It sure does add up. His step back is effective enough so that defenders have to scramble to get out on him. When he has that level of unpredictability, they lunge forward or get their feet together to contest and he's gone past them. The problem for defenders is that once he gets around, he keeps them on his hip and worst case scenario is a floater in the lane. I'm perfectly fine with him taking step backs in the natural flow of the game.

The only time I do not want him taking them is most late game situations, and especially from laziness. Now if it's tied and you have last shot in a situation like vs LA in game 4(?) then that's more acceptable.
