Default Tipping The Cap

A new article on DallasBasketball.com may explain part of the reason for the proposed waiver of Michael Finley:

Quote:
The league's new agreement with its players will include a provision that mandates its luxury tax penalties will be applied every year, regardless of leaguewide spending levels, to teams that spend on player contracts beyond the luxury tax threshold. This is a notable difference from the old CBA, in which such penalties did not apply every year. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has confirmed to us directly that such a change will definitely be a part of the new deal.
Apparently Mark Cuban doesn't have to wonder about whether the Mavericks will be subject to the luxury tax--they will.

Here's the where the full story is:

This changes everything. In this case he has absolutely got to waive Finley or some other high salary player. He also needs to pare the dead wood off of the payroll as well. No more TAW. I also would like to see him keep Van Horn this year so that his contract can expire. That would really lower the payroll. I think he could also re-sign Van Horn fairly cheap.

If they acquire an upgrade at shooting guard waving Finley becomes a moot point.

they need not acquire another 2...that would leave them with a logjam at the 2 again...just hope Quis develops and if he's not ready this year Stack is still a valid option.

I agree with DevinHarriswillstart. We don't need another Finley-type player to average 30mpg. Just some spare that we won't have to worry about them knowning their role.
