Mavs about to lose the Bibby race?
August 26, 2007 - 9:27 am
Plain Dealer -
League sources have said that a possible deal for Sacramento Kings ' point guard Mike Bibby is still on the table for the Cavaliers, but it will take letting go of Drew Gooden to sweeten the pot.
The Cavs could also make a one player for two deal with the New York Knicks or Dallas Mavericks . The Knicks have 16 players on their roster and the Mavericks have 17. Each team is in need of giving up two for one to reduce their roster.
There's also a wild card in the mix. The Cavs may also conduct some secret workouts to see what's left of former players like Allan Houston and Oakley. Jalen Rose, who spent last season on the bench with Phoenix, could also receive a look. The Cavs still have to decide what to do with restricted free agents Anderson Varejao and Sasha Pavlovic. Expect those deals to get completed early next month.

I don't want Bibby in Cleveland. I'm all for Gibson.
Hook 'em.

i'd love bibby in dallas. A quality point guard still hungry to win a ring... how valuable would that be come playoff time.

It says the Cavs would welcome two for one trades. It doesn't say the mavs are interested in Mike Bibby. Bring in Cwebb and call it an offseason.

Bibby and/or Hughes are not the answer for this team. You dont make a deal for the sake of trading

But it is good practice to make a deal for the sake of satisfying the bored posters on fan message boards.

2 For 1, 3 for 1, or 3 for 2 possibilities with Cleveland.
1) J. Terry, Mbenga, & Pops for Larry Hughes
2) J. Terry, Buckner & Pops for Larry Hughes
3) J. Terry, Mbenga, & Pops for Gooden & E. Snow
4) Mbenga & Pops for Wesley (expiring contract we could waive)
5) Ager & Pops for Wesley (expiring contract we could waive)
6) Buckner, Mbenga & Pops or Ager for D. Marshall
7) Buckner, Mbenga & Pops or Ager for D. Jones & Wesley
If the Cavs are reluctant to part with Gooden in a Bibby trade I can't see them trading him for Terry. Would they be interested in a Terry for Hughes deal if they don't get Bibby? Who knows, but I would take Hughes for Terry even though he's injury prone. More likely I think is dumping two of our end-of-the-bench guys for one of theirs. For example if they think DJ and/or Pops is worth a flyer we could take an expiring contract of Wesley and just waive him to create roster openings for a FA without waiving anyone else.

True but you also have to realistically look at the team's weaknesses (as well as roster crunch) and explore all possibilities to improve the squad. Do you know the Mavs were the second worst team offensively in the paint last year? Have we added any inside scoring or guys who can penetrate? No. The combination of Terry/Harris proved to be inadequate defensively in the backcourt, and will likely play 20+ mpg together again if both remain. Is this addressing an issue? No. We currently have too many guys who play SG (Terry, Stack, E. Jones, Ager & Buckner) and no one to back up Dirk. Since none of those guys are likely to be waived are we addressing the glut by doing nothing? No. And finally, the Mavs choked in the first round against freaking GS. Instead of reacting and making changes, the Mavs brass are falling back on a very misleading 67 win regular season. Many of the weaknesses exposed vs. GS were the same weaknesses exposed by Miami when they made their miraculous comeback. To just assume we will coast to another 60+ win season and a #1 or #2 seed is naive IMO. In a big series, teams know how to play Dallas and we have done nothing to rectify our weaknesses.
Do something Donnie.

If the Mavs are willing to give DJ away for nothing, and Cleveland is interested, the Cavs have a big enough trade exception to take DJ for nothing; and Pops is not yet guaranteed. So the Mavs could actually save MORE money by just handing them DJ and not taking Wesley back. About $7.5MM over the next two seasons including luxury tax payments.
If Pops was part of the deal for Cleveland to do this, Mavs can trade him separately to Cleveland, again for nothing, due to the minimum salary exception. I don't consider there to be any dollar savings to the Mavs from this (yet) because Pops' contract isn't guaranteed until Aug 31st.

Well people wanting to trade JET for a low post big are sadly mistaken bc no team is going to trade a player like that for JET bc they are rare this day in age. Im just saying the trades for Bibby or Hughes are ridiculous because they dont help the Mavs in anyway
