Default Gold Cup USA 2005 (only for "ignorants")

It already started. Not a high level tournament but the main attraction -again- is to know who will be the champion between the best of the area, USA or Mexico.

2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup™ kicks off tomorrow in Miami

5.7.05 - A doubleheader of games that will see Colombia face Panama and Trinidad & Tobago play Honduras in Miami’s Orange Bowl Stadium marks the official kickoff of the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup™ on Wednesday, 6 July.

This CONCACAF Gold Cup™, the eight edition in all, promises to be the biggest yet with more games taking place in more cities than ever before. Download Match Schedule

Speaking at a Miami media conference earlier today to mark the opening of the event, CONCACAF President Jack Warner hailed the 2005 tournament as the most important so far, and pointed to the pivotal role the Gold Cup has played in raising standards of football in the CONCACAF region to the point where CONCACAF teams regularly have a significant impact on the World stage.

He said, “Since its inception in 1991, it has given our many nations increased opportunity for serious competition, higher standards of play and thus, apart from the pride that comes with being among the best in our region, far better preparation for going out into the wide world and showing off our abilities in the FIFA World Cup and other world competitions.”

President Warner was joined at the Media Conference by coaches of the four national teams playing their Group A first round games in Miami.

The 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup™ will consist of three groups of four teams for the first round with the top two from each group, along with the best two third-placed teams, progressing to the quarterfinals for a total of 10 doubleheaders from 6-17 July throughout six stadiums in the USA.

The quarterfinal matches will take place on Saturday, 16 July (two games in Foxboro), and Sunday, 17 July (two games in Houston). The 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup™ semifinals and final is scheduled for Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Thursday, 21 July and Sunday, 24 July, respectively.

CONCACAF ANNOUNCES UNICEF PARTNERSHIP
CONCACAF President Jack Warner used the opportunity at opening 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup™ press conference to announce that CONCACAF will partner with UNICEF and work closely on using football to bring real improvements to the lives of children across the CONCACAF region.

He said, “Football has the power to be a tremendous force for good in the lives of young people and, in working with UNICEF, we aim to make sure we are doing everything we can to use the power of football to build a better future for children across the CONCACAF region.”

CONCACAF and UNICEF are expected to make further announcements on their plans as the CONCCAF Gold Cup™ reaches NY/NJ venue for the semifinal and final games.

The USA had a bit of a slow start against Cuba, but they showed up when it counted.

Mexico should have an advantage having just competed in the european tournament (almost making the final...). All in all a very good showing by the Americas against europe.

Hurricane Dennis hits CONCACAF Gold Cup™

8.7.05 - The advancing Force 4 Hurricane Dennis has caused a 24 hour delay in each of the next two game days of the CONCACAF Gold Cup™ Group A at Miami's Orange Bowl.
The seriousness of the storm, which has already caused havoc in parts of the Caribbean, especially Cuba, led to State and City of Miami authorities ordering many emergency procedures, including the closing of the Orange Bowl.

The doubleheader scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday, 9 July) at the Orange Bowl will now be played on Sunday, 10 July with Honduras vs. Colombia at 19:00 and then Panama vs. Trinidad & Tobago at 21:00. The matches scheduled for Monday (11 July), will now go ahead on Tuesday, (12 July) with Colombia vs. Trinidad & Tobago at 17:00 and then Honduras vs. Panama at 19:00.

CONCACAF General Secretary Chuck Blazer said: "We are sorry for the fans, both at the Orange Bowl and in front of their TV sets, who were anticipating the Gold Cup games on their scheduled days but we understand full well why the decision was made. It is better to be safe than sorry."

This is the first time since 1998, when El Nino caused a postponement in Los Angeles, that weather has interfered with the Gold Cup.

S. Africa Defeats Mexico 2-1 in 1st Round Sat Jul 9, 4:39 AM ET

Defending champion Mexico lost a CONCACAF Gold Cup game for the first time since 2002, dropping a 2-1 decision to South Africa in a first-round game on Friday night.

Philip Evans and Elrio Van Heerden scored for South Africa, which dealt Mexico just its fourth loss in the competition since the tournament began in 1997.

