I’m not too excited about Bamba. I fear he will be too light to be a defensive anchor at C.

I think it’s more likely he’s Otto Porter than Marion. Marion was a great rebounder. Hall of Famer. Bridges was 6 rebs per 40. Kawhi was the best player on a championship team

And everybody keeps bringing up age in the Bridges-Leonard comparison, but it took 5 seasons for Kawhi to pop... They're both late-bloomers.

Yeah, Mikal Bridges wasn’t the best player on a championship team. Wait, yes he was.

And Bridges was 6 reb because he was a 3/D SG last year even though he guarded everyone from PG to PF. The year before he showed dominant driving. In two years he’s been dominant in lots of offensive skills including shooting the three at 44%. Both years he was the most dominant defender in the NCAA. Dominant defender and shooter that can also drive and run the baseline without the ball? That’s a total player.

Bagley may be putting up better offensive numbers, but if you add offense to defense and do an average, Bridges could be the most talented overall player in the draft, 22 or not

Guys, I really like Mikel Bridges. A lot. Just stating the obvious: it’s much more likely he’s Otto Porter than Kawhi or even Marion. Not a reason not to pick him. If you think he’s that guy take him #1!

And he was (arguably) the best player on a college championship team. So was Eddie Pinckney

If his back clears with no issues from medical staff then he's really hard to pass up at 5.

Or maybe they are too gun shy after their last *cough* SF with injuries they acquired turned out so well, it's wishful thinking I'll admit. If his back checks out he legitimately could go as high as 2 so I won't be surprised. I hope it checks out just because it gives us more options whether he goes before us or not.

If the Mavs determine that Trae Young is the bpa at 5 then should they take him? I say yes. They are too far away from contention to worry about fit.

He wouldn’t be the BPA at 15th in my opinion.

Then again, by saying that aloud, I’ve now cursed us to draft him

Not the point. Finley was quoted as saying they haven’t even decided what position they were drafting yet. It was probably just a remark meaning that there was no point in even speculating this early, but I hope they don’t go in to the draft with a set position in mind. I personally think Trae Young has star potential.

Actually I'm getting more of a Mikal Bridges vibe. All the big men are somewhat projects that might not be able to help instantly. Bridges can. So I wouldn't be surprised if the Mavs took him and then went after a big in FA. I'm not saying it's the best scenario long-term, but if you really want the best shot at the playoffs in 18/19?

I don’t think adding Bridges gets us out of the lottery — we’re still a #1 scorer away from even talking about a playoff spot, and none of the realistic FAs on the market fit the bill. That’s why I see MPJ as the only guy beyond Ayton/Doncic/Bagley who could get this team turned around in just one season.

I keep seeing people saying comments to the effect of “tanking didn’t pay off for the Mavs”. I find this to be a ludicrous statement.

We have the 5th pick! Most likely options will be JJJ, Bagley, Bamba, Bridges, or MPJ. All have viable superstar potential.

I get it. We held out hope for the number 1 spot. But I have been saying this for some time. There is a strong argument to be made for 6-7 players in this draft. It’s a great draft. And just like last season where I had DSJ as my number 2 coveted player (monk was #1 for me), I think it’s very possible that a similar situation occurs this year. The guys taken 3-6 are completely up in the air with no right answer. Team fit, development, and culture will be the biggest difference makers imo.

Bamba gives up 50 pounds and 7 inches to Shawn Bradley. He appears to move at about the same speed. I’m not seeing it.

This I agree with... by tanking we have ourselves a better floor for a pick. After all the grading of teeth around here many of us were worried about ending up with pick 7-9 . Could have been better but five is still high enough to get someone with a high ceiling

How is it not the point if we draft 5th and he 100% isn’t the best player available?

Sounds like we disagree on our evaluation of Young— I personally don’t think you take him until at least 12 unless you are desperate for a PG. You obviously think he’s a top 5 player. I do not— I think at best he’s a top 12-15 prospect, meaning that at 5, there is absolutely no way he’s still the best player available at that draft position.

we all got too greedy after the last two weeks of the regular season when we moved from 5-6 to 3-4 and also won the coinflip against the Hawks.

Back in march everyone was more than fine with picking at 5

If he choice is between Bamba and MPJ, roll the dice on MPJ IMO. You don’t win in this league without having at least two guys who can consistently score 1-on-1. Porter has that natural scoring ability probably moreso than anyone in this draft. Even if you have to redshirt him, take him.

The Ringer has Bagley falling to 6th. Hey, ya never know.

https://nbadraft.theringer.com/?_ga=...691.1509853124

The only two players that I think we have no chance at are Ayton and Doncic. Everyone else could fall.

