Drops average age of team a bit. I mean if he develops with Roddy and Jones, would be a nice piece initially with the BAE.
Is he quick enough to back up the 4? If we add Shaq, it's a good pick up, he can learn the ropes and play the 2nd of back to backs when Shaq can't go, 15-18 a night.

The only thing that matters with 3rd-string centers is whether or not they like tacos...

Spurs feel that he isn't any better than Matt Bonner...
That should tell you something.

I know Spurs fans were always real high on him and wanted to see Pop play him more.

You can't argue with his productivity for the minutes he got. His per-36 minutes numbers for his career: 23.4 points, 10.9 boards, 2.3 blocks, and a 23.3 PER.
Admittedly, it's based off a very small sample size (too small to read too much into it), but I guess it makes sense why the Spur fans wanted to see more of him. He obviously played well with the very limited playing time he got. To take a shot on a guy like this with a pretty small contract - why not?

I completely agree but the Spurs chose to resign Bonner over this guy for undoubtedly more money. I understand that Bonner is a unique talent at center so you're almost comparing apples and oranges but that signals a red flag to me.
Maybe he just didn't fit Pops' system well? Idk.

They are bringing over Splitter, and they decided as a backup center they would rather have one who can spread the floor.
I'm not so sure they wouldn't have brought him back as a 3rd center if they could have, but Mahinmi did want to come here because Roddy was on the roster.

That is definitely the flipside. Pop isn't the kind of guy that makes a ton of mistakes in situations like this. Although they did let Luis Scola slip through the cracks (can't remember the exact circumstances on that one).

Would the Mavs have still signed this guy if the Chandler trade went down first? Who is the better prospect here?
Anjica or Mahinimi? We should have a growing French fan base to tell us so.

Anjinca has a higher upside, Mahinimi is more ready to contribute now. 1 of them will be dealt probably by the deadline

Yeah, we're starting to assemble our very own French legion here.
Maybe it's time to re-sign Antoine Rigaudeau, just for the hell of it.

And let's not forget this Dragic (spelling?) guy that did pretty well last year in the playoffs for the Suns. The Spurs are definately not infallible when it comes to keeping young talent.

Ah, I didn't even realize that he went through the Spurs at one point.

At this point, it looks like we're taking out the trash. Not sure about mahami but he's a big man down low, in which you can never have enough of.

I don't think he'll ever see the floor for the Mavs. Watching him last night it was pretty obvious that he's got a long way to go.

Really? You've got to be kidding. A 11/7 statline with a block, while going to the free throw line 8 times? How can you be disappointed with that? He's mobile, he's athletic, and he quick for a center. Of course he looked bad if you compare him to McGee, but McGee has played 135 games in the NBA and is probably one of the few center's whose athleticism is going to completely trump Mahinmi's. Despite going up against a center like that, Mahinmi was constantly around the ball, tipping four or five balls on the offensive side even if he didn't get the rebound, and also showed what looked to be a solid jump shot if given chances. Its impossible to tell how good his free throw extender jumper is after one shot (which missed) but the form looked good, and he didn't hesitate in taking it, so its likely he can hit them at a decent clip.
So what I'm saying is that by no means is it "obvious" that he's not going to play for the Mavs. I'm not saying he's going to leapfrog Chandler, but that game was a solid showing and right now any ruling on his impact this season should be totally inconclusive.

He's got a nice skill-set. He can definitely throw defenders off with his first step and movement off the dribble. Ian needs to continue the bulk-up progression but he's a promising project.

He's a good project, but again, that's exactly what they're saying about him for 3 years now. Popovich never really game him a chance, and i don't think Carlisle will either so... He's really long, and can block shots, that's for sure. Would love to see him playing some backup PF.

Explain to me why you would put an 'a' in "give him a chance" but not in "he's young player".

He looked a lot better to me yesterday. The first game i thought he got bailed out a lot on some rather "optimistic" attempts and didn't control the boards well. We gave up way too many offensive rebounds against Washington for having the size we had. But last night he looked more controlled, aggressive, and athletic.
I still don't think he's going to get much/any playing time, though.

Well, "a" is not only the indefinite article, it also denotes something as being singular. Since it is obvious that he is only one player, the "a" is completely redundant in the first phrase. But if he wanted to express that Mahinmi has to be given (at least) one chance, it makes some sense to use that article there.
In English (and in German at least as much, probably in other Germanic languages as well) a lot of redundant articles (both definite and indefinite) are used. Slavic languages are much more efficient (and sensible imo) in that regard.

My inner linguistics nerd is intrigued. However, the combination of Slavic grammar and English words is not made any less distracting by your explanation.

Big guy...seems agile...cheap. Nice pickup for 3rd string center. He won't play at all unless someone gets hurt it appears.

Where will his time come from? Haywood/Chandler/???
I guess he could play some power forward..is that what you are thinking? I hope the mavs pick up someone a little more offensive minded for that role..but...maybe not.