In the late game, Guatemala's Carlos Ruiz scored three goals but it wasn't enough. Playing with 10 men for 75 minutes, Jamaica beat Guatemala 4-3.

Luton Shelton, Ricardo Fuller, Andy Williams and Jermaine Hue scored for Jamaica, which shares first place in Group C with South Africa.

South Africa won with a roster devoid of its top players. Only six participated in World Cup qualifying, and two starters made their first international appearances.

Evans scored his first international goal in the 28th minute. Lebohang Mokoena headed Van Heerden's corner kick to an unmarked Evans, who headed the ball off the inside of the right post from 3 yards.

Van Heerden, who plays for Denmark's FC Copenhagen, added his first international goal in the 41st minute.

Siyabango Nomvete sent a crossing pass from the right side of the penalty area on a counterattack. Van Heerden slid, deflecting the ball between goalkeeper Jose de Jesus Corona and the left post from 5 yards.

Francisco Rodriguez scored in the 83rd minute on a 7-yard header off Luis Ernesto Perez's right-wing cross.

Mexico had two shots hit posts. Rafael Marquez Lugo's 14-yard volley ricocheted off the base of the right post in the 25th minute, and Omar Bravo's diving header hit the left post in the 76th minute.

In the nightcap, Jamaica held a 2-1 lead when defender Claude Davis received a red card in the 15th minute for tripping Ruiz from behind.

Shelton scored in the third minute and Fuller in the fifth to put Jamaica ahead 2-0. Ruiz, one of FC Dallas' leading forwards, converted a penalty kick in the 11th minute.

Jamaica's Andy Williams, who plays for Real Salt Lake, extended the lead to 3-1 with a penalty kick in the 45th minute. Ruiz narrowed the deficit with a 7-yard header in first-half stoppage time.

Hue gave Jamaica a 4-2 lead with an 18-yard shot in the 57th minute. Ruiz ended the scoring on a 21-yard shot in the 87th minute.

Donovan has been stepping it up BIG TIME for the U.S. lately. Two goals late against Cuba including that incredible free kick and one against Canada as well.

EL TRI won easily, but it's not enough yet, they have to defeat Jamaica. The US remaining one game, after two wins, is in quarterfinals.

The card of Donovan for the game against Costa Rica tonight:

DONOVAN ON A TEAR: With three goals in the first two games of the Gold Cup, Landon Donovan has improved upon an already red-hot streak. In addition to increasing his career tally to 25 goals, good for sole possession of third place on the all-time U.S. list, he has also:

• scored goals in four consecutive games, tying the U.S. MNT's all-time record streak (shared now with William Looby, 1955; Brian McBride, 2001; and Eddie Johnson, 2005)
• upped his career goal total in the Gold Cup to eight goals, now tied for second place with Brian McBride and one behind Eric Wynalda
• increased his team-leading point total to 16 in just eight appearances on the year (6 goals, 4 assists)
• collected more career points than caps (69 points, 66 caps). No other player in U.S. history with a minimum of 20 caps has more points than caps

The game was a tough one, the Costa Rican GK was very much on his game, keeping the ball out of the net. A very physical game, now it's on to the quarterfinals.
--------------------------------------------------------------
U.S. ties Costa Rica in Gold Cup, 0-0

12:50 AM CDT on Wednesday, July 13, 2005

Associated Press

FOXBORO, Mass. – The United States will head into the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals without its perfect record and without its most experienced defender, too.

Frankie Hejduk picked up a yellow card for taking a dive in the final minutes of a 0-0 tie against Costa Rica on Tuesday night, a move that will keep him out of the quarterfinals for which the U.S. team had already qualified. The Americans will play a third-place team to be determined when the round-robin is completed today.

"Frankie needs to be a little bit smarter," coach Bruce Arena said. "He's got to learn from that. I don't know how much he's going to learn at this point in his career, but [it was] not smart to have to take a card there."

The United States had been 18-0-0 in first-round Gold Cup play, but the lackluster tie was still good enough to give the Americans first place in their round-robin group.

