Foster to play in Europe
Dallas Mavericks' draft pick Foster to play in Europe
11:19 PM CDT on Thursday, August 7, 2008
By BRANDON GEORGE / The Dallas Morning News
bgeorge@dallasnews.com
Dallas Mavericks' fans will have to wait a while to see 2008 second-round draft pick Shan Foster knocking down 3-pointers at American Airlines Center.
Foster, a 6-6 guard from Vanderbilt, has signed a one-year contract with a team in Europe and will play overseas next season, Mavericks president Donnie Nelson said Thursday in an e-mail.
Nelson, who is in China serving as an assistant coach for China's men's Olympic basketball team, didn't specify the team Foster signed with. The Mavericks still retain Foster's NBA rights.
"This gives him valuable playing experience in one of the top leagues in Europe," Nelson said. "He performed well in summer league but ... this gives him a chance to improve. His future is very bright, and we're excited about him rejoining us next summer. This also gives the Mavs roster flexibility, which may prove valuable in the current free-agent market."
Foster and his agent, Bill Duffy, of BDA Sports Management, couldn't be reached for comment.
"We think it's great for Shan if he does," Mavs owner Mark Cuban said via email, "and I think the more NBA-quality players there are in Europe, the better it is for the entire league."
Foster, who will turn 22 this month, averaged 7.5 points in 11 games for the Mavericks' NBA summer league team. He was only 2-for-11 from 3-point range over his final six games.
Vanderbilt's all-time leading scorer, Foster averaged 20.3 points per game last season and was named the Southeastern Conference player of the year. He was a career 42.1-percent 3-point shooter in college. The Mavericks selected Foster with the 51st overall pick.
Mavericks' 2007 second-round draft picks Reyshawn Terry of North Carolina and Ronnie Seibutis of Lithuania also played on teams overseas last year. They both recently completed stints on the Mavs' summer league team. Seibutis has returned to Europe, and Terry is expected to be in Mavs' camp in October.

I'm a little surprised by this. Although it's obviously bettter to do this than to have him in the DLeague all seasons taking up a spot on the roster.

hmmm....i thought the whole issue of why we didn't buy any draft picks was because we were really happy that we got shan foster or something, and now...he won't even play this year? wtf

Well obviously this story is false, because Donnie can't possibly be working and making decisions while he's in China.
I learned that on d-m.com.

Shan Foster was never in the roster spot in the first place.

Yeah because sending Foster to Europe takes so much effort. It was pretty much either that or the D-league.

Foster going to Europe has no implication on what Donnie is doing (or not doing for that matter)
This required very little if no decision making on the part of Donnie, and even if it did if you think Donnie letting a second round pick leave for Europe is a fine example of how much he can accomplish while in China then that just proves the point that he can't accomplish much while over there. If that's the best he can do then this team is in some serious trouble next season because I don't think we can win a championship as currently composed.

No worries - with all the talk of LeBron & Kobe going to play in Europe, all we have to do is retain Dirk and wait for everyone else to get worse...
Donnie knows what he's doing!

I still have yet to see how the words 'Foster' and 'Championship' are in any way related unless you are talking about Jeff Foster.

Right move imo. I thought we did Ager a big dis-service by keeping him here and yanking him in and out of the d-leage. He desperately needed a lot of playing time and away from the big team.
First most rookies stink, Shan would have probably been the same. The transition is too great even for very good players. Points/bigs sorta seem to handle it better because they are a little more self-contained. Wings have a tough time figuring it out quickly it seems.

Smart move. Now lets see if the Mavs fill the roster spot wisely.

It does seem to escape him anytime a possible trade or free agent acquisition is being discussed.

Guys, don't worry about trades or free agent acquisitions. I'm sure if we inflate the bus tires better, and tie our shoes tighter, we can make up for the talent we could have easily acquired to help us. Yes we can!

Seems given camp, summer league, brass thought it'd be better he go overseas, given the make up of the projected roster. We have quantity at the wing spots, but little depth in the bigs position.
It's just like Seibutis and Rey Terry, we keep his rights.
I think it's a decision based on what they project where Foster was going to be this year, D-League and I"m sure his agent felt he could get more overseas now...and develop and come back in a year or so. I think this opens up a spot for Rhodes....to be on the roster.

The decision made with Foster is a good one.. he can go to Europe and get more playing time and develop into something that Mavs can use later.
The problem is, didn't the Mavs trade for Jason Kidd because they want to win now?
If so, we have to look back at the draft, and with the end result now in front of us, wonder what the hell the management was thinking. We basically took nothing out of the draft to help us in our current season. We could have very easily drafted a big man to back up Dampier (we did not have Diop back at the time), and maybe we could have traded him for Diop or something rather then throw the full MLE at Diop, and then have tried to get James Posey or Artest... without sacrificing Josh Howard at the time.. but now, Josh for Artest straight up would have been a great trade.
