Bush's Latest Approval Rating

Bush's Latest Approval Rating
The Bush campaign is crowing about the latest Gallup poll showing the president's 51 percent approval rating. GOP Pollster Matthew Dowd (search) says that number is almost identical with the 52 percent approval rating for Bill Clinton in 1996, and the 54 percent approval rating for President Reagan in 1984 at the same point in the race ... coincidentally, the last two presidents to get re-elected to a second term.

Both of those presidents were re-elected by wide margins. In fact, no president with an approval rating above 50 percent as late as August has ever lost a presidential election.

And if Kerry gets elected the Iraqi militia will lay down their guns? Do you honestly believe that?

Vinnie did you ever read that your man Kerry stated that he would have invaded Iraq if he was president instead of Bush. You're speaking out of both sides our you mouth and not making sense on either side.

The approval ratings are nice but the electoral college results are a little more dicey. The election can go either way right now - both candidates have to get their people out to vote to have a chance.

From Rasmussen:
Bush vs Kerry
Monday August 16, 2004--The latest Rasmussen Reports Presidential Tracking Poll shows Senator John Kerry with 48% of the vote and President George W. Bush with 47%. The Tracking Poll is updated daily by noon Eastern.

Kerry has been at 47% or 48% for ten of the last twelve days. Bush has been at 45% or 46% for eight of those days. In fact, the President has been at 45% or 46% for 22 of the last 26 days.

Republicans and Democrats are now tied on the Generic Congressional Ballot question for just the second time this year.

Rasmussen Reports Electoral College projections show Kerry with a modest lead, 228 Electoral Votes to 197. There are 113 Electoral Votes in the Toss-Up category.

Bush Approval Rating:
Monday August 16, 2004--Fifty-two percent (52%) of American voters say they approve of the way George W. Bush is performing his role as President. Forty-eight percent (48%) disapprove.

Among Republicans, the President's Approval rating is at 86%. Just 22% of Democrats give Bush their Approval along with 51% of those not affiliated with either major party.

Over the first 16 days in August, the President's Job Approval has been at 51% or 52% ten times (including eight of the last nine days). On four days, it dipped a bit lower to 50% and twice it moved up to 53%.

During 2004, the President's Approval rating has ranged from a high of 57% in early January to a low of 48% on May 17.

The important thing to note is that Kerry has narrow leads in Florida and Ohio. Nothing else matters.

Notice how Bush's numbers drift upward without doing anything. Lots of people are touting that this is a divided electorate and Kerry shouldn't have a expected a big bounce out of the convention and that Bush should not get a big bounce either. I think the truth is that Bush bottomed out at about 42 or 44 percent. Bush may very well get a big bounce out of the convention that he can hold through the election. Or not.

Kerry, on the other hand is stuck out on the campaign trail with nothing to do but talk. Again, if you buy the GOP dig on Kerry that Kerry is a far better resume than he is a candidate, then Kerry's numbers won't (or can't) improve. The debates, like Gore 4 years ago, may doom John Kerry.