What a garbage mock.

I trust DX and they say the Hawks love Doncic and Bagley. And no way the Grizz taking Bamba

There's something to be said for this... you need a go to guy who can create a shot for themselves or for others towards the end of games or as the shot clock/game clock is running low. DSJ can do that of course but having more than one guy who can create helps a lot. Barnes can get off a shot but he looks to be more of a dribble-dribble, pull up guy like Finley used to be.

You bring up another point worth discussing... I don't know the nature of the recovery for what he has, but what if MPJ's back is not good enough for a full recovery this coming year, BUT by year 2 he's all good and back to where he was on track for previously? Philly waiting on Ben Simmons for a year looks like it's worked out pretty well. I'm conflicted about potentially sucking again for a year vs. missing out on a potentially elite level offensive player.

1 - Suns - Ayton - they are in love with him and have all but committed
2 - Kings - Doncic - Divacs loves the white kids, particularly from Europe. No way they pass on him.
3- Atlanta - Bagley (60%) or Young (40%) - Atl needs offense. They'll either draft Bagley or Young. They are reportedly shopping Schroder so they may opt to draft Young, which would make Bagley available for us at the 5.
4 - Memphis - Jackson - they would have opted out of the defensively limited Bagley to pursue a guy with a high motor and high defensive potential anyway, so they get their man in Jackson

Mavs choose from
Porter - has a Kevin Durant/Paul George upside, but some concerns (some of which can be addressed in workouts)

Bamba - defensive potential is off the charts. His offense is going to be a challenge, but should get at least PnP and oop opportunities from Smith

Bridges - All around best player. May never average 20ppg, but will bring fire, defense, energy, leadership, and a surprisingly versatile offensive presence. He can do what Matthews was supposed to. He can play SG or SF at the next level while defending three positions (PG-SF). He's ready to contribute now.

Bagley - KG without the defense. Physical specimen with versatile offense. Just like Smith Jr., he has the body to play defense. Just doesn't have any idea how to play it, but may be able to learn. Only available if Hawks draft Young and Grizz go Jackson.

Mavs have some fascinating players to choose from.

I agree with DH, I think outside of Ayton and Doncic we have a chance at anyone else falling to 5. If we take Bridges at 5 I won't love it, but I won't hate it if they have him as BPA. I'll trust them until I see otherwise. However if they take him simply because he can come in now and be better in year 1 over these others just because we want to "compete" again... then I will be upset. That is way too short sighted for a team that is drafting in the top 5 for a reason. I hope all Fin meant by his comments were that we hope we get a player to build with and was just reinforcing how we don't plan on being here again. IMO even as big of a project as JJJ is, he's going to play if hes a top 5 pick and healthy at some point in year 1 sooner rather than later.

Well I know UD is going to put a voodoo curse on me, but a safe pick is Wendell Carter. He would likely provide more right away versus Bamba or JJJ, and does most things well. Definitely a Rick guy. I think his stock is going to rise with how Horford is playing for Boston. Of all of our comparisons, I'd say he is as close to Horford talent-wise as you'll get. Low ceiling though is unavoidable. Underrated passer.

I just feel like too many of us take for granted what defensive big man upgrade would do for the team. Someone that is consistent unlike Noel.

Its really hard to pass up on MPJ watching film. His shot is so smooth feels like he could get 20 pts a night effortlessly. But then again, I dont want to see him or Barnes at 4.

Bagley or JJJ will be at 5 too. I like Mikal but it doesnt move the team much next season. Hes possibly a good side piece but then we're still looking for a number 1 scorer again without a frontcourt presence.

Im torn.

I'm getting more comfortable with the 5th pick, seeing as it will be one of Bagley, Bmba, Jackson, Porter Jr, or Bridges. I'd be happy with any of those guys.

Some have mentioned a good point that I have not thought long and hard on...this team could possibly use a 2nd scoring threat even more than a defensive anchor piece. We could argue they are our top 2, interchangeable needs. That would lead me to narrow that list down to Bamba, Jackson, and MPJ. Again, ecstatic to add any of those young players to the Mavs roster.

Carter is a great pick for a team in the #7-9 range but hell, you dont take him in this amazing draft at #5

I could see Carter being the best big from this draft when it's all said and done. He has the skill. He has the size. The only question is whether he can run with the big dogs in the modern NBA. I wouldn't bet against him, and I actually think his game is more similar to Joel Embiid's than Bamba's.

Since Atlanta skipped Dallas for the third pick, Dallas now owns the third pick in the second round 33rd overall.
