Good podcast on Dallas by Brian Windhorst

https://youtu.be/CdG9pnpCP28

I really like how they are upfront and honest about Cuban trying to avoid the luxury tax and how the Brunson issue was mishandled.

I don't want to say Luka is going to want out but I will say I don't think Luka is going to be as loyal as Dirk.

Agreed, Luka being friends with Dragic, probably got us a conversation....but when we revealed his PT....I would think Luka would have to be at the forefront of any free agent recruitment....and would a rejection mean Luka can't get any one.....or is it like the Dragic situation....we were too honest.....should have gone with the notion....we don't know how the season is going to turn out....we have a role for a 3rd ball handler, replacing Brunson......Dragic looks at Brunson's minutes....he signs.....

I wasn't crazy about Dragic just like I wasn't crazy about that trade they made for Reddick.

But what I find confusing is that in league when teams are resting players do to injuries or fatigue how do you know what minutes a guy might play before the season even starts?

What if you lose Luka for a week or two doing the season would you have still stuck to your plan to only play Dragic minimal minutes or games?

What if the dude showed up in training camp and was clearly your best backup option at PG do you still stick when that playing time logic.

The Mavs do some of the dumbest stuff at times doing FA period and that's why I think they miss out on the boat every year.

Hear say, unless the Mavs FO confirm that was their pitch.

It?s not hearsay. Dragic was a party to the talks.

It is poor communication and/or translation though.

Bulls probably lied and/or exaggerated their role like Mavs probably did with McGee to get the deal signed. Mavs we?re probably honest that he could play 20-25 a night one night and SD/THJ could catch fire another and he?d get a DNP. Those are just facts.

And I would tend to side with the FO here. I think they have their sights set higher and will be patient. Still plenty of time and options (don?t discount trades) remain.

If the Mav FO disputes the statement then, why buy it? Tbh IDC maybe it is true. We 100% needed him more than what was "supposedly" pitched. Especially with thr idea of SD in the starting lineup. We literally have no trustworthy back up. Idk what their plan is or if they even have one, but I can't imagine it involves WCF - to - no one in the 2nd unit to even bring the ball up the floor, much less distribute and...dribble.

Well their track record of making moves July and on during the summer is pretty bad, so I don't know why people think they have some secret move they are waiting on.

I mean, you're talking about potentially getting someone like Mike Conley at this point who is one year off of Dragic in terms of age.

I really hope TMac is wrong here about the Mavs deciding they were out on Brunson when they found out what the Knicks were planning to spend. If they lost out on him, because they were out bid, then it means Cuban is still in charge, and still dumb af.

Seems like FO even managed to fumble a sign and trade trying to get a first out of the Brunson deal.

Why would the Knicks offer a 1st when they signed Brunson outright? They didn?t have to give us anything, so they didn?t.

Edit: maybe I misread your post. Was it reported that the FO was trying to get a 1st the Knicks, or just fans saying we should get/ask for a 1st?

I am 100% sure the Mavs would have done the trade for just the trade exception. I believe the Knicks wanted a pick to facilitate since they did not need to do a sign and trade. It?s possible they wanted a 1st and Mavs told them to F off. JB could?ve done the team that drafted him and gave him a chance to shine under two different coaches and secure $100m deal a solid. But he didn?t. So F him.

Greedy bastard Knicks, at the end of the day, they screwed us with KP, then this, asking for a 1st for an exception....Knicks come calling for help, tell to f off...

Agreed, Mavs could offer a conditional 2023 2nd rounder, condition that it be pick 60, it would be the Knicks pick, if not converted by 2023, then it disappears. Snt, really hurts no one, Knicks use the cap space they created for Brunson, we get a Trade Exception. At the end of the day, the Knicks should be dead to us in any future trade talks.

I'm still confused as to why fans are upset with JB.

He did what he thought was best for his career. We also have to take into consideration that Dallas initially didn't even want to offer him that initial contract back early in the season.

That's not JB's fault that is Cuban's for taking the gamble.

I will admit I was not a believer in JB early in his career but dude just kept getting better and under Kidd he just seemed to play with more confidence in his abilities.

So I wish him the best of luck because he didn't do anything wrong he was a UFA.

IN fact didn't Cuban take a similar gamble with Nash and he left kind of the same way as JB left.

On one hand there are a lot of fans that reacted like a G/F broke up with them...like weird jealous vibes. On the other hand there are fans that don't care and see obvious holes in JBs game and how he fit here. It was about the asset with most knowledgeable fans.

Idk if it's Cubans fault for taking a gamble. It may be more Cubans fault for not taking a gamble. You just said yourself that you weren't a believer in JB. He wasn't near the same player that he is now (offensively) that he was when we needed to make that decision to extend.

JB made the right decision. He would have ended up being traded with no ability to decide where he landed. NY came after him hard, so it was an easier decision to make than it seemed to be a month or so ago. I have to agree with Sturm that he woukdnt have finished his contract here. The problem remained, because he can't defend guards and gets lost on fundamental defensive plays. Bottom line is, you can't have that playing next to Luka...who also can't defend guards.

The loss of the asset is where it begins. That's enough to make this a complete disaster. You don't really have to be very knowledgeable to understand that.

Fans are upset with JB because fans will collectively always take the side of ownership against players. It is the American mentality to favor ownership over labor even if 99.99 percent will never be the ownership class. We are conditioned to tell the players to "shut up and dribble" while happily funding the owners stadiums with tax dollars (I guess that isn't considered welfare). We fancy ourselves as the billionaires instead of the more attainable millionaires.

You're making stuff up here. Mavs fans haven't really been favoring the FO for years now...certainly not on here and not really on twitter either. ESPECIALLY when it comes to free agency. They've made some decent trades, but the FA track record the last few years has been well documented as terrible.

But Brunson didn't even let a meeting happen with the FO in NY. Blame can go all around, sure, but that's kinda shitty when we just went to the WCF.

Yeah I never understood it. Fans get upset that a player does what's best for him and we blame him over ownership who really caused this mess.

I was saying why would Mavs go in thinking they could pull a first out of the deal, Mavs should just try and get a trade exception or anything NY wants to throw your way and be grateful.
