Al Qaeda’s allies in Somalia are on the verge of seizing the secular government’s last stronghold - opening the possibility of a “new Afghanistan” to shelter America’s enemies.

Somalia is at a critical juncture. In the coming days, the world will learn whether the transitional federal government is strong enough to fend off the terrorists’ assault. If it fails, al-Qaeda will win its first countrywide safe haven since 9/11.

The radical Islamic Courts Union (ICU), a Taliban-like group linked to Osama bin Laden, seized the Somali capital of Mogadishu in June and has steadily gained control of strategic cities throughout the country since then. Its main rival, the secular transitional federal government, is now confined to the south-central Somali city of Baidoa.

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) - Somalia's Islamic militants Saturday called on foreign Muslim fighters to join their holy war against Ethiopian troops after days of fighting killed hundreds of people and threatened to engulf this volatile region.

``Muslims are brothers and help each other,'' Sheik Yusuf Indahaadde, national security chairman for the Council of Islamic Courts, said in the capital, Mogadishu. ``We have a right to call our brothers and sisters to help us in this holy war,'' he said.

The Islamic forces have declared they want to bring the country under Quranic rule and vowed to drive out troops from neighboring Ethiopia, a largely Christian nation that is providing military support to Somalia's U.N.-backed government. Ethiopia denies its forces are fighting, saying it has sent only military trainers.

The Ethiopians did us a big favor by dislodging the Islamists from Mogadishu. Once on the run, the US could bring all of its technological assets on line to track them, and the Air Force waited long enough for all of them to run into the trap. The Navy positioned the USS Eisenhower in the waters nearby Somalia just in case it finds even more targets to strike.

That hasn't stopped the Ethiopians, either. Their forces have surrounded an al-Qaeda base and may have overrun it by the time you read this post. Between the three forces, including those loyal to the Somalian transitional government, AQ in Africa is about to take a huge blow, perhaps even a fatal defeat.

It may have taken us a long time, but we do not forget. Let's hope that our attack took out these high-value targets and plenty of their followers to boot. (via Hot Air)

Hmm isnt it amazing that it takes a world power and Etheopia to defeat a couple thousand fighters. Once again America gets involved where it shouldnt and you wonder why people hate it.

Yea I'm sure they would rather be over-run by a bunch of talibans. Let's see last I hear the somalis were dancing and singing once the islamists were en route.

So what is it, that you feel the islamists are getting picked on by the big-bad ethiopian army. You also think the Somalians are happy about a bunch of insane islamists running around beheading folks for going to soccer games?

Or maybe you don't think the ethiopians have any right to attack the islamists when they had already stated their plan to extend into ethiopia.

the Ethiopians did not have the right to attack and the US definetly didnt. Idk who the Somalis would be better under, but i can tell you that its just another mess that the US created a while ago and then never fixed it...hmmm kinda like Iraq

So if the legal government of somalia asked the ethiopians for help, that's not "legal". Not that you have a clue what happened, if you hundreds of thousands dead in Iraq is any indication of your literacy.

In 1978, the moral authority of the Somali government collapsed with many Somalis becoming disillusioned with life under military dictatorship. The regime in the 1980s weakened as the Cold War drew to a close and Somalia's strategic importance was diminished. The government became increasingly totalitarian, and resistance movements, encouraged by Ethiopia for its own strategic interests, sprang up across the country, eventually leading to civil war in 1991.

In 1991, first insurgent forces led by Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, leader of the (SSDF), and President Ali Mahdi Mohamed was unrecognised as the interim president by some factions. The same year, the northern portion of the country declared its independence as Somaliland; although de facto independent and relatively stable compared to the tumultuous south, it has not been recognized by any foreign government. In the period 1991-1992, a split in the southern United Somali Congress, which led efforts to unseat Barre, caused an escalation in the civil war, especially in the Mogadishu area.

Following the failure of United Nations' Operation Restore Hope and beginning in 1993, a two-year UN effort (primarily in the south) was able to alleviate famine conditions. The UN contingent was at times led by American troops, 18 of whom were killed in a raid in Mogadishu where two helicopters (Supers 61&64) were shot down (as portrayed in the film "Black Hawk Down").

The UN withdrew in Operation United Shield by 3 March 1995, having suffered significant casualties, and the rule of government has not yet been restored.

Yet another secession from Somalia took place in the northeastern region. The self-governing state took the name Puntland after declaring "temporary" independence in 1998, with the intention that it would participate in any Somali reconciliation to form a new central government.

no, that is not accurate.

the actions by ethiopia were certainly condoned and supported by the usa, as well they should. the situation in somalia was not good, had not been good for almost two decades, and yet when the africans themselves address the problems it's the usa that is criticized?

the involvement of ethiopia, of kenya and other countries to extend order into the chaos that is somalia is a very positive trun of events. first it may reach the goal of removing the rule of warlords, second it removes the possibility of the lawless land from being used by enemies of the usa, and last it is one of the first times that africans themselves work to better a neighbor rather than take advantage of a neighbor's problems.

the area wants peace and stability. this is their best chance, so why would anyone not support the initiative?
