Default Ok, so what's the difference?

I know this is gonna sound really ignorant but.. What's the difference between broadband and DSL? Which is faster? All the while I thought both were the same, until my friends started talking about DSL being faster than broadband. I, for them not to notice my ignorance, decided to agree with whatever it was that they were talking about. Little did they know, I had no idea what we were talking about. LOL@me Thanks you guys...

Not sure what your friends are talking about. Broadband is just generally used to refer to high speed internet (non dial-up). In that context, DSL is simply a form of broadband.

Now, perhaps they mean that cable internet is faster than DSL. In that case you just have to check with your local providers to see what kind of service they give.

In the metroplex, unless Time Warner has increased their speeds, Verizon's Fiberoptoc service (FIOS) is the fastest residential internet service around.

Broad Band I belive is an all girl rock group, like The Donnas.
DSL I belive stands for D@#K Sucking Lips, like Angelina Jolie.

edit: That is probably the worst one liner ever.

DSL is about 768kb per second, or about 13 times faster than 56k .FIOS is about 5mb per second, or about 10 times faster than DSL.

There is no set speed for DSL. In fact almost everyone DSL is now at least 1.5 mb per second.

And Fios has optional speeds as well. I have 15mb down/2mb up.

15 down/ 5 up for me. I have a coworker in the northeast that claims his cable connection is 15/15.

Unreal.

broadband means high bandwidth internet...NON dial up.

dsl and cable modem and fios are considered broadband.

typically depending on your service provider dsl is slower than cable modem and FiOs beats everybody...my boy has 15 down and 2 up with 5 static IPs.

i have 8 down and 2 up with comcast cable modem..

and my work has 10 megs baseband..so you can use the 10 for either up or down...its about $1200 a month..but its sweet...it runs through 5 pairs of copper. And its from XO communications.

Basic Fios is 5/2, or at leasti t was when I signed up.

I was bummed, because when Fios was first rolling out they were saying that the middle tier would be 15/5, but they made it 15/2 instead. So no upgrade in upspeed for the middle tier.

Most basic FIOS is 5/2.

I signed up when it first became available. I've got 15/5. But looking at Verizon's website yesterday I noticed that they don't even offer that anymore. Now the premium is 30/5. I am certain that soon you may be able to take advantage of that speed.... but right now FIOS users will attest that the benefits can't be fully realized because of the slowness of the sending side (your connection to a host is only as fast as your slowest link). Some obvious exceptions to this are... for instance... I downloaded the Longhorn beta last month and it took approximately 13 minutes (1.76GB).

That's true. The vast majority of the time you'll never utilize the bandwidth your service is capable of.All I know, is that my ping while playing Counter-Strike with my Fios is wicked low.

But the best consistent speed I've ever experienced was living in the UNT dorms. That sh&*t was fast.

No kidding. I spent one semester in the dorms at UNT, and speeds on the weekends were just ungodly fast.

That was during the final good run of Napster, and there was another big p2p at that time, one of the first to do video files. Can't remember the name...[edit]Scour! Man I loved Scour.

Plus the entire dorm was on a domain and most people didn't know anything about sharing or security back then........maybe I should leave it at that.....

Ah those were the days....

As far as FIOS speeds, I do get to take advantage of the 15 down because I use newsgroups along with a download manager, for multiple connections at once. When I was doing torrents the upload was quite nice to keep you in good standing on monitored sites. But yeah, 30 is not really needed right now, unless you have several computers that need bandwidth at the same time.

It sucks?

And it's old?

Although, the original Unreal Tournament is quite old now, and I still love it, so it must just be that it sucks.

Oh man....we're gonna have to agree to disagree about this one.

It's probably the most popular online multiplayer game of all time ....though I'm sure WOW is now. I don't play much anymore, but in college I did the CAL leagues and the matches and scrims and all of that good stuff.

I remember the original Unreal. It was always a little to Arcade-style for me. No strategy. I think I still have the CD somewhere...

I don't think I'd use popularity as a basis for quality measurement, especially knowing your disdain for reality tv.

I prefer fast action first person shooter, a bit less complicated. The Unreal Tournament series and the original Medal of Honor: Allied Assault are my two favorite first person shooters.

Man, did we ever dereail this thread....

Ah those were the days....

As far as FIOS speeds, I do get to take advantage of the 15 down because I use newsgroups along with a download manager, for multiple connections at once. When I was doing torrents the upload was quite nice to keep you in good standing on monitored sites. But yeah, 30 is not really needed right now, unless you have several computers that need bandwidth at the same time.

a big P2P for music and video was IMESH...i think the icon was a little red lady bug....i downloaded so much jenna jamison porn it was sick. i miss having like 20 gigs of just porno....

i remember selling cd-r's to the nerds in my dorm hall for like $5 and $10 bucks a piece i would just burn them a bunch of .avi's and they could beat their meat for cheap......did that just rhyme?

Plus the entire dorm was on a domain and most people didn't know anything about sharing or security back then........maybe I should leave it at that.....

Somehow I missed this one earlier today...

Yeah you're right though. The file sharing around there was rampant. They really closed off a lot of ports finally sometime in 2002. I was only there 3 semesters in the dorms. Of course if you had a good port scanner and some know-how.....

Oh and the counterstrike on the local dorm server was the best, thig

Scour! Yeah... that takes me back.

I was in the dorm at A&M in the Fall '98 - Spring '99 year.. this even predated Napster. We had Scour, which was intermittently good... but the best was everyone's unprotected Windows shares.. I can remember shift-selecting hundreds of songs and just swiping them all in a matter of minutes.

One dude even indexed the shares and ran a search engine out of his dorm.. that was money. Back in the days of the wild wild west.

Well I was only in the dorm for the fall '00 semester, so I didn't copy anything from you.

uummmm...there are many things different with DSL/Cable

mainly......
the speed of DSL / Cable (broadband) depends on where you are located.

Digital Subscriber Line -
uses telephone line to connect to internet..it is at a different frequency so you cant hear it.
speed depends how far you are from the main switch/hub (building). the closer you are to it the faster your service may be. usually upload/download is set at a certain KB/S. it also usually does not fluctuate..but is rather constant.

Cable -
uses cable jacked into the cable box (usually outside your house in backyard on brown telephone pole). the speed depends how many other cables from other houses are also connected. the more people connected the slower it will be. for example many apartment complexes boast that they have a "T1" connection..but so many people are jacked in that it is so slow..sometimes slower than dial-up. cable usually has HIGH download kb/s but uploads rather slowly (most ive seen is capped at 30kbs)..but certain times during high traffic i feel that it gets even slower.
