Avery Johnson dismissed as coach
Art Garcia | Mavs.com
Posted: April 30, 2008
Avery Johnson was dismissed as coach of the Dallas Mavericks the day after a disappointing season ended with a first-round playoff exit in New Orleans. Incredible highs and heartbreaking lows marked the tenure of Johnson, who leaves as the most successful coach in franchise history by many measures.
Johnson became the eighth coach in team history on March 19, 2005 and posted a record of 194-70 (.735) during the regular season. He led the Mavs to playoffs four consecutive years, including a trip to the 2006 NBA Finals. His postseason record of 23-24 (.489) included 12 losses in the last 16 games.
“I would like to thank Avery for his valuable contributions to the Mavericks organization,” president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said. “Over the past four years, he has been an integral part of our team’s success. We wish AJ nothing but the very best in his future endeavors.”
In his first full season as head coach (2005-06), Johnson guided the Mavericks to 60 wins and their first appearance in the NBA Finals. He became the fastest coach to reach 50 wins (62 games), coached the Western Conference All-Star team and was named the NBA’s Coach of the Year.
Johnson led Dallas to a franchise-record 67 wins, the NBA’s best record, the following season. The mark was also the sixth best in league history. Following a 10-0 month of February, Johnson garnered Western Conference Coach of the Month honors, an award he won three times in his career.
This past season, Johnson became the fastest coach in NBA history to reach 150 wins with a victory over Memphis on November 17, 2007. He accomplished that feat in just 191 games.
“It is never easy to relieve a coach of his duties, especially one of Avery’s caliber,” owner Mark Cuban said. “He is a talented coach and I want to thank him for his efforts over the last four years and what he has done for this franchise. We wish him well in the future.”

Firing Avery won't do anything without a significant roster overhaul. Red Auerbach couldn't win a championship with this group. The top of the roster is great, but the 3rd-10th guys need to be a whole, whole lot better (excluding Bass).

One of my priorities is getting a coach who will encourage Dirk to shoot/attack at all times...and will design plays to get his best player in position to score best suited to his strengths.

Do you think Carlisle is the guy to do that? I just checked his stats and it looks like the teams he coached never averaged more than about 93 pts per game. I don't like it.

Dirk can score in the half court...JO never had that hard of a time scoring.

Guess it's actually official now that Art is reporting it. See ya Avery.

I loved having a defensive minded coach. I really did. It was so choice. I relished it, and laughed at teams who didn't put emphasis on defense.
The only reason that worked for 2 years, was because the Mavericks could score in their sleep for whatever reason, and didn't need to be coached on it.
And in the end, they couldn't score the ball to save their lives.
I shudder at the thought of going to an "offensive" coach, but what are we supposed to do otherwise?

the problem was that the defense was so suspect so very often...I DO NOT give Avery tons of props for D this season. I know a lot of this is on the players....but I refuse to think of him as successful defensive coach this season.

Right. What happened to our defensive identity this season? It was gone. Avery philosophy was blowing in the wind all season.

this may be too obvious....but I think this team's heart had quit on Avery after his retarded coaching in the GS series.

Oh certainly not this season.
I was just thinking of mid-season last year, and the playoffs in 2006. I was so proud he was our coach, I was very pleased.

But it's only a good move if they get someone who is a net gain over Avery. Guess we'll see. I have faith in Cuban to get the guy he wants, but my ultimate judgment doesn't come until our new coach is in place.
As of right now, I just can't help but think about all the good things Avery did for the team, which often seems to be lost in all of the bad.

I have been more heartbroken under his coaching "reign" than at any other time in my fandom of the Mavs....and that goes WAY back.

For the long run, you're right.
But for this core, for this group, any coach is a net gain, because of the disarray this current team. It had to be done, no matter who replaces him.

Like what was said above, a lot of the people we're talking about as candidates could possibly considered a net gain. They're either similiar in defensive approach, but it's a new voice and slightly different way so the results could be different. If it's an offensive guy, then it's totally a different look and if they're offense that will bring new wrinkles and possibly make for a more efficient offense.

He's traveling to find a new job, had to do that one.
I wonder if that was from yesterday or really is today. He already backed out of one interview. It's going to be VERY interesting if he does it.

I defended Avery all season long because he promised things would be different when the playoffs rolled around...
Things were not different...

Here is what I want from the next coach:
1. Experienced NBA coach: After this, I am done with rookie coaches, ex-assistants and the like.
2. Innovative: Does NOT try to mould the players into what they are not. Put in a system that is best for the players available. Make use of the unique talents of Dirk.
3. Develop young players: That was a great Nellie trait that Avery never picked up on. He hoarded washed-up vets, traded Quis & Devin and stunted the growth of Mbenga, Diop and Bass.