The Americans and Costa Ricans finished the round-robin 2-0-1, but the U.S. team gets the easier quarterfinal matchup after scoring six goals and allowing only one; Costa Rica scored four goals against one allowed.

Costa Rica will play Saturday at Gillette Stadium against Honduras, which beat Panama, 1-0, on Tuesday to win its group.

"I think we played an outstanding defensive game today," said Costa Rica coach Alexander Guimaraes, whose team lost a World Cup qualifier to the Americans, 3-0, last month.

"I am very happy with the improvement that we have made in that [area]."

Mexico beat Jamaica in Gold Cup
14 July 2005
by AP

Mexico defeated Jamaica 1-0 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Wednesday through a goal from Alberto Medina.
The victory means Mexico finished first in Group C with a 2-1 record ahead of South Africa and Jamaica side, who advance as one of the best third-placed teams. In the quarter-finals, Mexico will play Colombia, South Africa will face Panama, and Jamaica will meet the United States.

Mexico, the four-times Gold Cup winners, scored the game's only goal after 18 minutes when Medina struck from 15 yards. Captain Jared Borgetti received a yellow card in the second half, however, which rules him out of the quarter-final.

Somuch for that USA-Mexico match, Mexico isn't going past the quarters....the second Columbia goal was a very fortunate strike, but nevertheless it counts.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Colombia beat Mexico to reach Gold Cup semis

(updates after Panama win)

HOUSTON, Texas, July 17 (Reuters) - Colombia reached the CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-finals with a surprise 2-1 win over holders Mexico thanks to Abel Aguilar's 74th-minute strike on Sunday.

Aguilar's goal came 10 minutes after a resilient, yet often disorganised, Mexican team equalised in an absorbing match.

However, it was the way Deportivo Cali midfielder Aguilar scored that caused Mexico's blushes.

Catching Moises Munoz well off his line, Aguilar sent a 35-metre chip over the backpedalling goalkeeper who could only flail his arms at the ball as it soared over him.

Colombia will meet the Panama for a place in the final of the biennial tournament after the Central Americans overcame South Africa on penalties in a match played later on Sunday.

After controlling long stretches in the first half where they had two goals disallowed for offside, the Colombians were rewarded in the 58th minute with a Jaime Castrillon header.

A flat Mexican defence gave Jairo Patino time to float over a cross from the right to Castrillon who eluded Francisco Rodriguez to nod home from eight metres.

MEXICO EQUALISE

The four-time champions surged back and six minutes later, grabbed an equaliser as Gonzalo Pineda got a deflection off defender Jose De La Cuesta and made no mistake as he fired in low at the left post from the edge of the area.

The Colombians remained composed and continued to attack as the game remained wide-open but it was Mexico who failed to wrest control of the match and noticeably missed inspirational striker Jared Borgetti, who was suspended.

Mexico nearly found an equaliser five minutes from the end, but Omar Bravo's effort from 25 metres was well saved by Farid Mondragon who dived to his right to parry.

The game was not overly physical but referee Rodolfo Sibrian of El Salvador showed eight yellow cards, including a second to Mexico midfielder Alberto Medina who was sent off in stoppage time.

Panama advanced to Thursday's semi-final with a 5-3 shootout victory over an inexperienced South Africa after the sides had ground out a 1-1 draw in normal time and the extra 30 minutes had failed to produce a goal.

Jorge Dely Valdes put the Central Americans ahead in the 48th minute before Lungisani Ndlela equalised 20 minutes later for South Africa, who dominated the remainder of the match but were unable to add to their tally.

In the shootout, the first five men converted their spot kicks before Panama keeper Jaime Penedo dived to his right to turn away Ricardo Katza's effort.

Three penalties later, Gabriel Gomes slotted home from the spot to send Panama into the last four.

On Saturday, the United States reached the semi-finals after beating Jamaica 3-1 while Honduras knocked out Costa Rica 3-2.

The U.S. face Honduras on Thursday at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the venue for both semi-finals and the final on July 24.

