The realistic primary goal is to get rid of his 2.4M and not take on any salary without giving up any other assets. As a bonus, it would be nice to land someone who can contribute this year. As a bonus to the bonus, it would be someone who can jumps right into things and contribute right away. As a bonus to the bonus to the bonus, he would be one of Dirk's best basketball friends.

It was true after all. Odom, schwartz and Cuban met yesterday per Steiny-Mo

The Dallas Mavericks hope to have Lamar Odom back on the active roster in a matter of days, according to sources close to the situation.

While the team was in Memphis Wednesday, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban met in Dallas with Odom and his agent, Jeff Schwartz, to work on a timetable that would ease Odom back after his weeklong personal leave, perhaps as soon as this weekend.

Cuban could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday. But he made it clear before Tuesday's home game against New Jersey that Odom would get as much time as necessary to work through a family matter that prompted management to excuse the 13-year veteran from the team last week.

The Mavericks had Thursday off, but coach Rick Carlisle is expected to update Odom's status later in the day. Neither Odom nor Schwartz could be reached for comment.

Forcefully ruling out growing speculation that Odom was seeking a buyout of his contract, Cuban had insisted Tuesday that he expected Odom to ultimately return to the team, saying Odom is "dealing with issues and like we do with anybody else who's had personal issues, my job is to help him out and not to comment beyond that. He has to clear things out and that's what we're trying to help him do."

Two sources with knowledge of Odom's thinking told ESPN.com earlier this week that -- while the 32-year-old admittedly did briefly ponder retirement during the offseason following the death of a younger cousin -- Odom wants to keep playing despite his season-long struggles.

He left the team before the All-Star break to attend to his ill father in Los Angeles, sources confirmed Monday to ESPNDallas.com.

"We're not going to buy out anybody, there's no reason to do it," Cuban said. "We're not going to do that. That's not the way we work. We try to find what the problem is and fix it."

One source close to the situation told ESPNDallas.com's Jeff Caplan after Wednesday's road loss to the Grizzlies that there is a growing feeling in the locker room that Odom might not return at all.

Yet Carlisle and Cuban continue to express confidence that Odom still can be what the owner refers to as a "huge plus" for the defending champions despite his meager production this far (7.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game).

The reality is that the Mavericks have lost all three games Odom has missed and lack depth at power forward behind Dirk Nowitzki.

The league's reigning Sixth Man of the Year reported to his new team out of shape after a turbulent offseason personally and professionally, culminating with his near-trade from the Los Angeles Lakers to the league-owned Hornets in a deal for Chris Paul that was later canceled by NBA commissioner David Stern, who is acting as the Hornets' lead decision-maker.

Odom had three poor games before leaving the team, which had followed three hopeful ones that had Carlisle suggesting on his weekly radio show on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM that they were as close as they'd been all season to seeing Odom turn the corner.

"It's going to work itself out one way or another," Mavericks guard Jason Kidd said Tuesday of the Odom situation. "We just hope it works itself out soon."

Said Mavs guard Jason Terry: "We've got to go with the players we got. If you're here, you can help us. But our sympathies go out to his family."

Of course it was true. It was apparent since last night once all the rumors started swirling. Hopefully we get this crap taken care of. I truly want him gone now.

Don't be stupid. He really has been through a lot. Enough to mess with anyone. Still, it's better for both sides if they go their separate ways. The experiment obviously failed. Cut our losses and move on.

We need Odom if we want any shot to repeat. Regardless of how bad he has played he is better than any other option we have. Cuban knows this, we stick with him!

It is what it is. It's not like he is costing us a lot, so his upside regardless of form isn't worth cutting him for. Hell he probably wants that then he could go somewhere else right? Back to LA!

Dirk goes down, Odom should have been there for his teammates, he should be ready for his team. He wasn't and the owner was concerned.

We DONT need Odom. Idk why people keep saying this. Would it be great if we had Odom?? YEAS. You know the Odom that actually cares at least somewhat and actually wants to be here like the rest of the team.

WHAT WE NEED is to refocus on the guys that want to be here and build them up for the rest of the year, because obviously all this LO crap is distracting to the team. And honestly I dont think the guys care either at this point about LO because unlike Butler last year Odom hasnt done shit for this team. Butler showed he cared and that he wanted to be here and when he went down they all played for him. They would have done the same for LO, but he didnt care.

I will take Diaw over Odom yesterday.

I really doubt this current team competes with or without Odom. Refocused or not, the core is getting older and the talent level isnt there.

You can whine all you want about Odom's level of play, but he can be nothing but a plus for us going forward. You don't dump him just to dump him.

Addition by subtraction. Mavs don't have room on their roster for guys like this. If it was a matter of talent that's one thing but this is a total lack of effort.

A) you agree that we aren't going far with this roster minus Odom, correct?

