Default PGT: Short-handed Mavs beat Spurs

Dirk was killing it until SA doubled him, then he started spreading it around...

27 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists.

Kidd played better tonight against SA than the entire 2010 playoffs.

I was expecting something to do with baby rapers.. but I'll settle for this.

Dirk with some sick passes down the stretch, totally trusting his teammates and his teammates delivered.. that was the best part of this game. Guys stepping up all over the place. The patience with Ian down the stretch was surprising. Kidd was certainly up to the challenge tonight which is good to see considering the remainder of our games are against playoff teams.

- Roddy is looking damn good right now... 16 points on 50% shooting and 8 rebounds.

- Ian and Wright combined for 15 points and 17 rebounds with Haywood out.

- JET with a couple silly turnovers, but he had a solid game with 17 points on a super-efficient 60% shooting and 3-4 from downtown.

- Jason Kidd with a 14/10 double-double, shooting 4-5 from downtown.

Wright guarded Duncan better than he did Tiago.

Roddy was really solid tonight. 16pts/8rebs in addition, he had to guard Parker and when Parker went out he had to guard Manu. He did a good job of making them pass the ball, they combined for 22pts/17ast (Parker had 22pts/11ast by himself last night). I think they only scored 10pts when he guarded them.

Roddy looked great. I didn't like that 0-4 from deep which is why I think he should just be taking shots inside the 3pt line unless he is wide open and that brings me to another question, for the 3 point attempts before the half was he wide open?

I really liked Roddy's use of the PnR tonight, creating shots off of that was gorgeous to see. I think he was bailed out twice which isn't too bad.

Terry on the other man.. solid contributing night but my gosh when he makes bone headed plays boy does he put effort into him.

As for Lamar... he had a solid passing night, but other than that, bricked some wide open shots. Quiet night.

I loved VC and Roddy attacking the rim.

I've liked Odom's effort lately - the results aren't there yet, but his shot has to start dropping sooner or later...

Three of his attempts were open looks, he just missed them.

Lamar was very active. He has stay active. With Marion downt, he will be paired with Kidd more so he'll get open shots.

Carter is just so much better at the 3 than the 2. It's a no brainer when West comes back that Carter will be backing up Marion.

We can only hope. His passing tonight was excellent. It feels like he is slowly waking up.. and with the coming schedule we're gonna need him alive and ready because with out Wood and Delonte we really can't afford to miss on the offense end especially if our defense is short handed.

I love beating the Spurs. Always memorable.

The comeback in SA last year, the Devin Harris game (December 2005), the Josh Howard actually plays well game (right after Cubes bitched out the team and threatened to trade everyone in 2008), the Mo Ager in the starting lineup game... always memorable.

Bullets:

Game:
  • #Mavs beat #Spurs 116.51 to 108.81 PP100, set new season high in TRB% with 57.83%, but also in average shot distance (16.23 ft)
  • #Mavs take care of the ball, limit #Spurs to 4.40 STLs P100, season low for opps, but they shoot 56.33% eFG (season high for opps at home)
  • #Spurs clearly won the paint battle, attempted 38 shots. #Mavs only 22, but SA was 10-for-32 outside 3 feet on 2FGs.
Lineups:
  • Starting unit did its job, outscored #Spurs 33-28 on good D (94.91). Third consecutive game starting group has outscored opp, back to normal
  • Bench units big part of defensive struggles, allowed >110 PP100 in each of last 4, 120.77 tonight (-24.86).
  • Best lineup was starting group, Terrois backcourt: -51.39, Kiddois: +22.43 (D: 89.72), Jasons: 43.58 (O: 158.48)
  • C-Watch: /w Ian: +1.85 EffDiff; 116.70 DefEff; 55.56 TRB% - Wright won this: 16.23 EffDiff; 97.39 DefEff; 60.53 TRB%
  • Unadj. +/- to Vince (+87.48 PP100). Effs /w him: Off 139.08 - Def 98.59. Not loved: Roddy, Terry, Odom
Players:
  • Roddy now has 12 attempts at the rim in last three (9-12), only two tonight though. But hit 4-5 from 16+ feet, Dirk 6-10.
  • Wright leads PER (26.32) & WP48 (0.511), Kidd WS48 (0.389). Kidd, Dirk, Terry >20 PER - Odom: 5.01, Roddy 11.39.
  • Terry led team in TS% (78.13%), best rebounder was Wright (23.08%), Kidd assisted on 35.71% of FGs when on floor.
Rankings & Stuff:
  • gameflow chart: Both teams pretty consistent over time and, more importantly, #Mavs consistently better
  • #Mavs trading offense for defense lately, scoring 106.87 PP100 in last 10 (season average: 102.56), allowing 105.67 (100.27)
  • DefEff goes >100 PP100 for the first time since early stages, but still ranks 4th because offenses have picked up league wide after ASG.
  • #Mavs still own best starting units in league, outscore opponents by +13.55 PP100 on league best D (92.38). Miami is trailing (+11.68)

Sick....

