Places to live in Dallas
I have a relative who's moving to Dallas and will be working in downtown Dallas. He's single and needs to find a decent place to live that's convenient to downtown and not terribly expensive.
Any suggestions?

Rent.
Less than $1,000 per month, I guess. I don't know what the going rate on apartments is in Dallas.

and his commute? If he's willing to drive 1000.00 will go a lot farther outta town (north irving/ las colinas/ coppell) than up the tollway (addison) or up central (richardson/plano).
1000.00 wont get much uptown which is where most single young professionals want to be.

RE: Places to live in Dallas
There is also a light rail that runs into downtown from as far north as Plano.
Actually, cap, $1,000 will go pretty far in the Addison/North Dallas area (where I live). I agree that uptown is pricier, though I haven't really looked closely at any apartments there. I did have a girlfriend a couple years ago who lived in a pretty cool three-bedroom apartment in one of the Post communities, and I think their rent was $1500.
If we knew more about his interests, we could probably give better recommendations. It may be that the kind of neighborhood he lives in is more important to him than the commute (which really isn't all that bad here, from a few different places).

For that price, you can get a nice house on a 15-yr loan!! Renting is for suckers... if you can help it, of course.
To really be on topic, KG, I can say from all the apartment talk I overhear at work, that just under $1 per sq ft will get you a new, nice apartment, as long as you're not in the previously mentioned single yuppie havens.

I lived in Carrollton before I had kids. That seemed to be pretty close to anything going on, granted some closer than others.

oh word.
I may be speaking a little outta turn since I live in austin. But i think my metroplex livin pals keep me in the loop.
Personally I agree with Rhylan - rent is for suckers. If you do your homework it's not hard to turn a profit on a single family home - even if you're only squatting. Just don't fall for the 107% financing pitch... by the foreclosed homes of the guys that did.

If he isn't looking for anything too fancy, he might want to look at Magnolia Station. I know a girl who lives there, and she likes it... It's also next door to the Platinum Parking Garage of the American Airlines Center, so he wouldn't have to worry about parking for games.

RE:Places to live in Dallas
I live in Euless, on the boarder of Irving, just a couple of miles from Bear Creek Golf & Tennis. If he doesn't need to be at work until 9am, then the traffic won't be bad, and the commute is about 25 - 30 mins to downtown. I think it's still too far away from where the action is, but it's a nice apartment complex for less $$.

RE:Places to live in Dallas
I've lived in both Plano & Arlington. Don't remember much about Arlington (it was 10 years ago), but is not terribly exciting, I don't think. I like Plano, but I understand housing is not cheap over here anymore. The best thing about it is the school system, which I absolutely owe in allowing me to sail through college in 3 years.
