Default Artest And Bibby Being Traded? More On Cuban's UFL

Quote:
Marty Mac's World: Pettrie's Biggest Decision Concerns Artest, Bibby

Certainly, the Kings' search for a new coach is a crucial decision.

Yet basketball president Geoff Petrie's most important calls will be what to do, if anything, with small forward Ron Artest and/or point guard Mike Bibby.

After speaking with several people associated with the team, it seems a done deal that one of them will be traded. Petrie said to comment on the possibility of trading both players would be only speculation at this point. Trading the team's second- and third-leading scorers (Artest, then Bibby) puts the high beam on this being a totally new squad in the fall.

Well, Mr. Petrie, it's all good to trade either of these guys. You can trade both of them. Just don't trade them to the same squad because neither really wants to play with the other. There are personality differences between the two, but generally speaking, Artest stands for defense and Bibby is more offensive-oriented. Artest also wants to be heavily involved in the offense and is the better all-around player, but also the one with the most uncontrollable issues.

Now, it's not impossible for them to play together again next season, but that's where the strength of the new coach comes into the mix.

The coach would have a heck of a selling job convincing two talented but hard-headed players to erase any past discord between them and buy into the new program. There is no more difficult part of coaching than ego-massaging. And the new coach's middle names had better be Sigmund and Freud to get this pair on the same page.

Bibby's shooting percentage has decreased in each of the past four seasons. He is most effective when playing off a strong post and passing presence. It's difficult to remember Bibby averaged 8.1 and 8.4 assists with the Vancouver (now Memphis) Grizzlies in the two seasons before he joined the Kings in 2001-02.

Maybe putting the ball back into his hands instead of the frontcourt personnel will become a byproduct of the coaching change. Then again, that byproduct could be an address change. But we do now all realize there was only one Vlade Divac and one Chris Webber, and they both are history around these parts.

Maloofs approached about football league

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is looking into taking on the NFL with the proposed United Football League.

Kings co-owner Gavin Maloof said recently his family had been approached a couple of months ago, but said thanks, but no thanks.

"Yes, we were contacted," Maloof said, "but we've been there and done that.

"We owned the Birmingham Fire in the World League of American Football in the early '90s when Sacramento had the Surge. Trying to compete with the NFL is a tremendous undertaking, but if anybody can pull it off, it would probably be Cuban."

For this team? Terry. Overall they are pretty similar though.

I'm sorry, the article was too long.

What's happening? Artest is playing in the UFL?

Florida Sports Buzz
FLORIDA SPORTS BUZZ
Heat might seek Artest, Lewis
By BARRY JACKSON
bjackson@MiamiHerald.com

With the Heat intent on improving the roster at point guard, small forward, or both, here's some of the early buzz:

• Several NBA people close to the Heat expect Miami will explore acquiring Sacramento's Ron Artest or impending Seattle free agent Rashard Lewis -- two elite 27-year-old small forwards. But it's highly questionable if the Heat has enough to satisfy the Kings or Sonics.

The Heat has not made a trade offer for Artest, but discussions with the Kings are expected, an official with one of the teams said. Two officials said Pat Riley isn't deterred by Artest's past off-court issues.

The Kings will consider moving Artest but don't feel compelled. An official in contact with Kings management said Sacramento isn't enamored with Miami's available assets, which could require a third team's inclusion. Artest (18.8 points, 6.5 rebounds last season) is due $7.8 million for next season and has an $8.45 million player option for '08-09.

Although the Heat loves Lewis' skills, there's some skepticism internally about whether Miami -- which is above the salary cap -- would have enough to interest Seattle in a sign-and-trade. Numerous teams covet him, including Orlando -- which will have lots of cap space if it doesn't sign Darko Milicic -- Houston and New York. Seattle says it wants to keep Lewis, but the expected drafting of Kevin Durant could change that.

Lewis (22.4 points, 6.6 rebounds in '06-07) could get a six-year deal worth as much as $110 million, meaning a first-year salary in the $15 million range. According to salary-cap rules, the Heat would need to send the Sonics contracts within 25 percent of his first-year salary. The Heat likely would be willing to exceed the tax threshold slightly for an All-Star-caliber player.

