Default Zaza Pachulia

Great article about how Milwaukee's defense has been much worse without him and obviously how much he has helped the Mavs. This was my favorite tidbit from it...

Quote:
Opponents are shooting 49 percent on shots inside of five feet when Pachulia is defending, per NBA.com player tracking data. That's a respectable mark that's significantly better than outgoing Dallas center Tyson Chandler and barely worse than DeAndre Jordan, the big man Dallas really wanted this summer.

Wonder how much he will cost to keep around after his contract is up.

Deron too...I really like both of these guys as part of a core. Even though they are at the end of their primes.

Good news is we have Zaza's Bird Rights as he's in the last year of 3yr deal. We can go over to re-sign him and Powell too maybe.

Unhappy

He stole 21 of mine and left a meaty bone.

Just kidding, love Zaza for holding down the fort!

Dirk's defense does seem improved this season. I wonder if Pachulia has nudged him a bit into focusing more on that end. Wouldn't surprise me.

Zaza had 15 double-doubles in 73 games last season... He has 17 in 32 games this season.

This season (34 games) compared to his career numbers:

15-16: 28.5 MPG / 10.8 PPG / 10.5 RPG
Career: 21.3 MPG / 7.1 PPG / 5.8 RPG

This season compared to his best all-around season (05-06):

05-06: 31.4 MPG / 11.7 PPG / 7.9 RPG
15-16: 28.5 MPG / 10.8 PPG / 10.5 RPG

How the hell is it possible that a guy who's been in the league for 12 years is having a better season now than he did a decade ago?? Is it Rick Carlisle's system? Playing next to Dirk? A winning culture? All of the above? What's going on here???

contract year.

Nah - I really think that after being on rather youngish teams for his career he loves his fellow teammates focus on "team ball" and also likes coach'em up Rick C.

Agree. 1) more veteran type of team and 2) better coaching to put players in a position to play well.

Playing with Dirk may have a little to do with it, but I really think it's more the other guys.

I knew I'd love his aggression and demeanor, but I have been massively and pleasantly surprised with his production. As DD said, I think it's just a better fit for him than some of his previous stops.

One factor I believe is definitely in play here:
This year's squad has a coach-designed practice of only Zaza crashing the offensive glass and all four other players running back to prevent easy transition baskets. So with that approach, he will naturally grab some more rebounds.
This doesn't explain it all, but it's part of it.
Zaza has also recently said publicly how happy he is to be playing for a team that is all about the team succeeding. So I imagine that plays a part in his late-career resurgence here.
He really is a very likeable, hard working player and I'm glad the Mavs got him.

Has Zaza ever been in a primary starter role like he has been here?
Has he ever gotten this many mpg?

Not sure that he was a primary starter, but as Underdog pointed out, he averaged fewer rebounds on more minutes per game back in '06.

Amazing that people are actually paying attention to what Zaza is doing. The fact that he has more votes than a guy twice as talented as him (Cousins) just shows the respect he gets for hard work and smarts.

Zaza: "Mavs were soft, had no energy, wouldnt share the ball offensively"

"We came out like it was a third day off. Its disappointing. We arent built like that"

"Everyone needs to look in the mirror as to how they prepare. Bring your energy. Bring your effort"

"We have great chemistry we have great guys. We just need to find that consistency to come out with that same killing mentality every night"

Glad someone is saying the things that need to be said. Hes exactly right. Cavs/Thunder b2b then bulls after a day off coming up soon. Lets hope the Mavs are ready to run.

I figured it would be Zaza or Wes who would have comments like this. Which is why they are my two favorites outside of the GOAT.

Thats it, Zaza is not leaving Mavs... ever.
I honestly don't remember Tyson having such impact on Mavs.
I can't imagine the Mavericks letting Zaza go. He was a steal and is a wonderful fit for this team. I love that young Center in Miami, but don't go after him and lose Zaza. It's not worth it. We need to live and learn from our mistakes. We had DJ and then we didn't. Luckily we do have Zaza. Embrace that!

Zaza has said this is the best environment he has been in team wise. Him and Dirk seem to enjoy each other on and off the court. I'm not sure what his contract situation is, but I think he wants to be here.

@ESPNSteinLine: Zaza Pachulia only missed a starting spot by 14,000 votes??? Wows

@ESPNSteinLine: The Big Georgian > The Big German

@ESPNSteinLine: I think this means Zaza Pachulia has supplanted Georgi Kinkladze as the greatest Georgian sportsman ever. What an All-Star run from @zaza27

He would be in if Kobe didn't count as a forward.

I've watched zero Lakers basketball outside of their 2 games against Dallas -- has LA been using him in 3 guard lineups, what's going on there?

He always starts at the 3 alongside a backcourt of Clarkson-Lou Williams (who at some point replaced D'Bustelo Russell)

Holy shit at Zaza though, I knew he had more votes than Dirk but never imagined he'd get this close to a starting spot lmao. I wonder if Dirk himself has ever gottenthis close

@MFollowill: To think of all the idle time wasted when I should have been voting for Zaza more. Missed All-Star starter by 14-thousand votes

That's just what I was thinking haha. I never vote for this thing but to get something like this done it would definitely be worth it.

I think the honorable mention is good enough. Plus, he is the total opposite of what an all-star player needs to be to have fun in that game.

Man, that would have been so awesome if Zaza got voted as an all star starter.

When the inevitable injury alternate comes available, would the fans prefer Zaza or Dirk?

(probably the last chance for either, but the ONLY chance for Zaza... I know who Dirk would choose!)
