Default Dirk Wants Changes In German BBall

Dirk Nowitzki has criticised Germany's young basketball players, but added that they should have more chances to play in the German BBL league.

"The kids just don't get a chance in the BBL because there are too many foreigners blocking them," said Nowitzki to the Passauer Neue Presse daily newspaper.

"But some of them are spoiled. They come in with an agent at 16 and would rather get 5000 euros to sit on the bench instead of playing for less money in the second league or regional league and work their way up."

The league - which can only boast that 10% of its participants are German - begins this week. Nowitzki believes that change is needed if talented youth is to improve the fortunes of the national team.

"It's really important that we get young talents to come up, especially in comparison with other countries," he said.

"Italy and Spain had a lot of young talent who watched and learned from those teams' stars at the FIBA World Championship. But we don't really have anyone else coming up."

Germany finished eighth in the 2006 championships and could find it difficult to reach the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games on current form.

"We have to be honest, we could have finished fifth, but the top four was not possible. The teams were just better this year. We just have to recognise that," Nowitzki added.

"This year showed how difficult it will be [to qualify for the Olympics]. Only the top two teams qualify directly."

"work their way up"

sounds like the youths of america could use that too...instead of getting shoe contracts before they play a single minute in the nba.

Well said by Dirk, it makes sense that they should work their way up, that's why I like the minor leagues that baseball has.
