RE:It's Oscar time...what movies/actors/directors would you nominate for an Oscar?
from what I've seen:
actor: Carrery - ESoSM, Topher Grace - In Good Company, Giamitti - Sideways, Damon - Bourne Supremacy, Caviezel - PotC
actress: Winslet - ESoSM, Swank - MDB...none that I can think of that were in their class....There are some key performances that I haven't seen yet.
movie: ESoSM, MDB, In Good Company, Sideways

Definately Jamie Foxx for Ray. Out of the movies i've watched that was the most brilliant acting I saw all of last season. Dicaprio and Don Cheadle were also good in their movies.

Unfortunately, I haven't seen Hotel Rwanda, Aviator, or Ray....There's about 6 movies that I'd like to see to complete my list for '04. From what I've heard from people that have seen a more comprehensive list, most have leaned heavily towards Cheadle. That guy is an acting genius...one of the best of our generation.

I haven't seen Sideways yet, but Paul Giamatti is a highly underrated actor. Its too bad he didn't get any recognition.

I'd love for it to go to Cheadle. Cheadle has been in films since the 80's and it's great to see that he's finally getting recoginition for his acting with his nomination. I honestly think Best Actor will probably go to Jim Carrey. Haven't his film yet but hopefully I can get a chance to rent it this weekend.

After watching Ray and Hotel Rwanda this weekend, without a doubt the Oscar should go to....... Don Cheadle. Amazing performance and amazing movie.

I hadn't seen the list of nominees before I typed that. Looking at the nominees now I think Dicaprio and Foxx.

I've seen every major movie except Sideways..
I think DiCaprio should win best actor, Clive Owen best supporting (Closer), Annette Bening best actress (Being Julia), and Natalie Portman best supporting actress (also Closer).

After watching Closer, I'm surprised that anything was nominated from that movie...

I don't see how you could NOT expect it to get nominated.. it's very original, well-written, and even better acted. It's probably my movie of the year.. that or The Aviator.

RE: It's Oscar time...what movies/actors/directors would you nominate for an Oscar?
I just saw Million Dollar Baby this weekend. I don't want to give out any spoilers, so I'll just say that its been a long time since I've felt that emotional after a movie. When the credits came up, I remained in my seat for awhile, a bit stunned by the experience.
I've only seen ESOSP and MDB, so for right now all I can say is Swank is ahead of Winslet in this category as far as I'm concerned. Fair or not, the role has just as much to do with getting an Oscar as the actual performance does - and Swank just had the more complex, more interesting part (but I liked Winslet too).
I haven't seen any of the other actresses up for it yet, but I'm sure Bening will be a strong candidate.

It will be a shame for anyone to win the award other than Swank. How many times has Winslet been nominated? 4? Titanic, ESOSP, Sense and Sensibility and ............was she nominated for Iris?
