I watched the live feeds from keynote this morning. The phone is absolutely sick and will completely change the smart phone market for the best. Right now, no phone even compares to the iPhone. Too bad its not on Verizon, or else I might have to go to the bank and order one on the Apple site.

Apple does it again. From what I've seen, this device, just by "cool" factor alone, is going to make all other devices look stupid. It has a freaking web browser, its an ipod, its a phone, it does e-mail. it will play games, videos....

the battery specs are troublesome though. Seems like you're going to need to have the damn thing plugged in all the time.

as someone who loves his iPod....I'm intrigued. Shoot me.

I'm sure as hell not going to buy one. I'm the kind of guy who signs a new phone contract every year and takes whatever phone is free!

to get rid of the stylus is a cool thing. And if the screen really is nice enough to read a web page (or a pdf file) then that's pretty cool. Not $600 cool, but cool. Maybe $150 cool.

That "pinch" finger movement to size pictures and websites had me giggling in my seat at how amazing it is. And the scrolling. And the visual voicemail. And the the full web browser. And starting sentences with "and."

I didn't watch the entire keynote. Is $600 the price? What about hard drive size, any word on that?

That looks so amazing, and will steal a huge market share from blackberry IMO. Now if they would finally announce the real video ipod with a wide screen and no buttons!

Seems pretty likely now that we know they have their new touch screen technology and new 3.5 inch screens perfected.

It's going to be like $399.99 when they do finally come out with it.

It will be interesting to see. They've never had an iPod with anything larger than 80 before right?....but for them to call it a true "video" iPod I would think you need to START at 80gb and then go from there. Video doesnt come cheap storage wise.

I'd be all over this if it was $599 and 30GB's. 8 just wouldn't be enough, I'd still need my 30gb ipod vid.

Well, it all depends on just how much video you need to store I guess.

I have a 20GB Archos 420, and I have my 12 GB's or so of music. That leaves enough room for about 4 full movies, and about 10-15 shor clips of funny stuff, say 2-3 minutes each.

That's quite a bit of video to have at any one time.

I've probably got somewhere around 60 gig worth of video on my machine right now, come to think of it. So I guess 80 gig size would be good.

not that I can afford such new toys when they arrive

For anyone that thinks this is merely just another blackberry type phone, read in to all of the features. This phone completely dominates everything out there. You can view webpages like you do on a computer. I don't know how many of you have used blackberrys before for internet, but the screen res. kills you and so picutres are all over the place, you have to scroll forever, and some pages just don't work at all. The iPhone should have this solved. For Apple's first shot at a phone, this is unbelievable. This should mean great things in the future for Apple and hopefully make other companies step their game up.

I love my Blackberry. Never underestimate the business share of the BlackBerry install base.

One thing I've yet to see is how keyboard input will play out on the iPhone.

My whole deal is... I have different needs.. I have a nice, compact 6MP Canon camera. A new iPod shuffle. And a fairly new full QWERTY Blackberry. They each do exactly what I want, very well, and I know I could never get the quality from a camera phone that I do from my Canon... I could care less about constantly having the music with me although it would be nice... etc...

It's just too much trouble to try and come up with one kick ass do everything device. Eh. Now, if this thing proved to be slimmer than the Blackberry and every bit as good (and cost effective) with email and IM, then I'd be tempted. And, of course, it would have to integrate with BlackBerry Enterprise Server and be able to let me set e-mail filters to make certain emails act like pages.

Rhylan,

I believe there is a virtual QWERTY keyboard with predictive text included on the new iPhone.

I'm pretty psyched about the visual voicemail feature that allows you to choose voicemails yourself instead of listening to them in the order you got them.

Have you people typed on a touchscreen keyboard? It's not pleasant.

I'm getting sick of too many things built into phones. Seriously, how much space does the iPod really take that you can't have an iPod AND a phone?

Maybe it's the "not-gonna-get-it-cause-everyone-else-will" in me talking, but I'm not that excited about it. But looks sell, it looks great, that can't be denied. And it will sell.

Im suspicious of the qwerty keyboard onthe touchscreen too. But he didn't seem to have any problems with it when he did the demonstration. I'd have to play with it.

Cisco sues Apple over use of iPhone name
By JORDAN ROBERTSON, AP Business Writer

Apple Inc.'s much-ballyhooed iPhone was unveiled this week after 30 months and millions of dollars in top-secret development. But the sleek new iPod-cell phone combination could wind up costing the company a lot more.

