Default Cuban's latest blog entry

This is definitely a blog entry for GMC and others here. Cuban has his own (fairly complicated) rating system, not just for individual players but also for team lineups.

One thing is clear from reading that blog entry: Cuban would NOT agree with the sentiment I sometimes hear on this board that goes: "Screw matchups. Make THEM match up against US." Nope, Cuban definitely has some Mad Scientist in him!

Although his report has Dirk as #2 overall, it also says that Dirk is not in the same league defensively as Starbury, KG, Showbe, Brand, and TD, contrary to what another thread about Dirk's defense is saying. No doubt Dirk has made strides this year in defense, but there is still a long way to go on that side of the ball.

MavsRule, you're reading those stats differently than I am. By my read Dirk's defensive rating for the season is -6.5. Out of the top 10 only TD (-8.45) and Pierce (-8.58) are significantly better than Dirk. Marbury's at -5.96, KG's at -6.41, Kobe's at -6.06, and Brand is at -6.79.

Regardless of the stats, I don't think that Dirk is among the top defensive players in the league. However, I do believe that he's moved past being adequate into being an above average defender.

Dirk for the year is -6.50, but for the last 8 games is only -0.68. Therefore, he is extremely inconsistent in his defense. He had picked his defensive intensity up at the beginning of the year, but has been sluffing off since. That kind of defense won't get him recognized league wide unless he brings it every single night. And yes Murph, I agree he is an above average defender who has not reached his potential.

Whether or not you're right, this statement is just ignorant. That is, unless you can direct me to the database containing all the game-by-game defensive ratings for every player in the league that would allow you to make an informed judgement about how variable Dirk's play has been relative to other players.

The fact is, every player's stats are going to have a significant amount of variability on a game-by-game basis. Dirk is not alone in this, and the mere fact that Dirk's defensive impact over the last 8 games differs from his impact for the season as a whole is one of the most worthless pieces of statistical copy you could possibly hope to include in a reasoned argument. I'm not trying to argue that Dirk's defense (or offense) has been a known commodity night in and night out. But there's simply no justification in these stats for the extreme nature of your characterization of his play on the defensive end.

I guess your opinion is better than Cuban's and the whole Maverick's coaching staff. Cuban probably set up the parameters that he wanted to see in these stats, NAMELY THE LAST 3,5 AND 8 GAMES. So if it is no value to you, please don't call the statement ignorant. And I would think your are in a small minority.

Perhaps I should have been more specific and said that the mere fact that Dirk's defensive impact over the last 8 games differs from his impact for the season as a whole is one of the most worthless pieces of statistical copy you could possibly hope to include as the basis of the argument you tried to make about Dirk's supposedly extreme inconsistency on the defensive end. Didn't mean to imply that his performance at any point in the season was irrelevant.

it is part political & part mavericks general discussion since it is done by Cuban, for the mavericks fans and this is relevant to his blog entry. Thanks for moving it (edited by a Dallas-Mavs.com moderator)

Yes, it has Cuban's name in it. That is as close to being Maverick related as it got. The article had no information on the Mavericks.

And watch the language, and name calling.

Just so you know, vinnepointe, I was the one who moved your thread, not u2sarajevo. It was a political thread, not a Mavs or basketball-related thread. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.
