Blackman back on Mavs' bench
Blackman back on Mavs' bench
Familiar face moving from TV, development staff to assistant coach
07:51 PM CDT on Friday, August 26, 2005
By DAVID MOORE / The Dallas Morning News
The leading scorer in Mavericks history is now one of its assistant coaches.
Rolando Blackman has traded in his job as the team's TV analyst for a spot on the bench. The move, which had been expected for some time, was announced Friday afternoon as Avery Johnson completed his staff. Blackman joins Joe Prunty as the newest members of the Mavericks coaching staff.
Blackman spent 11 seasons with the club and had his number retired in 2000. The four-time All-Star spent five years on the Mavericks player development staff, the last two as director.
"Ro shares in our vision, but more than anything, he's very loyal," Johnson said. "He wants to help bring a championship to Dallas."
Prunty spent nine years in San Antonio, the last three as an advance scout and assistant coach. Prunty was a high school coach in San Diego who worked his way up in the Spurs organization after starting as an assistant video coordinator.
Assistants Del Harris and Larry Riley, who re-signed with the club this summer after his contract expired, will retain their spots on the bench. Charlie Parker remains a part of Johnson's staff but will not be on the bench.

Rolondo is a good addition. He knows what it takes to get to the WCF.

RE:Blackman back on Mavs' bench
From Dallas' official website:
DALLAS (August 26, 2005) --The Dallas Mavericks announced today the team has signed Joe Prunty and Rolando Blackman as assistant coaches to Avery Johnson, who will begin his second season as Mavericks head coach. Del Harris and Larry Riley complete the coaching staff. As per club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
“We are excited to add two solid coaches to our staff”, said Head Coach Avery Johnson. “I have known Joe since he was with the San Antonio Spurs. We both share the same beliefs in how to win a championship because we won one together in 1999. His championship experience and energy are great assets to Dallas.”
Prunty enters his first season with the Mavericks after spending nine seasons with the San Antonio Spurs, the last three as an advance scout/assistant coach. He was a part of three NBA Championships with the Spurs (1999, 2003, 2005). The Sunnyvale, Calif., native started his coaching career at University of San Diego High School where he coached the Lakers' Luke Walton. After a short stint at St. Augustine High School, he joined the Spurs in 1996 as an assistant video coordinator. During the summer of 2000, Prunty was promoted to assistant coach/video coordinator before becoming an advance scout/assistant coach in 2002.
Rolando Blackman
“We are also thrilled to promote Rolando Blackman, one of the all-time Maverick and NBA greats, who brings five years of coaching experience on the player development side,” said Johnson. “Ro also shares in our vision but more than anything he is very loyal. He wants to help bring a championship to Dallas.”
Blackman has spent five seasons on the Mavericks player development staff and two years as the program's director. The Mavericks all-time leading scorer will join the Dallas coaching staff after spending the 2004-05 season as a Mavericks television analyst. Blackman was a four-time All-Star during his 13 seasons in the NBA and appears in the Top 10 in 18 different statistical categories in Mavericks history. He has also served as an assistant coach to the bronze-medal winning German National team at the 2002 World Basketball Championships in Indianapolis.

RE:Blackman back on Mavs' bench
Glad it was Ro and not Aguirre.
Aguirre's awkward campaigining for a position with the Mavs makes more sense now that Larry Brown is with the NYKs--Zeke must've told him to that he should get out and find another gig, because nothing would be guaranteed once Brown got to town.
Zeke takes care of his friends like that.
