Not all games are going to be master pieces. Seems like the Mavs played down to their competition and really didnt have the bounce in their step like they did vs the Thunder.

Again, just making it hard on themselves.

PJ didn't look good. Hope it's just a new team jitters, but we need him to be better than he was in Charlotte.

I think 37 minutes is way too much

Because he's not a great shooter and his rebounding is average I'd split his minutes with DJJ.

DJJ has been solid and you can get by with now at the 4 because of Gafford.

PJ might be more effective coming off the bench where he can take advantage of most teams backups

100% agreed. I was surprised the box score had him out there 37 minutes. DJJ looked off because he couldn?t get in a rhythm either.

PJ needs to get in the paint use his size. He?ll excel at that here. I?d rather them find a way to keep him out of the corner, his 3 from there is trash.

I agree with this. I think PJ needs to be the new THJ and Hardy take the rest of the minutes.

It's too bad we couldn't trade Tim at the deadline. Kidd over-relies on him no matter how bad he is shooting.

An ugly win is still a win. And for whatever it's worth, the Mavs have now won 5 in a row, which is the single longest win streak of the season.

Also for whatever it's worth, this same Wizards team gave the Celtics all they could handle a few nights ago. The Celtics won 133-129.

Not unusual for teams to let up when playing teams that have been completely dismantled.
Remember the Mavs destroying a decent Utah team last season right after the Kyrie Trade?
No Luka and Kyrie and several others but Green and Hardy carried this team with 29 each to blow out Utah.

My favorite teams are:

Rangers (Bochy)
Chiefs (Reid)
Mavericks (Kidd)

Wonder what my chances are for my teams getting all 3?

Landon Thomas@sixfivelando
Kyle Kuzma on Daniel Gafford:

?Gafford's got the easiest job in sports now. You know, everybody is going to double, he's just got to catch the ball in the middle of the key, and he just has to make the right play... 16 and 17 in 24 minutes, that's tough. I am happy for him."

Defensively the guards were not good for us. They gave up too much penetration.

Hardy needs more mins thannThj consistently. Which wont happen, whixh is why he needs to go this offseason.

Hardy hit two big shots that kept us in the game.

But the plus news is we won a tough rebounding battle. And as many of us said, just having a center that rebounds will change everything.

Agree totally - I think Gafford leads the league in offensive rebounds

This. Hardy honestly should have gotten some minutes as soon as THJ went 1-5 or 1-6.

And the guard defense was stellar given where the NBA is right now. Where we fell down was our handling of forwards. Deni got whatever he wanted on the dribble and we had no answer for him. Kuzma was also dominating until we finally got him to miss some shots in the fourth.

We've had this problem against forwards for a while now. That's where PJ needs to earn his money and that pick we gave up.

Deni did got some of his 25 on Luka. A help defender getting score on when guards get beat because he cant get there in time is still a guard problem. The whole team had a poor defensive showing but if you cant keep guys innfront of you, the whole thing breaks down. Just adding another big isnt going to solve the same problem that rears its head with this team. They just have to be able to do better and be more consistent at staying in position.
We also gave up too many Orebs because bigs had to help and scramble.

This is why I prefer the lineup of Lively, DJJ, Green, Luka and kyrie

Obviously kyrie and Luka are the weak links but i think those other 3 guys are our best defenders in terms of ability to switch and recover.

DJJ is a underrated defender....

Several times ive seen Luka anticipating well on defense and cutting off his man trying to drive with the ball... when he's motivated and locked in on that end he's shown some pretty good feet and of course he's a tank comparatively and not easily knocked back.

he did it against Shai a couple times (got called for a block once that was BS) and against Dort too. Last game he stoned Avidja trying to drive.

Im on the fence about DJJ defense. Hes definitely decent at the least. I think Green is our best non big defender, personally.

It might be hard to refrain from starting Gafford if he keeps playing like this. I am far from hung up on who starts and who doesnt at this point. All I know is that its now a luxury to not have a major drop off when we bring in our 2nd unit.

We have a complete team. The Center position is the best it's been in a very long time.

It's up to Kidd to use his talent. People forget, we are fighting injuries.

Nico managed to get a Power Forward/Center which was our BIGGEST weakness. This team is just getting going. Gafford getting rebounds instead of back slapping the ball like Dwight is a huge improvement.

We have a young team with expirings and assets to move if the season goes to hell.

I know it's all star break time but this is the best I have felt about our team in a long time. We addressed our needs. REBOUNDING, DEFENSE. Luka and Kyrie can put up the points.

Amen

God I hope so...

Rangers title was thrilling and amazing

hate the 9ers so i'm glad the KC Swifts led by Mahomes and Travis Swift took them down

We don't need the 1 seed - just get us in the big dance with a healthy team and we have a great shot

Yeah this team is built (finally) to make a run and we dont have to pin it on "well if our THJs and Seth Currys get hot we have a chance", I really feel like on paper this is a top 5 team in the league.

I think the X factor is going to be Washington's defense. We need him to not just be ok on that end. Gotta be a lock down defender. I could care less if he clanks a bunch of threes. We have that covered.

Boom. I'd only add that we have to be a little patient as fans. New faces, injuries, breaks, no practice, etc. Let this team gel a bit. Of course, they could go on a tear, I wouldn't mind that...

Are we still using this thread?? Chiming in after just watching the Mavs demolish the Spurs.

I know the sample size is still very small, but three games in after the trade deadline, and this feels like a completely different team. It is night and day how much better this team looks, particularly when it comes to rebounding and defense. As mediocre and frustrating as the Mavs have been all season, I always felt that they were on the cusp of being really, really good, and the only thing holding them back was the total lack of frontcourt depth (and injuries of course.)

Well it looks like frontcourt depth is not only not a crippling weakness anymore, but we've actually turned it into a strength, which is kind of incredible. Gafford isn't just serviceable, he's really, really good. It is sooooooo satisfying to see him rack up offensive rebounds and blocks, especially after years of watching the Mavs get bullied in the paint.

I'm not at all convinced PJ was worth a FRP, but I don't even care right now because the team just looks so good all around, and the vibes feel great so far. It's not just the new guys. Hardy and Green both look like they're really finally figuring out their roles on the team, and I think both of them continue to be real assets.

It's gonna be frustrating waiting a whole week before we can see the team play again, but 6 wins in a row, including 3 straight with the new guys, and 2 of those being blowouts... you can't ask for a better way to head into the all-star break. I haven't been this excited since the Mavs made the conference finals.

Kyrie low key leadership after the game said "we are going to use this all star break to stay in shape" hopefully this is an actual topic behind closed doors with the team and everyone gets the message and stays sharp.

We are coming back vs the Suns, pacers and Cavs. A full game on the line vs Suns who are rights above us. So we need to come out hot.

Someone pointed this out on r/mavericks, and I couldn't help but grin with joy. Since the trade deadline, the Mavs have in fact led the league in rebounding.

It's obviously and extremely small sample size, so I'm trying not to get too excited about it, but how can you not love that?

And our defense has actually been good for a while now.

The stats with Irving though are astounding. He really was the veteran leader we had been missing. Always seems to know how to right the ship in the way Kidd and even Luka can't.

Just knock on wood ten times a day that everyone stays healthy.