2 goals in the last 5 minutes (and the second in extra time) for the US, a 2-1 victory over a pesky Honduras.

larceny.

looks like a USA v Panama final.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Brad Davis ended a long day and a long tournament, regaining the CONCACAF Gold Cup for a depleted U.S. soccer team that will limp into its next World Cup qualifier.

Santino Quaranta, Landon Donovan and Davis converted their shots and goalkeeper Kasey Keller stopped Panama's first attempt, leading the United States to a 3-1 win on penalty kicks following a bland, scoreless tie Sunday in the final of soccer's North and Central American and Caribbean championship.

"We've got to rally the troops, get the Band-Aids out and try to get 11 guys on the field to play on Aug. 17," said U.S. coach Bruce Arena, looking ahead to the World Cup qualifier against Trinidad and Tobago at East Hartford, Conn. "The travel, the heat, the field conditions, the officiating, it took a huge toll on us. We lost four players the other night to the team that got the fair play award."

Ejected from the semifinal win over Honduras on Thursday night, Arena was suspended for the final and watched from a box in the stands. The Americans, who also won this tournament in 1991 and 2002, had only 17 players available because of injuries.

Defenders Eddie Pope (sprained knee) and Steve Cherunoldo (sprained knee); midfielders Pablo Mastroeni (sprained ankle) and Steve Ralston (mild concussion); and forwards Conor Casey (torn anterior cruciate ligament) and Pat Noonan (sprained ankle) didn't dress. Pope is suspended for the Trinidad game and Arena said the others are all likely to miss the next qualifier along with forward Eddie Johnson (injured toe), who hasn't played since May.

"This has been a beating for us," Arena said. "We're lucky we didn't get some worse injuries than we got because some of the tackles were real bad. And the other night, the only red card in that game was the coach, which is remarkable."

Davis, making just his second international appearance, got the winning penalty kick by taking a stutter step and putting the ball just past the outstretched fingers of goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, who dived to his left.

"Brad has a great left peg," said Glenn Myernick, the acting U.S. coach Sunday.

The 23-year-old Davis had his penalty kick stopped against Honduras in February 2004 during the third-place game of the regional Olympic qualifying tournament. The coach that day was also Myernick.

"He came up to me and asked me if I wanted redemption and I said, without a doubt, I wanted to step up and finish it," Davis said. "I said a little prayer. I hit it in the same exact spot. I hit it with confidence. I said it was not going to happen twice."

Keller stopped the opening shot from Luis Tejada and allowed just one penalty, to Felipe Baloy. Jorge Luis Dely Valdes hit the crossbar and Alberto Blanco put the his shot over the bar. Keller dived left because Tejada went that way against South Africa in last weekend's quarterfinals.

"I don't have a phenomenal record in penalties but I have a decent record," Keller said. "I feel comfortable, especially when maybe I have a little knowledge."

Only one of the Americans failed to convert his penalty kick, with Chris Armas sending the ball right to goalkeeper Jaime Penedo. Four U.S. players were too tired after 120 minutes and asked not to be among the first five, and midfielder DaMarcus Beasley came out in the 114th minute because a hamstring hurt too much for him to shoot.

"Mooch really just asked who wanted to take them and some guys just said 'I can't,'" Donovan said of Myernick. "Santino opted to go first, which is the hardest."

The Americans, ranked sixth in the world, dominated Panama to win 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier last month at Panama City. But they struggled Sunday against the No. 83-ranked team.

"There was no pressure," Penedo said through a translator.

Luis Dely Valdes hit a post for Panama in the 75th minute and was stopped by Keller's diving save six minutes into overtime. Jimmy Conrad, Clint Dempsey and Beasley all had good chances for the Americans in the first half.

At the end, with only a few thousand fans left from the crowd of 31,018 at Giants Stadium, American players raised the trophy.

"You don't get many chances to win as professionals," Donovan said. "This could be the last time I ever win anything. I hope not, but you never know."

Game notes
Because the next FIFA Confederations Cup isn't until 2009, the 2007 Gold Cup will determine the region's representative. ... Arena hopes to have U.S. captain Claudio Reyna for the Trinidad game. ... The U.S. team is 4-3 on penalty kicks since 1990.
