I think it's a marketing ploy to generate buzz. The whole thing is still a "beta," but so is every other damn thing Google has going right now, just about.
So they do it pyramid scheme style.. anybody can sign up, but they need an invite from an existing user to do so. Anyway, I dig me some Gmail. Much better than any of the other web mail services, in my humble opinion. |

Yahoo! mail works pretty well for me. Has for years.

I think they are given. I have 50 now and been using gmail a week. I have only sent like 10 messages and received no more than six or seven.
