PGT: Mavs kick off the season with a W
I always wondered what Dirk would look like in the Robin role...
It's nice to have a PG that can distribute...
And a center that can rebound...
Mavs basketball is back!!

Great shooting night and they outrebounded ATL. those turnovers wont roll against a good team though. Good thing they shot 57% so it did not matter tonight

given the way this roster is, I think you'll be saying that a lot.

Enjoy tonight's win, but let's not assume that Dirk is Robin yet based off a single game. I hope you're right, but we have only seen our Mavericks play one NBA team.
The Hawks were 44-38 last season, and a key player who helped them earn such a record was Josh Smith. I don't expect the Hawks to be quite as good this year.
Last year the two teams split the season series.

If they are getting more rebounds than their opponent on a regular basis then this is a 53-55 win team. the defense wont be good but rebounding the ball will help that out a lot. Thats one reason i think Blair will be better for this team than what Wright brings..

Monta/Dirk/Carter combined to score 77 points on 28-47 shooting... Love that efficiency.

Oh stop being such a buzz kill. The Mavs don't have a "Batman" or a "Robin". This isnt the Miami Heat. The Mavs share the ball and make plays for one another. That's the Carlisle system.. playing off one another.

I agree with this, except about Wright. I can't wait to see him play with Ellis, because he'll finish those passes that Dalembert is fumbling. That said, this is a nice start to the season, and I'm happy to see a properly closed out game again.

Dirk was the best guy on the floor. He controlled the game. Batman Robin is not about points.

They serve different purposes, as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah Wrights a great finisher, but somebody other than Dalembert and Marion will have to bring some toughness and rebounding to the team. If Wright will rebound than he will get minutes and be a good rotation guy. If he is not rebounding i believe he will lose his minutes to Blair...

Not really since they play the same position. Dalembert will get 25 minutes a game. Only 23 for those 2 guys to play

Position is not the same thing as role. Good thing, too, or else a 7' outside-shooting power forward never makes it into the NBA in 1998.
Think a bit, man. This isn't 1967.

And BTW Dirk's defense 1 on 1 was great as usual...He is so underrated in ISO situations.

Just good to have GDTs again. Last year people were so disillusioned that we often didn't even get one.
One GDT, one win. Let's keep it up.

Good to see the site active for the GDT and PGT.
Things I want to see:
If Ellis can stay aggressive WHILE AT THE SAME TIME cut down on the sloppy TOs. (Or if it is just part of the package?)
Will Ellis see consistent minutes at the PG/facilitating on a regular basis even w Calderon in the game? (hope so)
How will teams defend the Ellis/Dirk P&R? (Seems to be a pretty potent weapon)
Great to start things off with a strong W.

Totally agree. For someone who can't play D, people sure do have a hard time scoring on him.
His lift did not look when we was rebounding though. He's clearly lost some body mass, which may negatively impact his rebounding this year. If it keeps him on the court longer to be lean, I think we are all ok with it.

Great win tonight against a pretty good Atlanta team. I really like what Atlanta did with their roster this offseason, getting some pretty affordable, young building blocks for the next five years or so. I expect athletic teams like this to give us a lot of trouble when our shots aren't falling. Actually, I expect every team to give us trouble when our shots aren't falling. But I'm very happy with this win.
Assorted thoughts:
- We must find a way to hide Calderon on defense. Tonight, I would have liked to see him guarding the guys like DeMare Carroll and Cartier Martin -- guys that mostly float around the perimeter and don't go into the post very often. I liked Ellis' activity against Teague and Schroeder when we saw those match ups.
- I hope we pay Vince whatever he wants this summer. He's so vital on the second unit and is really a Swiss army knife for this team. He grabbed a few nice looking rebounds, had a couple of great moves to the basket, and has been a dead eye shooter off the catch-and-shoot.
- Glad to see Ellis mostly taking smart, high-percentage shots and getting into the paint with decisive moves off the dribble. He took a few off-balance fadeaways off of screens that made me cringe, but I think he made more of those than he missed so I can live with those shots every now and then.
- Dirk is Dirk... his demise as an elite player has been greatly exaggerated. I don't know that we're going to see many more double-digit rebound games out of him but where he has tapered off there, he has also improved his passing greatly. I'll take the trade off there as long as Dalembert, Marion and Vince are still crashing the boards at a high level.
- I don't like the fit of Calderon and Ellis together for extended stretches because Ellis isn't a strong enough defender to offset Jose's lack of talent on that end of the floor, and they don't make sense next to each other offensively, but I am willing to be patient while they work that out on the court. They're going to be a tough back court for opposing defenses, though.
- Piggybacking off of that thought, I would love to see us make a trade for a defensive-minded shooting guard sometime this winter or over the summer... maybe even one that could move Monta to the bench. I have no idea how the numbers would work but a guy of the Aaron Afflalo/Courtney Lee/Gerald Henderson/Wesley Matthews/PJ Tucker ilk would be great to pluck from a team out of the playoff race sometime around the trade deadline. Maybe Devin is actually that guy... I haven't seen a ton of his play as a defensive SG from the last couple of years so maybe he is that sort of guy that can guard the smaller/quicker SGs and waterbug PGs that seem to give us a lot of trouble. If we lose Dalembert for any stretch of time and have to start Blair/Wright in the middle, we're going to need to lock the opposing perimeter players down. But as I said, I'm definitely not calling for any sort of immediate trade or a huge shift in the rotation among the healthy guys we have now. Just a little thinking out loud.

It felt like Mav basketball, again! How nice! It looked like Ellis likes being on the same team as Dirk. This is a big plus.
I was happy after the first game last season, though. I have basically the same feeling, interesting new guards. Questions about defense and the center position.

Great, now Ellis will want to prove that he can repeat this performance all year long. Hope he's benched the minute he starts volume-shooting to be the man. But, overall a great start to a hopefully great season.

I like when we push the tempo on offense. Even against bigger team down the road, our guys can have the quickness to run it. All about getting to know each others tendencies to start.

Actually it wouldn't be as long as you would think. The last time 3 Mavs had 20+ pts was April 12, 2013 vs Nuggets.
Dirk Nowitzki - 22pts
OJ Mayo - 20pts
Vince Carter - 22pts.

I think turnovers are part of the package with Ellis. He averages 3 a game for his career. He made a few mistakes last night that I'm sure he'll work on. I suppose as long as he isn't coughing up the ball in crucial situations, then I could live with a few TOs.

Loved it. Interesting to watch and I think the turnovers will decrease as they get a little more time playing together. Got more out of Blair than I expected.

Yeah, there's a big difference between 7 TO's and 3 TO's with Ellis. That'll obviously improve. He obviously won't shoot the ball as well. But, if he plays smart, he and Dirk could compliment each other quite well. Calderon could fit nicely into the outside shooting PG that has no problem distributing role that Kidd filled... I do honestly believe that he'll be a better PG than what the Mavs saw out of Kidd late in his career...offensively at least.

Mavs scored 118...without Wright coming off the bench! No question this team will score a ton of points this season. However, let's see how there defense holds up against the Rockets, Grizzlies, and Thunder. If we can win 2 of those 3, we're in for one hell of a season...
