IMO our best case scenario is Bagley/Doncic to Kings, Young to Hawks, MPJ to Grizz. That leaves us with Doncic/ Bagley, who are among the safer prospects available. MPJ’s back and lack of handle has me running scared. Also, his entire family is injury prone (seriously, look it up).

I dislike the notion that small centers are the new center. Its combination of things that make smaller centers work. Sure it seems to work fine if you have KD steph and klay, Irving Tatum and Hayward, lebron and anyone, harden Paul etc. We dont have that, powell and Dirk are exposed at the 5 and Motley isnt a great defender yet. It doesnt get much more mobile than Powell so it's not just mobility.

We are so far away from contending even with Cousins if healthy. We are in a good position to draft BPA and add what we can in f.a. let the warriors have their run while we build an actual core of you talent.

Shams Charania @ShamsCharania: Sources: NBA Draft lottery teams were informed Wednesday that Missouri’s Michael Porter Jr., a projected high-lottery draft pick, canceled second Pro Day workout Friday because of hip spasms and would undergo tests.

Hip problems are often connected to back issues. Big time pass.

I mean seriously, the guy can't get healthy enough for a f'in workout?

"Eddie Sefko: Mavericks have seen workouts from Wendell Carter Jr. and everybody else slotted from 2 to 11. Or will see them work out individually if haven’t already. Moving up or down still not out of the question. Memphis, Orlando and Chicago also in the move market. 1 week to sort it out."

I'd be excited about moving up in the draft. Moving down, no no no.

Also, I've been really hoping we get a fully healthy Porter, but it just doesn't look like it's going to happen. I feel horrible for the guy, but if he is having legit hip problems now, I just don't see how his body is going to handle any kind of NBA career.

I will say that perhaps this hip spasm thing is to get him to Chicago. It's all a game right now.

Very astute observation. He likely wants to avoid Sac or Memphis

If that's the case Cuban will probably start showing interest in him to call their bluff to see what they might offer.

LOL

Shams Charania @ShamsCharania: Teams have been informed that Michael Porter Jr. is feeling better and MRI returned clean, with "positive review," league sources told Yahoo. Workout assessment could be rescheduled on Friday, sources said, but decision likely comes later today.

Yeah he cant flat out say he doesn't want to be in Sac or Memphis due to the bad optics. Maybe this is also a signal to those teams "look elsewhere"

MPJ is really starting to look like a clusterfuck of epic proportions. Either a) he felt injured so badly that all of a sudden he felt the need to cancel a workout, or b) he's playing mind games so he lands in his city of choice. Either way I'm starting to think hard pass.

Apparently common to have the sort of inflammation to cause such spasms, but I still am not sure. Saw somewhere that medical staffs may be able to do more evaluation. Part of why he is now trying to keep the workout tomorrow.

Could be trying to find his way to Chicago. Heard somewhere that's where he wanted to go.

I've been the biggest advocate of a healthy MPJ on this board, ranking him #2 overall right behind Ayton, but this kind of news one week before the draft has him out of my top rankings completely... I'd probably still be interested in him if we traded down, but no way in hell do I take him at #5 when one of Bagley/Doncic/Bamba/JJJ will be there.

Mike Fisher made a good point on the radio that Porter Jr's pre-surgery issue was first reported at hip spasms.

If we were drafting 12-15 I'd probably gamble on MPJ, but at 5 we got to look elsewhere.

@MavsDraft: Since Rawle is working out for Dallas today (per @Schultz_Report) here’s my scouting report of Alkins http://mavsdraft.com/scouting-report-rawle-alkins/

I'll pass on most guards who have weak handles and are less than 6'5" unless they are athletic freaks or have great jumper and handles. I dont want rc running small guards out at the 3 for small ball garbage

Thinking Mavs would have to throw in some more incentives to get it done, but it isn't too far fetched.

Hey, Fisher said the Mavs would look to taking on salary for a top 10 pick, so you KNOW it's not going to happen.

Nice to hear our boy Sike hosting a Mavs pod...

@NickVanExit: The Mavericks have had a sit down meeting with Michael Porter Jr., his family, and his agent in Chicago.

Per Donnie Nelson in this @dallasnews piece: https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/dal...s-picking-no-5

Quote:
There is a time to roll the dice. There is a time to take a chance. When you're picking that high, you would like to have star potential. As you're projecting, you're considering not just the here and now of where they are collegiately. You're looking ... do they have the mental mindset to become great, do they have the work ethic? What you don't want to do is put all your eggs in the guy with the biggest upside but he's also got just as much chance to be a failure and you blow your brains out. That's not fair to anyone in our locker room. We would never do that to season-ticket base, ownership, Mavs fans globally. When you're picking five, you've gotta come away with something and hopefully that something has some special upside.

@TheKobeBeef: No one knows anything until June 21.

Carry on.

I may be reading way more into that, but it sounds like we're going Carter.

That's a great quote because they will all be blowing their brains out if they fail this draft.

Explain? Because if we're talking about a high floor over a high ceiling I'd rather have Mikal Bridges.

Where did you get that from the Q&A?

Sounds kinda like they don't want to risk a high ceiling, low floor prospect a la Bamba or JJJ if you're reading between the lines in that article.

I still think it's all gobbledegook though. Watch us draft Trae Young.
