The Official GDT/Game One Of The 2009 NBA Playoffs/Mavericks vs Spurs (7:00 CT)
The Mavericks have to steal one on the road to win this series, why not the first game? I know they can do it. Go Mavs!!
Dirk has proven himself as a premier playoff performer!
Dirk has career averages of 22.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game for the regular season. His playoff averages: 25.3 points and 11.1 rebounds.
To put into perspective how impressive those playoffs stats are, he's one of only five 25/10 playoff performers in NBA history. The others: Elgin Baylor, Hakeem Olajuwon, Bob Pettit and Shaquille O'Neal.

The issue is the matchups. The issue is clearly Parker. He's going to try to get into the lane and I don't think Kidd is going to be able to stop him in the way we need him to, so I want Kidd to work on the next main weapon who is more stuck on the floor. So that means I'd put Wright on Parker and Kidd on Finley. It's not that hard of an assignment for Kidd and I trust him to be aware of the situation and stay honest. jthig mentioned it with Barea, it might be a tease for Finley to try to take advantage of a smaller defender...try to post him and etc. That's going to take him and the Spurs out of their game and he's going to under-estimate Kidd.
We've got to put our quickest/best defender on Parker and try to run with it...that's Wright. Wright just needs to give him a little slack but not too much. I can live with jumpers for Parker, I know he can hit them but it's dangerous with letting him have a free lane to drive in, we're in trouble that way.
Mason is deadly with the 3s and he can put the ball on the floor and has some decent speed, so that's where Josh comes into play, he's going to be the next mobile option to work on Mason.
Off the bench I don't really see that much of a major difference with Jet and JJ for going on Parker. Parker is going to guard JJ more than likely but I don't see him trying to guard Jet. JJ might be able to make Parker work harder on defense, so that's one advantage. JJ might try to be crafty to cause an offensive foul or two on Parker as well.
Dirk and Damp go with Bonner and Duncan, respectively. I do think this is a series where Hollins CAN get some burn as well. Hollins and Bass can go the route they tried on Yao and front Duncan and work hard to block an entry pass-lane for Duncan. Bass is going to make Duncan work on defense or Duncan won't extend so the jumpers will be there for Bass, gotta knock them down!
Game 1 is big...but it doesn't make or break a series. We just gotta get at least one of them in SA. Either way, this is what I wanted. F tanking and taking your ball and going home...this is the playoffs and I've got faith in the Mavs. Enjoy the ride...

One only needs to harken back to Game One of the Western Conference Finals in 2003, when the Mavericks marched into San Antonio and ripped the hearts out of the poor and hapless Spurs, dropping 49 out of 50 free throws on their way to an inspired victory.
Let it now resume.

Pretty surprised that Duncan isn't a 25/10 player in the playoffs - that gives me some confidence going into this game.
Good thing Bruce Bowen didn't get much playtime this season.
Ginobili can't flop since he isn't playing.
Duncan's knees hopefully are bothering him.

Mavs just have to do what they do best.
Basketball IQ, leadership, defense and toughness of Kidd.
Heart and great shooting from Dirk and JET.
Hustle and defense from Josh, Wright and Damp.
All the little things from the bench, particularly JJB, Bass, Singleton and Hollins.
Smart coaching from Carlisle and the coaching staff.
With all these, as long as our beloved Mavs come out strong, aggressive and hungry, they will make this a great first game of the playoffs.
Lets win one on the road! What better time than to get the first game!!!
Go Mavs!!!

I'm backing off my earlier prediction of Mavs in 5.. Mavs in 6.
I really don't expect the Spurs to win this series without Manu. With Manu, I'd probably have a different outcome than the Mavs in 6. But without him, I can't see the Spurs taking 4 from the Mavs.

I feel like a kid on Christmas eve. I think booze to knock me out might be better than staying up waiting for the playoffs to start.

Mashburn is an idiot.... wow, just wow.
http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4077827
According to him, JET is the best player on the Mavs and Dirk is just another 7ft 3 point shooter.

Seriuosly...how am I expected to study if Dallas is starting the monster series later today.
All my attention is focused on the mavs today. I caught myself throwing paper balls through my room all day. I cant sit still to save my life. Its exciting. I think I am freaking out...well, 8h45min left to Tip-off...
I guess its ok to freak out as it is officially PLAYOFF-TIME.

Let's take this one! And the next, and the next, and the next! But I'll be fine if we just win this one.
We've got to have JET and Kidd knocking down 3's with regularity. If we can get 50% shooting and 7+ three's from the two of them, I feel a ton better about this game.

I hate this argument because it comes off like you don't like JET if you don't agree. I love Terry, we are lucky to have him on the team, but he is no Dirk.
We quite possibly might have found credit smoovsperts real life identity.