Dirk Nowitzki led all scorers with 19 points in the first half. He scored Dallas’ final 12 points in the first half. The last time another Dallas player scored was at the 7:18 mark of the second quarter (a hook by Jason Kidd). The other four Dallas starters combined for 18 points before intermission. The Spurs’ starting five combined for 22 points in the first half. Nowitzki finished with a game-high 27 points (9-19 FGs, 2-3 3FGs, 7-7 FTs) to go along with six rebounds and four assists in 36 minutes. It marked his third straight game with exactly 27 points. He has recorded at least 27 points, four rebounds and three assists in each of his last three games.

Dirk and Kidd were both balling out of control tonight! Dirk is transitioning nicely into beast mode... The Mavs seem to make 2 or 3 baskets every night on passes that only Kidd would see...

Roddy's starting to look more like JJB...

Odom was playing hard and had some good defensive plays...

Terry needs to take better care of the ball, especially late in the game...

That insane 1st half set the tone for the game. He was so dangerous tonight, they had no choice but to double him and whenever he was left open he would make them pay. The double team resulted in teammates being wide open and knocking shots down. Cadbane will be pleased considering he harps on this very same issues of getting Dirk the ball early.

Anyone else notice when Carlisle made a key defensive adjust using Dirk?

Splitter was killing Wright in the fourth, especially on the pick and roll. Carlisle moved Dirk onto Splitter, and he immediately shut Splitter down on a possession in the post. He didn't take another shot the rest of the game.

Anyone that still thinks Dirk is a liability defensively just isn't paying attention.

When the dirkster is on, he is really something else. Last night he was aggressive but not actually shooting it as well as I've seen him. Anyway..

Sitting in front of me at the arena was a nice spurs fan. Not the jacked up on redbull rude as heck fans you sometimes get. The only thing I remember hearing him scream last night was "don't let him shoot!!!!".

I loved it.

Pretty funny...Vince is being interviewed and the journalist asks about "this guy behind me, roddy". So roddy stops what he's doing, pokes his head in to listen and then gives him a thumbs-up at the end.

This person must wait until everyone is going to take interviews, they are always one-on-one and quiet. Interesting.

Good observation.

Dirk's lateral movement is bad, but his lenght, experience and patience is a huge problem for guys like Duncan, Splitter, Gasol, Aldridge and co. He can shut them down 1 on 1 (under the basket) like no other MAVS player. He is very underrated in that regard...

^^^ It's more to do with Dirk's lack of jumping. Post players like Splitter have an array of fakes, up and unders that only work if the defender falls for the fakes easily. Dirk only keeps his arms high and never jumps anyways so he defends guys like Splitter very well.

And Dirk is a better defender than people give him credit for, he shut down Pow and Christina Bosh in the playoffs last year (considered the two of the top 3 PFs in 2010), not to mention great hands to strip the ball and that epic block on christina.

I think it also has to do with responsibilities. Brandon's responsibiliy is to challenge penetration at the rim. Splitter was sliding off that and they were hitting him with little slide passes. I don't recall a lot of scoring with his back to the basket.

I don't think dirks has the same responsibilities so he probably stayed home on him more.

Dirk is a very good post defender at least for 3-4 years now, maybe even more. I think he's top 5 amongst gave up point per possession more often than not, and he was 1st last year amongst premier PF's. (no role players) Dirk's problem on defense was always rotating, and pick&roll defense, he's a good, smart man defender.

Dirk went into beast mode early in the half. As soon as Jax came in to guard him, he kept fouling him, and Dirk just got angry. Angry Dirk took Bonner, and Jax all night.

Edit: Photos are huge. Got rid of them

QUALITY Win. Its been a long time since we had one of those. Hopefully, whatever was dividing the locker room has been settled, because they sure played like a team against the Spurs. This team still has a long way to go because it can't count on the great shooting percentages it had last night.

Call Dr. Scholls. Its time to start jellin'.

That's the beauty of the NBA. We're still not out of the water though. Ridiculous schedule coming up.

Though Marion is very important to our defense, this matchup defenitely suited Beaubois and Carter at the 3. Our spacing is better and Carter doesn't have to guard a guard. Of course our bench is thinner but it won't be once West comes back.