Cisco Systems Inc., the world's largest networking equipment maker, sued Apple in U.S. District Court here Wednesday, claiming that Apple's iPhone violates its trademark.

Cisco is asking the court to forbid Apple from using the name "iPhone," which Cisco has held a trademark on since 2000 and used to brand a line of its own Internet-enabled phones that began shipping last spring and officially launched three weeks ago.

Shares of Apple fell $1.49, or 1.5 percent, to $95.51 in Thursday morning trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market, while Cisco stock gained 17 cents, to $28.85, on the same exchange.

Cisco said Apple approached the company several years ago seeking to use the name, and the two Silicon Valley tech giants have been negotiating ever since to hammer out a licensing agreement.

But Cisco said the talks broke down just hours before Apple's chief executive, Steve Jobs, took to the stage Tuesday at the annual Macworld Conference and Expo to introduce the multimedia device.

Apple's iPhone is a touch-screen-controlled cell phone device that plays music, surfs the Web and delivers voicemail and e-mail. The product still needs FCC approval.

While Jobs was holding court in front of thousands of Apple devotees, Cisco had given Apple lawyers until the end of the business day to finalize the contract. The deadline came and went, and Cisco filed the lawsuit Wednesday seeking injunctive relief to prevent Apple from copying Cisco's iPhone trademark.

"We certainly expected that since they had gone ahead and announced a product without receiving permission to use the brand, that meant that the negotiation was concluded," said Mark Chandler, Cisco senior vice president and general counsel.

Apple argues it's entitled to use the name iPhone because the products are materially different.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris called Cisco's lawsuit "silly" and said there are already several other companies using the name iPhone for products like Cisco's that use the increasingly popular Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP.

"We believe that Cisco's U.S. trademark registration is tenuous at best," she said. "Apple's the first company to use the iPhone name for a cell phone. And if Cisco wants to challenge us on it, we're very confident we will prevail."

Cisco executives argue that, despite the current dissimilarities between the Cisco and Apple iPhone, both phones could take on new features or work on different networks than they do today.

Erik Suppiger, networking specialist at Pacific Growth Equities, said that argument is sound in an era of "convergence," when the Internet is increasingly used as a telephone network.

"I'd envision that Cisco would be inclined to add cellular functionality to its iPhone. I would not be surprised to see them add additional memory for supporting whatever media functions you might want, either — they'd be logical extensions," Suppiger said. "The phones may not overlap right now, but they would over the foreseeable future."

The lawsuit may be more than just a semantic scuffle. Cisco has been on an aggressive acquisition binge in the past year, and CEO John Chambers has been ambitious about building the company's brand name and producing more consumer electronics — not just the esoteric networking gear that chief information officers purchased at great expense.

The lawsuit could be an attempt to embroil Apple into a legal morass because Cisco is set on developing a competing product, said Eve Griliches, program manager at Framingham, Mass.-based research firm IDC.

"Cisco is a very, very smart company, and anything they can do to slow Apple out of the gate might give them an advantage at the negotiating table," Griliches said. "Chances are both companies knew this lawsuit was going to happen — the real question is, what's really behind it?"

But not everyone agrees that the lawsuit is strategic or even productive for Cisco, the most richly valued company in Silicon Valley with a market capitalization of more than $174 billion.

"Bottom line is that you'd think Cisco had a better use of its time and money than suing Apple over a word," said Samuel Wilson, analyst at JMP Securities.

On the iPhone you can use QWERTY, but they said writing with your fingers is easier. I'd have to use it in person to make a judgement.

That's what I'm saying. I have a hard time ever seeing myself with a phone/music player combo because my needs for each are so different.

For a music player, I just want something small enough to work out with. 1GB is plenty of storage, 2GB would be nice. The new Shuffle is the perfect size and weight.

I'll never have a phone small enough and light enough to compete with my Shuffle as a music player, since I need an email enabled smart phone with a QWERTY keyboard and guaranteed push delivery.

I'm a professed Apple hater.

However, that is tempting. Reasonably priced, which is very, very rare for them.

Yeah I was surprised. There must be a catch. If they're raising the price on the data plans or something then I will steer clear.

If it's still only $20 on top of my existing At&T plan, then I will consider it...I'm already spending anywhere between 10 and 20 a month on misc messaging and data on my non-smart phone anyway.