B) If he continues to be a slouch, then he gets benched. If he cancers it up, we tell him to stay away from the team. No biggie. In the mean time, I may be a sucker but I think Odom didn't come out to collect a paycheck. He hought of retiring because his life was overwhelming, decided to come back, realized he couldn't keep his head in the game and took some personal time to deal with it.

Within the last 5 years he's had to deal with the death of his infant, the murder of his cousin, the death of a 15-year-old boy due to head trauma right in front of him, a rocky relationship with his father (who abused him and did drugs throughout Odom's youth), reality TV cameras following him around day and night, a trade from the Lakers, a sudden move to Dallas and I'm sure I'm missing something. I think it's reasonable to believe that he was overwhelmed.

I believe Odom has irritated some of the Mavs players based on quotes. I do not, however, believe that he did it because he's a slouch or a cancer.

I think Odom's been a total slouch. He's sulked since the day he signed here, despite giving lip service about Dallas being the only team he wanted to play for. I understand he's a fragile guy, but he's played with fire and energy before. I haven't seen a glint of that here. I think his poor performances are psychological more than they are about understanding his role, or the system, or his shot just not falling.

And if we can get anything for him right now, I think it'd be a coup. But I think he's pretty much not movable at this point unless we want to take on someone else's bad contract.

I get LO has had a lot going on but if he wants to deal with it, and deal with it appropriately for his sake, the best thing for him to do may be to step away from his job for an extended period of time.

Thing is you don't make 9M every year.

Looks like Stein added a bit more info to that article... The re-write (edited an hour ago) is a little more polished:

Quote:
Sources: Mavs, Lamar Odom close

link

The Dallas Mavericks hope to have Lamar Odom back in uniform in a matter of days, but it might not immediately be a Mavs uniform, sources said.

Odom is likely to play at least one game with the Mavericks' D-League affiliate in nearby Frisco to, as one source said, "get his legs back under him." The Texas Legends play the Austin Toros at home Thursday night, but sources said it's more likely Odom practices with the Legends on Friday while the Mavericks are in New Orleans and then plays Saturday's home game with the Legends, also against Austin, while the Mavericks are playing host to Utah.

A team spokesman had said earlier Thursday that Odom will not make the trip to New Orleans. The team plans to provide another update on Odom's status before Saturday's game.

While the team was in Memphis Wednesday, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban met in Dallas with Odom and his agent, Jeff Schwartz, to work on a timetable that would ease Odom back after his weeklong personal leave.

Cuban could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday. But he made it clear before Tuesday's home game against New Jersey that Odom would get as much time as necessary to work through a family matter that prompted management to excuse the 13-year veteran from the team last week.

Yet Carlisle and Cuban continue to express confidence that Odom still can be what the owner refers to as a "huge plus" for the defending champions despite his meager production thus far (7.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game).

The reality is that the Mavericks have lost all three games Odom has missed and lack depth at power forward behind Dirk Nowitzki.

The league's reigning Sixth Man of the Year reported to his new team out of shape after a turbulent offseason personally and professionally, culminating with his near trade from the Los Angeles Lakers to the league-owned Hornets in a deal for Chris Paul that was later canceled by NBA commissioner David Stern, who is acting as the Hornets' lead decision-maker.

Odom had three poor games before leaving the team, which had followed three hopeful ones that had Carlisle suggesting on his weekly radio show on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM that the Mavericks were as close as they'd been all season to seeing Odom turn the corner.

"It's going to work itself out one way or another," Mavericks guard Jason Kidd said Tuesday of the Odom situation. "We just hope it works itself out soon."

Said Mavs guard Jason Terry: "We've got to go with the players we got. If you're here, you can help us. But our sympathies go out to his family."

this is true. Mike Fisher broke the story. Nothing was wrong with his father, that was all a cover up, the top Mavs players told him to get out until he was ready to get serious

If that were the case, why did Cuban have to meet with his agent?

LO has F'd this team up...now lets hope these guys can bounce back...SMH...please GOD for the good of this Mavs team and to get them back to a competative level...let this thing resolve its self and get LO out of Dallas.

** The quotes by Kidd and JET in that one article had a hint of that.

That's exactly it... the Mavs have depth at the guard positions but not at the forward position.

More specifically, Lamar's one of the best man and help defenders on the team. Outside of Marion and Odom, who else is a reliable defensive player?

The Mavs went 3-1 when Odom was starting and now the Mavs are 0-3 without Odom. It's not a coincidence.

I think it's closer to a coincidence that it is to being proof that Odom is indispensable to this team. Honestly, he's an embarrassingly low-efficiency 7.7/4.5/1.7 guy right now, and I don't think the numbers even reflect just how poorly he's played for 95% of his time on the floor.

Just for kicks, outside of Dirk, pick a Power Forward or Center that you feel has scored or rebounded or assisted better than LO.

And on defense, pick a power forward or small forward on another team that has abused Odom on Defense.

I feel dirty every time I recognize that Lamar Odom is presently "a Mav."

I feel even more dirty every time I see the thread title. Jeez, man...it's not "maybe," it's "may be."

Please...please, let it be.
