Just for the record:

Dirk Nowitzki reaches 9,000 field goals made for his career

Very happy to see that last year was a total aberration, as most of us here suspected. I wish the roster was a little better this year, but I think it's still good enough to get into the playoffs and give one of the powerhouses a scare this summer. Hopefully we can add a center that better complements Dirk's finely-aging game and we can make one or two more deep runs before the Uberman hangs 'em up.
Russel retired after his age 34 season. Duncan last year was 36 and would be on the list I'd think. But yeah dirk is dirk. I think the comparison that's most apt for how he ages will be Kareem. Kareem pretty much quit rebounding as he got older but he was a 20+ ppg scored on high efficiency because he had that one go to move that it really didn't matter if he was covered and that you could t stop. Dirk is the same way with the dirk fade replacing the sky hook.

Not to pick nits, but Russell turned 35 in February of his final season. He wasn't very good by his own standards, but he was still one of the best players in the league.

And I totally spaced on Duncan. Very good call.

Jesus, now I don't feel bad about nitpicking. You're being worse. He was 35 for half of the season.

And he also averaged a shade under 20 rebounds per game. And the Celtics won the championship. Offsets the scoring difference a bit, no?

Different position, but let's not forget Steve Nash.

He had a 50-40-90 season and played great till 38.

Dirk can be like him or maybe even better. Nash was injured most of the time, Dirk looks OK.

What I like about Dirk is that almost all of his shot attempts are good attempts even if he misses. Very rarely does he force things or attempt low percentage shots. Monta should see and learn from that master.

Cuban: Dirk still a top-10 player

“If you look at all of the analytic stuff, he’s top 10,” Cuban said. “Not even close. Is he LeBron? No. But he’s definitely top 10.”

A sampling of Nowitzki’s ranks this season in various analytic categories: eighth in Player Impact Estimate, ninth in Player Efficiency Rating, tied for 10th in Estimated Wins Added, 11th in Value Added.

"The driving the ball is what’s missing now," said Nowitzki, as masterful a midrange shooter as has ever played the game. "I do a lot of one, two dribble, up, but I want to get back to driving some more to the basket and getting to the foul line. I don’t think I’m in ’11 shape, but definitely compared to the last two years, I feel a lot better."

From Marc steins power rankings.

"The burden is shared with Monta Ellis now, but it's a burden nonetheless. The winter focus in Dallas has shifted early to hoops yet again after the Cowboys' demise Sunday night, which means that America's Team is still stuck on one playoff win during Dirk Nowitzki's 15 years with the Mavs.

A rare 40-point game by the Dirk deserves a post in this tread. Especially enjoyable those no hesitation threes from way out. Good job, Dirk!

555 off of Havlicek fir #12
820 off of Wilkins for #11
870 off of Robertson for #10
1,106 to Olojuwon for #9

At current pace, he'll get 1,065 this season. If he can stay healthy, I find it hard to believe that he won't crack top-10 all-time this season and get into the 7-9 range before he retires.

870 off of Robertson for #10
1,106 to Olojuwon for #9

At current pace, he'll get 1,065 this season. If he can stay healthy, I find it hard to believe that he won't crack top-10 all-time this season and get into the 7-9 range before he retires.
That's setting the bar kind of low, dont you think? Lets say he gets that 1,000 more this season. Then he would just need to average 12 points per 82 games (which he'll easily do) over the next two seasons to pass Shaq for 6th. And even then, who says he stops playing after that? 30,000 is doable barring injuries. Maybe he drops to 7 or 8 in about a decade, as LeBron and Durant are the only current players I can see making an assault up the all-time scoring list.

I'm just not willing to put too much into Dirk's play two years from now. His game is one that shouldn't be slowed down by age, but he also could be injured tomorrow and retire because of it (knock on wood). Dude is 35 and has played about 60,000 minutes in the NBA on a 7'0" frame. He's been mostly healthy, but Kobe was too.

41,180 minutes of regular season play
5,281 minutes of playoff play
6,790 minutes of pre-season play
5,190 minutes of play in Europe

Yeah, I get you. Knock on wood, indeed. And Geez, THAT many more preseason minutes than playoff minutes? Is that normal for someone of his caliber? Guess you can play that up to all the early-round exits. If he'd played his career in the East, I imagine it would be much different.

Default The Art of Dirk

This is just too good to leave over at db.com.. Wow...dirk is the greatest low-post scorer in the game?!

Other post threats power into offensive fouls, stumble into travels, or fret against oncoming doubles. Nowitzki does none of the above, and as a result outclasses most of the low-post elite. Look at how he measures up in efficiency against some of the league’s other prolific post-up threats, courtesy of Synergy Sports:

Above stats regard post-up situations specifically. “PPP” is points scored per play in the post, accounting for field goals made and missed, turnovers committed, and shooting fouls drawn.

If dunks and layups were not allowed Dirk would be probably the only guy with a FG% higher than 48. Greatest low-post scorer and shooter.

Start a thread just for this, dude. Everyone should see it. Too awesome to let lost in a giant thread.

It’s nearly impossible for a player to shoot 70 percent from one spot on the floor, unless that spot is at the rim (and even in that case, it’s still nearly unheard of). Considering Nowitzki’s hottest spot is the deep left baseline, accepted NBA knowledge suggests Dirk is doing the impossible. He’s taken exactly one three from the left corner this season and 38 shots from one or two steps just in front of the line, but if he’s going to keep shooting 70 percent from that spot, I don’t think he’ll hear any complaints. And so long as he continues knocking down those jumpers — likely, considering he’s always wide open — the Mavericks’ pick and fade will continue to be perhaps the best play in basketball.

He brings up a good point about dorks low turnover rate effecting the defense. People have long questioned why his defensive on/off court numbers are so good and I'd imagine being basically the least turnover prone number one option ever is a big part of it.

If you want another way to quantify how much dirk effects an offense, dirk became something resembling the dirk we know and love in his 3rd season. Starting with that season through the championship season here are the mavs offensive ratings rank in each season. 4, 1, 1, 1, 4, 1, 2, 8, 5, 10, 8.