Among the Heat's pieces that could be offered in trades: James Posey or Jason Kapono (if either agrees to a sign-and-trade), Antoine Walker (the Heat isn't optimistic about moving his two more guaranteed years, worth $8.5 million and $9.3 million), Udonis Haslem (due $6 million in '07-08), Michael Doleac ($3.1 million), Jason Williams (one year left at $8.9 million), Dorell Wright ($1.7 million) and draft picks.

Posey's agent, Mark Bartelstein, said Tuesday the Heat has expressed an interest in re-signing Posey but hasn't made an offer. The Heat's free agent small forward options, beyond Posey and Kapono, include Morris Peterson, Grant Hill, Ruben Patterson, Jalen Rose, Desmond Mason and Matt Barnes. Charlotte's Gerald Wallace will command more than Miami's cap exception (which will top $5 million).

• Whether Williams returns as the uncontested starter remains in serious question. The Heat believes Philadelphia probably won't trade Andre Miller, and Detroit free agent Chauncey Billups is unrealistic from Miami's perspective. The Heat likes Sacramento's Mike Bibby, but his salary ($13.5 million and $14.5 million the next two years) and subpar defense are deterrents. A Sacramento Bee columnist wrote Tuesday that it ''seems a done deal'' that Bibby or Artest will be traded.

Also on Miami's radar: former Heat guard Mike James, who parlayed a terrific season in Toronto into a four-year, $25 million deal last summer with Minnesota, where he disappointed.

The Heat likes Milwaukee free agent Mo Williams, but that would require a sign-and-trade, and the Bucks want to keep him. Second-tier affordable free agent options include Steve Blake, Jason Hart, Jannero Pargo and Chucky Atkins.

CHATTER

• We hear the NBA Players Association filed a grievance on behalf of Posey and Walker, who want to collect an undisclosed amount of money they were fined by the Heat when they were deactivated for four games in early January for exceeding the team's body-fat requirement. A hearing with arbitrator Calvin Sharpe will be held this summer. Bartelstein, who represents both players, said ''there are no hard feelings'' and it won't affect Posey's interest in re-signing. No comment from the Heat.

• Free agent Eddie Jones said Riley indicated ''he's very interested in me.'' But there has been no formal bid, and Miami likely wouldn't offer more than the $1.1 million veteran's minimum. Jones said, ''I love being here,'' but is noncommittal about returning.

Wow some people...how can any1 ask if Jet is more valuable than Bibby...this just goes to show how some people take Jet for granted....Bibby has not been heard from in years..and Jet has helped us get to the playoffs and Finals and you ask who is more valuable..even if Bibby was on this team..he just doesnt have the personality that Jet does and that we need.

110 million!!!!?? I would LOVE to have him in Dallas, but has he even made the all-star team. Damn.

A lineup that includes Wade, Artest, Shaq would be the most physical in the NBA--scary.

Before JET came to Dallas, Bibby was the one willing his team and advancing in the playoffs.
If you think JET is vastly superior than Bibby, then I don't know what to tell you.

I am not saying he is all that superior, but I think he is much better for this team and has the attitude that we need. ( like hitting big shots). Bibby is good, but he disappeared over the last few years since Webber left.

Change in team outlook: +9.3 ppg, +5.6 rpg, and +2.1 apg.

Successful Scenario
Due to Dallas, Houston, and Sacramento being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. Dallas, Houston, and Sacramento had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Dallas: Moves Terry for Battier and a backup PG. Dirks backup is here.
Houston: Gets Bibby who already knows Adelmans offense and keeps Yao/McGrady.
Sac: Gets Terry and Howard to break up some of their issues. (I doubt Sac would do this due to contract lengths) Terry, Martin, Artest, JuHoward, Miller would be OK, I think.

Battier should be starting somewhere IMO, he would be a waste on the bench.

Howard/Battier/Dirk is better to me

We don't really need either right now but if I had to choose... Artest any day of the week despite character issues. He's just the better basketball player and great defensive players are a lot harder to come by.
