It sounds like you are talking about the defrag utility. My question about 6% reduction was on the registry defrag utility. It's a separate utility.

A lot of the free programs I use are for security and media playing use. So that said, I use VLC and Media Player Classic for video, and Foobar2000 for audio, and still use the old K-Lite codec package. Also, I use the free Videora Ipod converter to convert video files for use on my ipod and Creative media players, and I often use AlltoAvi when I'm trying to convert H264 files into Mp-4 format for use on a media player or on my second, slower desktop machine...
For security, I use ad-aware, spy-bot, spywareblaster, and the AVG free anti-virus edition.
Additionally, I use Daemontools and DOSbox to mount and play old abandonware games, I use CDisplay to read manga and comics, I use the much disparaged BitTyrant program as my principal Bittorrent program, I've used AviSynth for video editing, and I have also long used open office...

I just downloaded Videora for ONE reason...to convert some DVDs to my video ipod (80 gb classic)
and then it didn't have a "DVD" option as it showed. It had "Video" and "Online Video"...but no "DVD". Sheesh! What did either I do wrong or what do I do now?

ok...so I figured out how to get the DVD to the iTunes using Videora (I needed an Decrypter). But after decrypting and loading to iTunes...the video quality is wonderful, but I have no audio. Does anyone of you tech heads have a clue what I did incorrectly?

What format did you convert your files to Sike? MP4?

yup...mp4. My first attempt was with a movie I had lying around (Hell Boy)...and the picture quality was great, but with zero audio.
Then I tried something else...also to mp4 and the audio came through (it was only a 20 minute cartoon though)
any thoughts?

Hmmmm... I very, very rarely rip from DVD's (when I convert files they are usually ones I downloaded), so I have a dearth of experience in this area, but if I ran into that problem I would probably try ripping the DVD with Nero (unfortunately not a free program) into the highest quality Nero Digital standard and then I would try converting that that file to MP-4 with Videora. Of course there might be much more efficient ways of ripping and converting your DVD, but that method is probably what I would try if I ran into the audio problem that you seem to have encountered. Assuming you don't have a version of Nero installed on your machine, you might try using a trial version of a popular ripping program from download.com to rip your DVD(unfortunately I can't recommend any other one but Nero, because that's the only one I've ever used), and as I suggested above, then try to convert the file from your hard-drive to your ipod with Videora...

Sike I would say your best bet is to use DVDDecrypter for the ripping, then use Videora for the conversion. DVDDecrypter is free and has been widely used for years now.
I skimmed over this doc briefly and I think it has everything you will need.
BTW, since we're on the subject of DVD's, DVDShrink another piece of great free software.
Edit: Or take a look at this article. Apparantly now you can do the ripping and converting with something called Nero Recode, which is apparently free. Check it out.

Nero Recode isn't free.... but it is a nice rip utility. It's part of the Nero Ultra tools. I think you can probably find an old version online for "free"? I found v 2.26 on softpedia. But I think that version is trialware.

Yup, that's where the article links to for a download. I thought it was odd they claimed it was free, but figured I'd post the article anyway.

I use NERO 7 ultra but only the copy functions. The Video editing and converting stuff is not easy to handle and needs tons of memory and processor capacity.
When i remember correctly it took my PC ( OK AMD 1800 ) more than 4 hours to cut and convert a simply avi to .264
The easiest way to cut a video with free programms in my opinon is VirtualDub.
Easy, free but not that known is "DVD Flick"

Hmmm, lessee... foobar2000 first of all (BTW, if you guys have 5.1 sound on your computers, this is the app to have with 2.0 to 5.1 upmixer.... best in business. Opera browser. Digsby for chatting. Those are the 3 applications I use every single time I turn on my computer. Winrar is free, so to speak (I got so used to clicking the pop up "trialware" thing)

I have been absolutely losing my mind at work since I broke my Archos media player. I don't do well with no music, and I got tired of forgetting to bring new stuff up to work.
So I finally tried out Orb and I am so, so happy. I can have my entire library of music here at work (along with video for days when I've got nothing to do ).
Definitely recommend it.

Let me de-nerd this a little bit...
Best free software I use is Picasa. Hands down. LOTS of photo editing features, plus the ability to upload pictures directly to the web from the tool. The Picasa 3 beta is out now and has a lot of updated features (the red-eye removal alone is light years improved and works great!).

I love Picasa as well...did all the file automatically transfer with the Beta or did you have to do anything manually?

are you talking about to download the 3 Beta? I had to go to the picasa site and download it. The download will not happen automatically if you have Picasa 2.

is it worth getting the Beta or will you just have to get 3 when it comes out later?

i got the beta and i'm loving it. Honestly, it's worth it just for the improved red-eye removal.
There's some other stuff, too, like the ability to create a photo slide show video from within Picasa... but i haven't used all that yet.

Hey for all you family guys out there. An ad for COZI was run in my local paper so I checked it out. Seems pretty cool. Basically, it's an online, hosted family site. You can enter Calendar information (they have a toolbar download that will allow you to sync with outlook), shopping list info, send messages via the site to cell phones and email addresses. Seems like a great way to keep up to date with all the appointments and stuff that goes along with marriage/fatherhood.

My list of essential tools on Windows (that haven't been mentioned so far):
7-Zip - an open-source archiver. Can handle quite a few file types, including rar and zip (although the use of 7z is recommended)
Winmerge - A visual diffing tool. There simply is no better. Invalueable in combination with a versioning system like CVS or SVN. (integrates extremely well with TortoiseSVN a GUI frontend for the SVN client binaries, might be a full fetched client now)
wx-dev - an integrated IDE. Includes the gnu C/C++ compiler and a Form designer like the Borland Delphi/C++ Builder product line has it. Utilizing wxWindows as GUI tools library.
Virtualbox - Not sure the source is opened (I believe they have an open source and a closed source branch). A nice and quite performant tool, much like vmware, but totally free.

So I dunno if anyone can help, but I figured I'd ask:
I have a burned music dvd that I just got and it's in PAL format, so it won't play on my PS3. Is there a program that can convert my PAL dvd into NTSC dvd? I have DVD Shrink, DVD Decrypter, and DVDFab...but I didn't know if there was a way to do it.
Thanks guys

K-lite codec pack - run any file type via windows media player. http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm
here is a plethora of free software. some require an explanation.. just use the menu on the left to navigate through hundreds of free stuff. the Tweaking and Utilities tabs are a good place to start.

I compiled and provided the list for you. All the utilities I posted are completely free. No hacks, crack or illegal commercial products. no 90-day (or whatever) crap. All freeware
They are all useful. I can't tell you which ones I prefer. You have to find that out for yourself. I'll tell you some of the ones I like...
For video I use VLC player
For Audio I prefer Foobar 2000
GIMP is a very good alternative to Photoshop (and it's free)
Here is the cream of the crop in media players
1. MPlayer http://www.mplayerhq.hu/
only 1 draw-back, you have to compile yourself...but there's ppl nice enough to compile them for you http://mulder.dummwiedeutsch.de/home...ojects#mplayer
2. KMPlayer http://www.kmplayer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12142
frontend for MPlayer, but with some xtra options
3. Allplayer http://www.allplayer.org/en
not bad...standard player. will play almost anything just like the name says
4. GOMplayer http://www.gomlab.com/eng/
another standard
A lot of people are preferring KMP over VLC now. Test the goodies out for yourself.
