From FWST:
Quote:
Marquis Daniels (strained neck) is doubtful against Denver, while Adrian Griffin (hamstring) is questionable.

The Mavs haven't lost four in row since December 17-23, 2003.
When will the injury list be cut to zero?

From the DMN

Quote:
Harris might play later than thought: Devin Harris, out the last 13 games with a strained left quadriceps, was expected to play the last five or six games of the regular season. Now, he may only play in the last week of the season.

"I'm just trying to build the strength back up," Harris said. "This is the week to do that. I will play some games before the playoffs, but it may just be the last few."

Briefly: Van Horn underwent successful surgery on his broken right hand Tuesday. ... The Mavericks appeal of D.J. Mbenga's flagrant foul-2 was denied by the NBA. The team was hoping to knock it down to a flagrant-1. ... Marquis Daniels returned after missing the last two games with a strained neck. He scored 11 points.

I'm very disappointed about the delay of Grif and Devin's back though I know they have to make sure they can play healthily. Players need time to get in game shape returning from jnjury. No many games left!

Injury report

Avery Johnson said swingman Adrian Griffin, who has a strained right hamstring, will play in Saturday's home game against New Orleans/Oklahoma City.

Point guard Devin Harris, out because of a strained left quadriceps, will return for either Wednesday's game at Golden State or April 13 at Phoenix, Johnson said.

Griffin's return delayed

Johnson says guard might not play Monday against Clippers, either

By CALVIN WATKINS / The Dallas Morning News

Avery Johnson said it wasn't a setback, but defensive stopper Adrian Griffin was in street clothes again Saturday night.

On Friday night in San Antonio, Johnson had said Griffin (strained right hamstring) was a game-time decision for the Mavericks' contest against New Orleans at American Airlines Center.

Johnson said before the game that Griffin was progressing but wouldn't play.

He then added that the guard could miss Monday's game in Los Angeles against the Clippers.

Griffin has missed the Mavericks' last 15 games.

"Hamstrings, man, that's the one injury that I just hate because I had one and it takes some time," Johnson said. "Sometimes you're ready and then you're not."

Meanwhile, Johnson said guard Devin Harris (strained left quadriceps) is making progress. Harris, out the last 15 games, is still on schedule to play in the final two regular-season games – at home April 16 against Utah and April 19 against the Clippers.

"You have projections and timetables and sometimes you meet them and sometimes you don't," Johnson said. "You just want them healthy for the playoffs and you don't want any setbacks. Some guys respond faster than others."

Howard playing well: Johnson received a scare when Josh Howard slipped in the third quarter of Friday night's game against the Spurs. Johnson was concerned that Howard had re-injured his hamstring. He recently returned from a strained left hamstring.

Howard was fine and played well again Saturday night. He scored 19 points in 26 minutes against the Hornets.

Johnson a fan of Paul: Hornets rookie point guard Chris Paul is the favorite to win the rookie of the year award. And Paul has gained a fan in Johnson.

"They might as well give him the trophy," Johnson said. "He's really special. He's an NBA point guard, that's what he is. He's not a tweener or a combo. He has great court vision and a lot of maturity for his age."

Paul is averaging 16.4 points and eight assists. He leads the NBA in total steals and is seventh in assists. Paul finished with nine points, five assists and five rebounds against the Mavericks.

Briefly: The Mavericks were denied a roster exception by the league. The team was seeking one because multiple players have been injured. A roster exception would have allowed the Mavericks to add a 16th player. ... Hornets forward Desmond Mason (sprained left knee) and P.J. Brown (sprained left ankle) were listed as questionable for the game but played. Mason, a former Waxahachie and Oklahoma State star, played with a heavy brace. He had seven points and two rebounds off the bench. Brown scored 12 points. ... Dallas has owned the Hornets in Charlotte, New Orleans and Oklahoma City. The Mavericks have beaten the franchise 17 consecutive times.

From the FWST:
Quote:
No exception

The NBA denied the Mavs' request for an injury exception to sign an extra player, owner Mark Cuban said.

Asked why, Cuban said the league didn't recognize Pavel Podkolzin as one of four injured players required for the exception because he's currently playing for the Fort Worth Flyers in the NBA Development League.

The Mavs consider that stint a rehab assignment for the stress fracture in Podkolzin's foot.

Also from FWST:
Quote:
Hamstrung?

When Josh Howard stepped on Bruce Bowen's foot and slipped in the third quarter against San Antonio in Friday's game, nearly going into the splits, Avery Johnson's first thought was hamstring injury.

"The thing I was hoping is that it was some other part of his body, just not the hamstring," Johnson said. "It could have been anywhere -- hip, chest, back, anything -- but not the hamstring."

Howard said his hamstring felt awkward, but after sitting out for a few minutes, he was fine.

What's up with Griffin? How many times has AJ said he'd return only to see him in street clothes again?

His hamstring is still hurting.

Then the injury was worse than they let on in the beginning?

I think they just don't want to risk good guys being out in the playoffs. We either have the 1st or 4th seed and will face the Spurs in the 2nd round, so its better to have the right guys healthy.

Also, both first round matchups are similar...the Clippers or the Kings...or the Grizzlies too I guess.

I would just say he's not healing as fast as they expected. Nothing ulterior about it. Some do, some don't I would imagine. I also don't really see how you can gauge a hammy that well either, it's soft tissue that has to tough to diagnose.

What's the advantage of lying about injuries?

I seriously doubt the Mavs are holding back healthy players. After all, they want to win as much as possible.... with the championship their ultimate goal. Injured players may prevent that.

Griff's always been prone to nagging injuries and he's playing more minutes then he has since his rookie season. He may not be suited for the role he's playing.
