show out, so I think he returns. He also did not hire an agent.

Is there a good source that tracks what straight from high school kids have done in the G league, Overtime Elite, or overseas? There's got to be some real draft able upside there that might be overlooked.

Does seem like Ismael Kamagate is rising a bit. He is more of a project though but he does have that upside if a team is patient. I'd rather go with give me production now types of players, but I wouldn't hate it.

I feel like we can afford to draft a center without freaking out over other prospects. There are some nice wings and forwards, but man do we need a big man in the middle.

I agree we need a legit sized center, and hope we draft Williams, but there should be some cheap options in FA that could fill the WCS void.
Whiteside, Howard, R. Lopez, C. Zeller, Biyombo, and some others that could give Kidd another option.

I think Powell is our starter for God knows how long, and we just need an option against teams that have big centers that will give our rotation bigs problems.

If there is a wing or solid PF that has a ton of upside when we pick, I can see us going that route and sign one of those FA centers mentioned above.

How we fair in the POs in the paint could dictate how we draft.

I wonder if Howard would have any interest with the Kidd and Dudley connection

Armando Bacot is returning to UNC. His choice and all, but man I don't see how he can show any improvement next year unless he comes out of nowhere with a 3 point shot. Oh well, another big option that could have been...

SI's latest mock - has us taking marjon beauchamp
koloko goes end of 1st round if we're still interested in a big
Oscar not on the mock as there's a strong likelihood he returns to school

I have really talked myself into Isaiah Hartenstein this offseason. I think he fits what the Mavs are doing extremely well. I would pursue him hard and go BPA with the pick, or package the pick to shed THJ/ Bertans.

Damn.

Oscar Tshiebwe is coming back.

That’s right, the Kentucky center is returning for the 2022-23 season. Only this isn’t just the UK center we’re talking about. This is the unanimous national player of the year, the 22-year-old dynamo from the Congo who produced a historic campaign, leading the Cats in scoring (17.4 points per game) and the nation in rebounding (15.1 boards per game).

Yeah saw this was likely… he’s not mocked to the first round.
Maybe good for him but he’ll be old coming out

I actually think it's gonna hurt him because of his age, but someone might take a flyer in the second round of the next draft.

yeah not sure - i guess he's hoping that another year of development and such at the college level will improve his draft stock? i mean from late first/early 2nd round to maybe mid first round - is it worth it? And what if he gets hurt? And he'll be 23 when he comes out.

i mean why not just enter the draft and someone will for sure draft him, even if it's in the 2nd round. He could just as easily work on his game with professional coaches and trainers.

there's going to be a bunch of 19-20 year olds that are going to be taken ahead of him. Even if he dominates again at the college level, does he think he'll go top 5?

It's pretty much unheard of to draft a 23 year old in the first round unless it's a game changing player which he isn't.

But man would his rebounding be needed on this team. Oh well. Next...

He'll be a plug and play rotation player (rebounding and length) from the 2nd round next year unless he just goes nutso next year and starts shooting threes at a decent percentage and clip. I think he can be a Steven Adams type and is limited to that, and should make the jump. But I'm sure there are many other factors.

regardless of the outcome of this series, it's pretty clear that the limitations of a player like Gobert are just not going to make up for his defensive prowess. At least not on their team.

Would the mavs be better with a non shooting all defense type big? perhaps given the playmaking we currently have and our defensive schemes we can get away with it. but it's making me question that approach.

it will be interesting to see what the Magic do with #1. Holmgren appears to be the consensus top pick, but the Magic already have Bamba and Carter.

I mean a lot of people think that Holmgren is a point-forward like Walker. He's 7'0" but he can play next to a center.

Ringer has us taking 6'7" Jalen Williams

Not a bad 3/D guy at 6'7" who has some experience as a 21-year-old Junior.

Could replace Bullock in a few years.

I won’t admit to know a ton about prospects, but Jabari Smith seems like a solid option to go #1 overall. Maybe Orlando makes some of their bigs available? Curious if they would sell low on Isaac with his injury history.

I’d go Jabari Smith too. Hard worker, nba pedigree, plays defense, great shooter, still improving. I can see going Chet if you think he is switchable on the perimeter. And Banchero is a good playmaker. Just something underwhelming about him to me.

I am finding E.J. Liddell intriguing. He reminds me of Draymond Green but without the incessant chattering. Looks to be a better shot blocker than Green, but not as good passing the ball. Tankathon has him going to the Mavs.

Incase anyone didn’t know the Mavs have the 26th pick.

Also, did anyone see Dame Lillard face drop when Portland landed the 7th pick? Dude has to know he’s never going to win shit in Portland. They won 2 games after the all star break (2!!), and still look like they fell just far enough to miss on the few top end prospects. Curious how long before he asks for a trade. Does Portland offer a max deal to someone like Ayton?

I think I’m holding out hope that Mark Williams from Duke somehow falls to us. I just want a legit big man to block shots, rebound, and play the PnR.

Don't see Williams dropping. Kessler could drop, but not Williams.

There are a few decent players at our pick that I like. Koloko, Jovic, Liddell. Be happy with any of them.

I definitely don’t expect Williams to drop that far, but a guy can dream.

Jaylin Williams is 6'10" 240 lbs. He can shoot from the 3, has a good face up game, and is a good passer. He looks like he can fit in nicely with the Mavs team. He held his own against bigger centers. He's not much of a shot blocker. He brings a lot of energy. He's a scrapper. He averaged 9.8 rebounds per game. He's more of a power forward who can play center. The Mavs already have Powell and Kleber who do that.

The Mavs need an enforcer. He won't bring this element to the game. Mark Williams won't be available especially after he measured 7'2" at the combine. Walker Kessler might be available. Christian Koloko and Ismael Kamagate should be there at 26.

Kessler would be the best enforcer but just an average rebounder. He led the nation in blocks at 4.6 per game.

There is one sleeper who played outplayed Koloko earlier in the year. He's your typical bruiser down low. He is Kofi Cockburn. He's 7'0" and 285 lbs.

If available, I would select the following in order:

Mark Williams
Walker Kessler
Jaylin Williams
Chrisian Koloko
Kofi Cockburn
Christian Kamagate

What do you think?

I think we end up picking a player for another team as part of a larger trade.

But, if we do, and they don't address this team's rebounding, then it better be because a damn good wing/3&D or secondary ballhandler/scoring type fell and can be justified.

Also, Jaylin Williams apparently had a nice combine. While Powell provides some plus PNR attributes, I think Williams picks up the slack. His outside shooting, or really shooting in general, and his passing abilities would provide more to a team lead by Luka. He screens and rebounds well while also providing enough to body other bigs down low. I think he will struggle initially in the NBA with fouls as he learns to balance taking charges and verticality. His days as a Razorback appear to be nearing an end, which sucks but would be happy to see the kid get drafted in the 1st.

A few mocks have both Jaylin and Koloko going in the second round. Be cool to work some magic to trade back and get both of them if you can. That way you aren't hampered with a 1st round salary commitment if they aren't any good, but you're getting two talented center prospects.

Just going off youtube, I really like Jaylin Williams. He likes to operate at the elbow, and loves pulling that mid range jumper. Not afraid to go at the rim as well. Has a 3 on him as well.

Doesnt seem like he has the dribbling ability we need more of, but hes a big guy for his position.

Sounds good. In a strange twist instead of Jaylin Williams the Mavs redraft Josh Green with the 26th pick.
